YA author/scammer of the year Lani Sarem finally speaks out

$

0

- Previous post: Lani Sarem, the Handbook for Mortals author whose previous claims to fame are being related to JC from NSYNC and managing the band Blues Traveler, scammed her way to a #1 on the NYT Bestsellers list by buying thousands of her own books

- She finally gave an interview to Vulture reporter Lila Shapiro, who exposed her many lies straight to her face (I wish there were video footage of this)

- In the most recent week with reported data, Handbook for Mortals sold ten copies

- Admits that the main character was just the fantasy self-insert of her: "When I started writing, I really wanted all the things that I couldn’t have at that moment... I wanted somebody’s love story to work out. I wanted this character to have all the things I was lacking, and then live vicariously through her."

- Designed the book/film adaptation to have as many D-list celebs as possible. Partnered with Thomas Ian Nicholas from American Pie franchise, and promised a movie role to Carrot Top.

- Claims she got thousands of pre-orders at various comic cons, and bought back copies of her own book from booksellers to fulfill those orders. (Booksellers respond that not even Neil Gaiman or George R.R. Martin sell as many books at cons as Sarem claims.)

- Denies hiring the shady company ResultSource to organize the bulk buyout, until Shapiro confronts her with the ACTUAL RECEIPTS: "I told her I knew for a fact that someone working for ResultSource had placed a bulk order for copies of Handbook. I’d seen the order slip myself. Her face went pale and her eyes went wide and the silence stretched before us."

- Has no regrets - the only thing she'd do differently is to send advance copies to YA community to drum up support. Still plans on working on film adaptation/rest of series because of feminism: “If we listened to people telling us no, women would probably not even have the right to vote."

Friday night TV ratings: Inhumans bombs, MacGyver & The Exorcist hit lows

Friday night saw the premiere of critically panned Marvel's Inhumans, which unsurprisingly bombed with fractional ratings. The first part of the two-hour premiere got a 0.9 in A18-49, while the 2nd half dropped a tenth to 0.8. Once Upon A Time returns next weeks with it's rebooted season 7 with Inhumans as lead-in, Uh-oh.
CBS MacGyver reboot, which did OK enough to secure a renewal returned by tying it's previous series low of 0.8, which it hit for the season 1 finale. The venerable Blue Bloods topped the night with a 1.1 rating. Hawaii 5-0 did an OK with a 1.0.
FOX The Exorcist, which earned a surprise renewal in the summer, returned with a new series low of 0.5.

At a trip to the Weltevrede Game Lodge Wales and Ospreys hooker Scott Baldwin stuck his hand inside one of the lions' cages to pet it and was promptly bit by the animal. He had to receive stitches.

"There was an incident with a lion, but in fairness it was nothing to do with the lion," Baldwin's boss Steve Tandy said, defending the big cat. "You can't pat a lion on the head as if it's a kitten."

More a compilation of slow-panning music videos than a film proper, the sisters HAIM eschew the glitz and glamor of your usual visual album for a more intimate look inside their natural habitat. Shot on 35-mm film, the video is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson of There Will Be Blood and Boogie Nights fame.

Along with the video for their lead single, Right Now (also directed by Paul Anderson), they perform "Something To Tell You" and "Nothing's Wrong"(personal faves)

-Season 10 of RHOA is looking to be the most dramatic yet!

-Kenya/Kim HATE each other and things have gotten heated even more now that Kenya is married.

-Kim and Poorsha are rumored to be trying to prove that Kenyas marriage is a sham and majority of the cast appears to be remaining quiet instead of sticking up for Kenya.

-They are filming their last trip of the season in which both Kenya and Kim were suppose to join the ladies but word on the street is that Kenya told the producers that she refuses to film with Kim and finally forcing their hand leading them to drop Kim from the girls trip and then Kenya herself proceeded to twirl away as well before getting on the plane.

-Kenya allegedly is ready to bring a lawsuit against Kim Zolciak and perhaps certain producers of the show which of course is frowned upon. Has the Queen of RHOA finally ready to walk away from the show?

-In other RHOA news, Eva Marcille has reportedly won producers over and will be appearing as a Friend Of this season with an option for a peach for S11.

Danielle Staub is only a Friend Of this season and thus does not have a tag line. (major fail Bravo)

Stephen Colbert & Jerry Seinfeld Debate Separating Cosby's Work from His Crimes

$

The debate starts at 5:53 in the first video and ends at 2:07 in the second

* Colbert asks if Seinfeld can still watch Bill Cosby's comedy [after allegations by over 50 women that Cosby drugged and raped them], adding that he personally cannot: "I think [Cosby] saved my life, because when I was a kid, I had a tragedy in my life but for the next two years, I listened to Bill Cosby albums every night before going to bed. I would hide the speaker under my pillow so my mom wouldn’t hear that I was listening to Cosby every night, and yet I can’t listen to them now. I can’t separate it.”

* Seinfeld disagrees: "I know it's tragic, but there's a lot of tragedy in comedy." He then compares the situation to Jerry Lewis, who recently died and left his six children from his first marriage out of his will: “That upset me because I adore Jerry Lewis, but I’m not going to not watch The Bell Boy." Colbert responds: “He denied them money, but that’s not the same thing. He didn’t slip them a roofie."

* They talk about other things and then after a commercial, Seinfeld announces that he has changed his mind: "You know what I realized on the commercial?...I can't separate it either. Now that you said it, and I thought about it, it would bother me and I don't think I could...but should we separate it?" He tries to compare the situation to Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.

* Colbert says Cosby told a lot of personal stories about his life in his comedy, and Seinfeld says "Come on, it's made up, it's material." Colbert says "But part of him was the charming, fatherly figure and all of that is destroyed."

* As the audience applauds Colbert, Seinfeld says "Yeah...you're right, you're right. I'll change my mind."

ONTD Original™ - Halloween Edition: 13 Vintage YA Thrillers About Secrets, Lies & Confessions

$

Today, the ticket for young adult authors to achieve any kind of success is either to write about another dystopia, or about someone young and beautiful dying of a terminal disease. Once upon a time in the age where book stores were more plentiful, children and teen book shelves were littered with these thin novels about high school sleuths and victims dealing with murder and mayhem. It was like going to your local Blockbuster (what the hell is that?) and seeing that long aisle full of horror VHS tapes. Except these were bookshelves. R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike were probably the most popular authors of this genre in the nineties, but authors like the late Lois Duncan had been writing for the teen demo since the seventies.

These books were a treat for kids back then. You got them at school book fairs, or you could buy them through the handy ordering sheet in the back of the novels. Many of them sported eye-catching painted covers - the companies really knew how to draw buyers in. So, pick up one of these quick reads from a Goodwill or off eBay and get lost for an hour in a world here murder is committed and mysteries are solved within two hundred pages.

Below are specifically chosen books involving secrets, lies, and confessions.

I Know What You Did Last Summer
1973
Lois Duncan

One year after killing a child on the road and vowing to never tell anyone about it, four now estranged friends start to receive messages saying "I know what you did last summer."

April Fools
1990
Richie Tankersley Cusick

On their way home from an April Fools party that they weren't supposed to be at, three teenagers witness an accident with no survivors. They vow to keep the accident a secret, but now someone is playing sick pranks on them.

Fear Street: The Confession
1996
R.L. Stine

A group of friends learns that one of them killed someone, but they promise to keep the crime a secret. Can they trust that this person won't kill again, though?

Gimme a Kiss
1991
Christopher Pike

Jane's diary of secrets gets leaked to her whole school. Now, people are dying...

Silent Witness
1994
Carol Ellis

When Lucy's friend dies, his mother gives her a box of his belongings, including a videotape that contains evidence of a crime. Someone wants that tape and they will do whatever it takes to get it.

I Saw You That Night! (a.k.a. The Witness)
1994
R.L. Stine

As part of a bet, Roxie broke into someone's house. There, she witnessed something she wishes she had never seen. She tries to keep it a secret, but someone is now out to make sure she never tells anyone anything. Ever again.

Fatal Secrets
1992
Richie Tankersley Cusick

Ryan feels guilty over being unable to save her sister Marisa from an accident. Weeks after Marisa's death, one of her friends pays the family a visit. Ryan believes that this friend is harboring a dangerous secret about Marisa, though, and it is up to her to find out what it is.

Amnesia
1995
Sinclair Smith

Alicia wakes up in the hospital with amnesia. No one will tell her anything about what happened before all of this. Her own sister, Marta, is of no help either when it comes to helping Alicia remember. But what if Alicia did something terrible and that's why no why no one will tell her the truth? The dark secret Alicia fears - could it be her own?

Sweet Valley High: "R" for Revenge
1997
Francine Pascal

Jessica and Heather think they have found the perfect faculty advisor for the cheerleaders - the timid librarian, Nancy. But soon the two start to think Nancy has a dangerous, dark secret.

Fear Street: What Holly Heard
1996
R.L. Stine

Holly's craving for gossip and secrets lands her in trouble when she overhears someone planning a murder.

The Face on the Milk Carton
1990
Caroline B. Cooney

Thinking she looks like the kid on the milk carton's "missing" display, now fifteen-year old Janie starts to believe that her parents are keeping a secret about her past.

Hit and Run
1992
R.L. Stine

Four friends hit someone while practicing driving one night. They make a pact to leave the body and not report the crime. But the group becomes paranoid once the corpse disappears from the morgue, and they all start to receive ominous messages.

Camp Fear
1994
Carol Ellis

A group of summer camp counselors fear that their shared secret from seven years ago - involving a camper that never made it home - is the motive behind a vengeful killer's actions in the present day.

Gorgeous Cuban feminist Bella Thorne has taken her activism further, and recently posed nude for GQ Mexico and specifically asked for them to not retouch her to help encourage her fans to be comfortable within their own skin and not follow unrealistic beauty standards projected by the entertainment industry.

On her Instagram she said, "As a public persona you know naturally that everytime you shoot with a magazine there is always small retouching. Cuz yeah if they show my acne scars or a wrinkle in my forehead or my teeth aren't perfectly white, people will look at the photo and say no she's not perfect and usually most people don't want the public trashing and I get it, But f--k it I'm here to tell you that's right I'm not F--KING PERFECT. IM A HUMAN BEING AND IM REAL."

A Look Back at TRL from the Former VJs and Co-Creator of the Show

$
0
0
TRL is coming back on Monday with a bunch of "social media influencers" as the new faces of the show. But before then, former VJs and exec producers reminisced about personal highlights from classic TRL.

I've tried to round up what I could find from what they mentioned (or whatever Viacom hasn't taken down yet)

1. Mariah Carey Shows Up Unannounced

Bob Kusbit (co-creator/executive producer; MTV senior vp production):[Mariah Carey would show up with her own lighting crew.] One day, Mariah comes in, pushing this ice cream cart, wearing really short shorts and a skimpy top. A guy runs into the control room and says, “No wide shots!” It was her lighting director. Meanwhile, Carson is looking around the studio like, “Is this really happening?”

2. Interview with The Artist Formerly Known as Prince

Dave Holmes (VJ, 1998-2002): We were supposed to do a whole hour based around Prince. He showed up 10 minutes before the show was over, with an entourage including one huge guy who held an empty tub of like, cheeseballs, but with a sign on it that said, "Swear Jar." If you took the Lord's name in vain, you had to put coins in. Carson said to [Prince], “We were expecting you a little earlier, so there’s a lot we have to get through. We don’t have a lot of time.” And Prince said, “I don’t use time.” Carson, to his credit, said, “So what do you use?” Prince paused for a moment and then said, “Truth.”

3. Mark Wahlberg Gets Heated with Eminem

Kusbit:We had heard [Wahlberg] didn’t want to be called Marky Mark anymore. So Eminem comes in and decides to take a shot at him: “We’re all just one big, fun bunch.”

Jesse Camp (winner of the 1998 Wanna Be a VJ contest): It was like someone dropped an F-bomb on Saturday Night Live. You could tell Mark Wahlberg was using every bit of Zen that he could to not go ballistic on Eminem.

4. Diddy Runs on a Treadmill
rs_1024x759-170731123304-1024.britney-spears.cm.73117
Kusbit: Diddy’s office was across the street. We called him at a moment’s notice and said, “Hey, we want to play a game where we spin the wheel” — like Wheel of Fortune — “and it lands on your office, and we move the entire TRL audience across the street to your office.” He said, “Sold.”

Damian Fahey: Diddy was going to run the marathon, so he came to the show and ran on the treadmill for the whole hour. He didn’t stop during the commercials. But he’d randomly shout out the names of products he was endorsing while we were on-air.

5. Tom Cruise in General
105343157
Fahey: In early 2000, Tom Cruise came by, and he was really into Joss Stone. He was backstage meeting everyone, and in every room he just talks about Joss Stone. The next afternoon, this giant box full of Joss Stone CDs arrives with a note, like, “Check it out. Love, Tom Cruise.”

Anthony: Tom Cruise asked me to teach him how to dance to hip-hop on the air. I think I was smacking his butt, or he was smacking mine.

HONORABLE MENTIONS - Backstreet Boys Perform "I Want It That Way" + BSB Fan Threatens Carson

Kusbit: Six months after we launched, when the Backstreet Boys came, there were 5,000 people in Times Square. The police told us to lower our blinds because kids were backing up into traffic to try and get a view into the studio.

Riverdale Roundup: Serpents, Speculation, Sabrina, and Some Other Stuff

$

RAS posted this picture to tease the new Southside Serpents we'll meet this season. Vanessa Morgan plays Toni Topaz. Drew Ray Tanner (bottom) plays Fangs Fogarty, and Jordan Connor (seated right) plays Sweet Pea.

Fangs Fogarty is an antagonistic character from the Lil Archie line. Maybe the show will subvert his role, or maybe he'll be a straight up dick.

---

Thanks to the cast's addiction to posting IG stories on set, and crew members hashtagging stuff they do on set (particularly with #barchie ,lol), it looks like Betty and Archie get into some dirty stuff in the midseason finale

---

Episode 10 aka the start of Season 2B. The first title of this season to not be associated with a horror movie. Mind you that this is written by the pair that wrote Jughead's birthday episode. There's already early speculation that either budget cuts or Southside High burning down will force the two student populations to merge

---

Casting is underway for both Sabrina and Betty's long lost brother. So they're not showing up until the second half of the season.

In case you didn't know, Sabrina already has her own spin-off set for the 2018 tv season so they're not just casting for a recurring character but the lead of a new series. There are no rumors yet as to who's being considered or who's auditioned. Dove Cameron of the Disney Channel seems to be a popular fancast as well as Sabrina Carpenter.

Chic Cooper (or whatever his last name will end up being) will be a recurring character. It's now known in what capacity he'll show up though I won't be surprised if RAS figures out this is his chance to have an Agent Cooper on the show
