'Stiff'&'Spook' by Mary Roach

Stiff

About: Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers―some willingly, some unwittingly―have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. In this fascinating account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries and tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

Spook

About: "What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's that―the million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die.

When Breath Becomes Air

'When Breath Becomes Air' by Paul Kalanithi

About: At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.

What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.

Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.

Modern Death

'Modern Death' by Haider Warraich

About: There is no more universal truth in life than death. No matter who you are, it is certain that one day you will die, but the mechanics and understanding of that experience will differ greatly in today’s modern age. Dr. Haider Warraich is a young and brilliant new voice in the conversation about death and dying started by Dr. Sherwin Nuland and Atul Gawande. Dr. Warraich takes a broader look at how we die today, from the cellular level up to the very definition of death itself.

The most basic aspects of dying―the whys, wheres, whens, and hows―are almost nothing like what they were mere decades ago. Beyond its ecology, epidemiology, and economics, the very ethos of death has changed. Modern Death, Dr. Warraich’s debut book, will explore the rituals and language of dying that have developed in the last century, and how modern technology has not only changed the hows, whens, and wheres of death, but the what of death.

Delving into the vast body of research on the evolving nature of death, Modern Death will provide readers with an enriched understanding of how death differs from the past, what our ancestors got right, and how trends and events have transformed this most final of human experiences.

Chick-Dead-Death

'The Chick and the Dead' by Carla Valentine

About: Carla Valentine works with the dead. After studying forensics, she assisted pathologists with post-mortems for years before becoming the curator of the world's most famous pathology museum. When it comes to death, she truly is an expert, and in this book she shares that expertise. Using the most common post-mortem process as the backbone of the narrative, The Chick and the Dead takes the listener through the process of an autopsy while also describing the history and changing cultures of our relationship with the dead.

The book is full of vivid insight into what happens to our bodies in the end. Each chapter considers an aspect of an autopsy alongside an aspect of Carla's own life and work and touches on some of the more controversial aspects of our feelings towards death, including the relationship between sex and death and our attitudes toward human tissue collection. Starting with the first cut, we move from external examination into the body itself, discovering more about the heart, stomach, and brain, and into dismembered and reconstructed bodies, at each stage taking a colorful detour into the question of what these things can teach us about the living.

NBC tried to stop Ronan Farrow from reporting on Harvey Weinstein

  • Despite acquiring the audio recording earlier this year of Harvey Weinstein admitting to groping Ambra Battilana Gutierrez, and having done ample research, NBC told Ronan Farrow that he did not have enough reporting to move forward with the story.

  • He had interviewed a victim, who accuses Weinstein of sexually assaulting her, on camera but she rescinded permission to use the footage after legal threats from Weinstein. He later secured an interview with another victim, but NBC told him not to use their resources.

  • NBC employees say that over many months, the network tried to slow down the story before giving him permission to take his story to The New Yorker. The president of NBC News denies this.

  • Last Saturday, Lorne Michaels said SNL didn't feature any skits about Weinstein because it was "a New York thing," and that national audiences wouldn't recognize the story.

  • Reminder: NBC also owned and sat on the audio recording of Trump saying that he could grab women "by the p---y" before it was published by the Washington Post.

ONTD ORIGINAL: A look at all the trash men in Hollywood (Part 1)

Hollywood's worst kept secret finally received the attention it deserved this week thanks to the amazing and brave women who came forward with their stories. Harvey Weinstein was properly exposed for the vile piece of shit he truly is. While Hollywood wants to act shocked, there are many more men like Weinstein in the industry whether they are producers or actors. In light of the stories and accusations, I have decided to take a look at all the men in Hollywood who have been accused of abuse or harassment.

Sean Penn

Back in the 1980's when Penn was married to Madonna, he allegedly hit her across the head with a baseball bat. While Madonna refused to press charges against her husband as he was already facing jail time for a separate assualt charge, Penn also once tried to bind her hands with an electric lamp and cord. He chased her around and bound her to a chair. Penn proceeded to rough her up and then left her to go buy some booze. He then came back and terrorized her some more. Penn promised to untie her if she performed a sexual act on him. Eventually, Madonna was able to flee and went straight to the sheriffs office. Since then, Penn has still found steady work in Hollywood. He's gone on to be nominated for several Oscars and Golden Globes. Madonna refuted the allegations in 2015 in a sworn affidavit.
Noted work since: Milk, Mystic River, I Am Sam

Johnny Depp

Last year in May, news broke that Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp. No one was really shocked by the announcement but we were sure as hell shocked about the news that followed. Heard had accused Depp of domestic abuse and provided the receipts to back up her claims. Depp had displayed abusive behavior towards Heard throughout their relationship, even breaking his hand by punching a wall after an argument between the two. A mutual friend of the couple called 911 at the request of Heard. A conversation between the couple led to Depp striking Heard with his phone. Depp pulled her hair and hit her. Depp's team was aware of his abusive behavior as shown in screenshots of a text message convo between Heard and Depp.
Noted work since: Murder on the Orient Express, Fantastic Beast Sequel, and Richard Says Goodbye

Michael Fassbender

In 2010, Leasi Andrews filed charges of domestic abuse against Fassbender. Andrews claimed that Fassbender dragged her alonside the car and threw her in a "drunken fury". Fassbender hurt her ankle and caused her to burst an ovarian cyst. Andrews dropped the charges as it was reported that she didnt want to hurt his blossoming career and she feared that he wouldnt have been able to gain entry into the US as a result of the charges. The couple were seen together after the Golden Globes as she was also seen leaving his hotel. It is not uncommon for women to go back to their abusers.
Noted work since: X-Men Films, Prometheus, 12 Years a Slave, Steve Jobs, Shame, The Snowman

Kirk Douglas

You want proof that men never seem to suffer? This fucker is 100 years old and still won't die. Dubbed a "legend" and "spartacus", Kirk is one of the last ~beloved~ stars remaining from Old Hollywood. There have been rumors for years that Kirk raped Natalie Wood (at 16), abused women, and pressured them into getting abortions. He allegedly raped the teenager during an audition. Wood's mother kept her from reporting the rape and she was also scared of the blowback she would receive of accusing the esteemed actor with rape. Wood's sister allegedly said she would out the rapist in a letter after she died.

Ryan O'Neal

Ryan O'Neal is probably one of the worst fathers ever. He allegedly gave his son cocaine at the age of 11 and also abused his children. Thats not even the worst of it. In 2014, Angelica Huston claimed in her memoir that Ryan viciously attacked and beat her in the 70's. The actress alleges that Ryan grabbed her by the hair and hit he ran the forehead with the top of his skull. She ran away to the bathroom and was followed by his brother and security. Ryan returned and began repeatedly hitting her with an open hand.

Weinstein roundup: celebs react, Donna Karen apologizes, Weinstein in rehab rumours and more

Mira Sorvino writes an op-ed about why she agreed to go on the record to The New Yorker:

It has been a real struggle to come forward with my story. I have lived in vague fear of Harvey Weinstein for over 20 years, ever since the incidents I described to Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker. At the time I don’t think I even knew that what happened — him using business-related situations to try and press himself sexually on a young woman in his employ — qualified as sexual harassment.

A source tells Us Weekly that Chapman wasn't completely blindsided by the scandal because "He's not a good person."

That was never my experience with Harvey in any way whatsoever, and I think that if people heard these stories … I do believe in humanity enough to think that this wouldn't have just continued. I never heard any stories like this — I never heard anything specific — but it's devastating to hear.

I find the behavior of Harvey Weinstein truly disgusting, both what he did and how he covered his tracks, and it makes me wonder how many others can’t come forward and tell their full story because of legal and personal intimidation. His repulsive behavior was an abuse of power. Thankfully, he’s now discovering what true power is.

The truth is, there have been rumors circulating forever, I’ve known about them. I’ve certainly been quietly protected, without really ever being told why. I certainly was never allowed near a meeting with him on my own, and anything like that. In retrospect, I understand why, even if my representatives weren’t explicitly telling me.

Perhaps this grotesque power play to ‘get some’ by this brutish thug of a man and the attempts by him, his lawyer, his board and famous friends to, once again, keep it under wraps and blame the victim will fail.

Perhaps the truth will out other sexual harassment, be it from a governor or a president or a presidential candidate or studio head or movie star or executive or anyone else complicit in this billionaire boys club bulls— that will come to an inglorious end.

  • Earlier Karen had defended Weinstein "Are we asking for it by presenting all the sensuality and all the sexuality?"

  • She issued a lengthy apology saying she had been misquoted: "I believe that sexual harassment is NOT acceptable and this is an issue that MUST be addressed once and for all regardless of the individual.

I am truly sorry to anyone that I offended and everyone that has ever been a victim."

  • There were reports yesterday that he had headed off to rehab in Europe which was untrue

  • He was spotted today in a screaming match with one of his daughter's that spilled out onto the street

  • His daughter called 911 after fearing for his safety

  • Weinstein's now rumoured to be going to rehab in Arizona

  • Over the course of her political career Clinton has recieved $26,000 in donations from Weinstein

  • She plans on giving that amount (and more) to an as yet unspecified charity or charities

  • In his "apology" statement Weinstein had said that he planned to use his money to create a $5 million scholarship to fund young women directors at USC

  • USC has rejected the offer
