Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett details police brutality experience

Dear World,

On Saturday, August 26, 2017, I was in Las Vegas to attend the Mayweather-McGregor fight on my day off. After the fight while heading back to my hotel several hundred people heard what sounded like gun shots. Like many of the people in the area I ran away from the sound, looking for safety. Las Vegas police officers singled me out and pointed their guns at me for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A police officer ordered me to get on the ground. As I laid on the ground, complying with his commands not to move, he placed his gun near my head and warned me that if I moved he would "blow my fucking head off." Terrified and confused by what was taking place, A second Officer came over and forcefully jammed his knee into my back making it difficult for me to breathe. They then cinched the handcuffs on my wrists so tight that my fingers went numb.

The Officers' excessive use of force was unbearable. I felt helpless as I lay there on the ground handcuffed facing the real-life threat of being killed. All I could think of was 'I'm going to die for no other reason than I am black and my skin color is somehow a threat.' My life flashed before my eyes as I thought of my girls. Would I ever play with them again? Or watch them have kids? Or be able to kiss my wife again and tell her I love her?

I kept asking the Officers "What did I do?" and reminding them that I had rights they were duty bound to respect. The Officers ignored my pleas and instead told me to shut up and then took me to the back of a nearby police car where I sat for what felt like an eternity until they apparently realized I was not a thug, common criminal or ordinary black man but Michael Bennett a famous professional football player. After confirming my identity, I was ultimately released without any legitimate justification for the Officers' abusive conduct.

I have always held a strong conviction that protesting or standing up for justice is just simply, the right thing to do. This fact is unequivocally, without question why before every game, I sit during the national anthem--because equality doesn't live in this country and no matter how much money you make, what job title you have, or how much you give, when you are seen as a "Nigger," you will be treated that way.

The system failed me. I can only imagine what Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Charleeena Lyles felt.

I have retained Oakland Civil Rights Attorney John Burns to investigate and explore all my legal options including filing a civil rights lawsuit for the violation of my constitutional rights.

Sincerely,

Michael Bennett

Dylan O'Brien's serious accident helped him understand his 'American Assassin' role

$

Unrelated: Dylan meets the Mets and throws out the first pitch

About the accident he suffered on the set of 'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure':
- “I had a severe concussion and brain trauma. I basically broke this whole side of my face(the right side).”
- “I had to have facial reconstructive surgery. Got plates in there now. I thought that was just it, that my face was never gonna look the same again.”
- “I now look at the experience as having gotten away really luckily. A, just walking away from it. And B, getting this great doctor who took care of me and really fixed me up.

About how it helped him connect to Mitch Rapp (his character in 'American Assassin'):
- “This was definitely tackling it head-on. I also felt more connected to the character in a way, and more informed than I ever could have been — at the same time, I was terrified to do it.”
- “That strength comes, in a way, from having survived these traumatic incidents. Obviously, it’s not every one of those guys, but I felt really connected to that.”
- “I always wanted to try to implement these signs of pain and damage in ways like that,” he says of Rapp’s apparent detachment, “but it’s really important that Mitch accept that what happened to him is always going to be with him, and no amount of revenge will ever heal that.”

On preparing for the role:
- “I would have good days and bad days. Some days, I would show up to the gym, and my trainer would sense I was … in this place, you know? Not a good one. I would randomly have very doubtful days and panicky moments of just wanting to bow out. I had to constantly push through them. Even when I was leaving for the film.
- “I had a pretty severe panic episode an hour before my flight — to the point where I didn’t even know if they’d let me on the plane. But I always had a lot of support. ... My dad came with me on that flight. I don’t think I would have been able to do it; he actually came out with me and was my rock.”

On going back to film 'The Death Cure' after wrapping up 'American Assassin':
- “Inside, you’re wanting to run away — you don’t want to do it, you know? It ended up being one of the best experiences of my life. I’m really glad I was able to finish it. I thought I felt relief after ‘Assassin’; this was the ultimate kind of weightless. ... It had been over a year at that point since the accident, and I felt more free and like myself once I accomplished that than I had the whole year.”

poor guy. the movie still looks rly bad tho.

-Convicted felon, patronizer of the arts, and noted asshole Martin Shkreli is auctioning off his one-of-kind copy of Wu-Tang Clan's "Once Upon a Time in Shaolin"
-The album was purchased by Shkreli in auction for $2 million dollars
-The current bid sits at $200,000ish dollars
-He will donate half the sale proceeds to medical research (oh wow how generous)
-In his ebay listing, Shkreli insults Ghostface Killah who rightfully called him out on arbitrarily increasing prices on medication. Killah called the pharmabro a "fake-ass villain" and a "clown".
-"I decided to purchase this album as a gift to the Wu-Tang Clan for their tremendous musical output. Instead I received scorn from at least one of their (least-intelligent) members, and the world at large failed to see my purpose of putting a serious value behind music."
-No word if this bid is meant to raise capital for the bounty he has out on Hillary Clinton's hair

Hayley Williams wants people to relax about Hurricane Irma

Paramore is currently in Florida, leading up to some tour dates there. As some of y'all might know, there is a Cat. 5 hurricane headed Florida's way, and parts of Florida have already gone into evacuation mode. Paramore has a show in Miami on Friday and one in Orlando on Saturday, right around when the hurricane should be hitting the state. A bunch of fans have been tweeting and commenting to Hayley and the band begging them to cancel the shows, or at least give some info on refunding and rescheduling because no one wants to die just to see Paramore.

In response, Hayley posted this series of photos of her giving the middle finger with the caption, "relax". She also disabled comments on some of the photos she's posted from her vacationing at Cocoa Beach.

UPDATE: After getting a ton of shit all day, the band have finally announced that they are postponing the shows. Hayley's middle finger post remains up. I
UPDATE 2: She's now changed the caption to "when im in paradise and everything's fine"

source

Of course they aren't the only band performing in Florida this weekend or anything, but this feels like a pretty wtf response to some valid concerns regarding safety. I'm a fan of the band but this is silly.

Room by Emma Donoghue

About: To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world....

Told in the inventive, funny, and poignant voice of Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience - and a powerful story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it's where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it's not enough...not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.

And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini

About: Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations.

In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most.

Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain

About: At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie’s birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects. She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked. And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts.

Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts--from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert."

This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.

Columbine by Dave Cullen

About: "The tragedies keep coming. As we reel from the latest horror . . . " So begins a new epilogue, illustrating how Columbine became the template for nearly two decades of "spectacle murders." It is a false script, seized upon by a generation of new killers. In the wake of Newtown, Aurora, and Virginia Tech, the imperative to understand the crime that sparked this plague grows more urgent every year.

What really happened April 20, 1999? The horror left an indelible stamp on the American psyche, but most of what we "know" is wrong. It wasn't about jocks, Goths, or the Trench Coat Mafia. Dave Cullen was one of the first reporters on scene, and spent ten years on this book-widely recognized as the definitive account. With a keen investigative eye and psychological acumen, he draws on mountains of evidence, insight from the world's leading forensic psychologists, and the killers' own words and drawings-several reproduced in a new appendix. Cullen paints raw portraits of two polar opposite killers. They contrast starkly with the flashes of resilience and redemption among the survivors.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

About: Sussex, England. A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie—magical, comforting, wise beyond her years—promised to protect him, no matter what.

A groundbreaking work from a master, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out. It is a stirring, terrifying, and elegiac fable as delicate as a butterfly's wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark.

In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

About: Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
