JK Rowling's "Strike" series finally arrives on August 28th

Above is the first real look at JK Rowling's new TV series, "Strike" -- formerly Cormoran Strike, based on Rowling's series of detective novels under the pseudonym "Robert Galbraith" which include Cuckoo's Calling, The Silkworm, and that confusing third one with a lot of unnecessary casual racism and no real plot.

BFI Southbank debuted the first episode of the series a few nights back, followed by a Q&A with the cast including stars Holliday Grainger and light of my life Tom Burke.

Despite the name change (frankly Cormoran Strike was a lame title, but less likely to get missed in any media coverage than "Strike" -- particularly if any job action happens anywhere in the English-speaking world), the shaky reception to the books, and the lackluster response to casting news in general, Radio Times gives the preview a warm enough reception. That said, they do wonder whether it might get buried in the avalanche of other "moody detectives with tough pasts and attractive assistants with whom he must fight inevitable sexual tension."

To that end, RT acknowledges that Burke and Grainger's chemistry is good, making the will-they-won't-they more of a question on-screen than it was in the books, but also that Burke adds more comedy to the role than expected, and certainly more than we've seen from a lot of British moody detectives in any number of shows in the last few years.

This quote sums things up rather nicely:

Overall the episode is a thoroughly enjoyable watch. Not breathtaking TV, not particularly original, but a solid, entertaining mystery for a Sunday evening as the nights get colder and autumn approaches.

Not sure about the rest of you, but that's about what I was hoping from the show anyway, as it was what I got out of the books.

James Cromwell talks about his activism

Actor James Cromwell served a brief prison sentence for refusing to pay a fine after a protest (ONTD post) and the Huffington Post caught up with him after.

  • served three days. The guards asked him if he was anxious about being raped, and if he was anxious to rape someone (WTF??)

  • became a civil rights activist after touring with the Free Southern Theatre group and its director John O'Neal in the sixties

  • became disconnected from activism in his mid-thirties

  • re-connected with it after filming Babe. He re-committed to vegetarianism and began protesting for animal rights. Was arrested at a Wendy's (for "trespassing") during a demonstration in 2001

  • Has since protested the Iraq war, broke into a University of Wisconsin board meeting to protest their animal experiments, has been booted out of fundraisers attended by gov. Cuomo and Nancy Pelosi, was arrested again protesting a facility which would store toxic materials near a drinking water source, etc

  • Went to jail rather than pay the fine to bring national attention to the cause through his celebrity, pimps the Protect Orange County website

  • Quote: "In the civil rights movement, in the anti-Vietnam [movement], in the black liberation movement, everyone knew there [were] consequences. As long as people understand that and say, ‘Yes, but what is the alternative?’ there will be no revolution."

Reese Witherspoon Discusses Possibility of Big Little Lies Season 2

- Reese says that she's "optimistic" about another season, but it depends on the book's author Liane Moriarty, and if she has further storylines to tell with these characters. She says that they would be happy to leave it where it is, but they hope there will be more. They will not create another season "out of thin air"
- Says that the success of the show and the positive reaction of the audience has made them think a second season would be an option.
- On the appeal of the show: "I think this is one of those shows that is unique in that it was very entertaining, but it was also really moving and talking about issues that are very on the forefront of everyone’s mind. So, it’s really demand from the audience that would create a second season."
- They got one negative review that called it "basically a soap opera for rich ladies": "I felt like this person didn’t really watch all seven episodes of the show. We found out that they only watched three and the publication pulled his review and re-reviewed it. But that shocked me. I thought it was so dismissive and it was, you know, some crusty old white dude who doesn’t understand that women are complex and interesting and interested."

Celebs react to terrorist attack at Neo Nazi rally in Virginia + Trump tweets

THIS IS A CONTINUATION POST

+ Neo Nazi's in Charlottesville continued their tiki torch fuckery from last night into today morning and afternoon. Neo Nazi's want to take back this country and were protesting in the name of the president. While everyone reacted to this with horror, the Urinator-In-Chief took a long time to tweet out 140 characters. The president called it "sad!" (literally) and blamed violence from many sides.

+ A car plowed into counter protestors and over 10 are injured. One victim of the crash passed away some time after. The driver reversed away from the scene of the crime but they eventually caught him. The driver did not shout "allahu akbhar" so we have no way of knowing intent.

Marc Jacobs on Hip Hop and Charges of Cultural Appropriation: “Maybe I’ve Been Insensitive”

$

In an interview with InStyle magazine about his hip hop-inspired fall collection, and touched on criticism stemming from last year's show in which he was criticized for cultural appropriation after sending mostly white models down the runway with multi-colored dreadlocks (inspired by Lana Wachowski). Here are some choice quotes:
“It’s a very weird time,” Jacobs says. “I feel disconnected, like I don’t see anything in this day other than the Internet as being a thing. I feel out of touch with what today really looks like. But that’s the thing. You walk in here and see Hype and all this, and how happy people are, and it’s worth it.”
...
“What I learned from that whole thing, what caused me to pause after it died down a little bit, was that maybe I just don’t have the language for this, or maybe I’ve been insensitive because I operate so inside my little bubble of fashion,” Jacobs says.

“We’re always working toward something, but we don’t really know what that is,” Jacobs says. “It takes shape based on all of the things that are of interest, that feel good, sound good, look good. It’s just through the process that everything becomes distilled into what seems to be a story.”

“There seems to be this strange feeling that you can be whoever you want as long as it’s ‘yours,’ which seems very counter to the idea of cross-pollination, acceptance, and equality,” he says. “Now you can’t go to a music festival with feathers in your hair because it’s cultural appropriation.”

Tom Welling Opens Up About the Superman Suit on #Smallville After 15+ Years

$

It's been almost 16 years since Smallville premiered on the WB. While the CW has tried (and failed) to rekindle some of the television magic of the first four seasons, Tom Welling's portrayal of a young Clark Kent still resonates with fans and casual viewers.

While promoting his new Fox series Lucifer, Welling finally addressed the Smallville series finale in which Clark ripped open his button-down shirt for the only time.

"It was something that we discussed before we ever shot the pilot with [creators] Al Gough and Miles Millar," Tommy spilled to @EW. " I asked about the suit and the tights and the flying, and they said, ‘No, absolutely not,’ part of the reason being is that show is about a teenager trying to figure out who he is. They felt that once Clark put on the cape and the suit, life became too easy, in a sense."

"We jumped onto this idea that at the end of the show," he continues, "the idea is that Clark becomes Superman and he’s out there, and we know he’s out there, but we can’t go with him, but that we know and we feel good that he’s out there doing good,” Tom said. “That was what we strove for, and I think we hit it. I liked the ending of the series, because it’s like, ‘Yes, he did it!’ I hope the audience didn’t feel like we didn’t show them something that they needed to see. I felt like we gave them the jumping off point for their imagination as to what could happen."

Upon extensive search of the same landfill, Rogers' decomposing body was also found in a suitcase.

Season 6, Episode 18 — "Bad Blood"

About: In 1992, in a rural Canadian community, Dr. John Schneeberger is accused of sedating and sexually assaulting one of his female patients and his step daughter. DNA tests demonstrate that the doctor is innocent, but the female patient still insists that he sedated and raped her. On three occasions, blood was taken from the doctor's arm for DNA testing, and each time, the results exonerated Schneeberger. Seven years later, a private investigator takes lip balm from Schneeberger's car, has it DNA-tested and the results were a match to the perpetrator. So, how did Dr. Schneeberger trick earlier investigators?

4. Season 7, Episode 10 — "Without a Prayer"

By doing this, they received a call from a woman, for whom Oba Chandler had done work, and they positively identified his handwriting, as well as a palm print left on the note.

Celebs react to Trump's piss poor reaction regarding terrorist attack at Neo Nazi rally

$

+ Many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have condemned this terrorist attack from Orrin Hatch to Marco "twitter fingers" Rubio. They've mostly all called this a domestic terror attack because, yes, white people can do such things as well. While Urinator-in-Chief has spoken about the attack, he has yet to condemn the actual groups (his voter base) for the violence and blamed the "many sides". Trump has been dragged by nearly everyone for his lukewarm response. His responses afterwards have also been awful. The driver of the car has been identified by law enforcement and some of the names of the Neo-Nazi protestors from Friday are trickling out. It's a shame his pastor and family didn't report him after he was radicalized. The FBI and DOJ are also launching an investigation re: saturday's protest and terrorist attack.
