*Michelle Carter will spend 15 months in prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for repeatedly encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.

She was sentenced to 2 1/2 years, with 15 months suspended. The judge also granted her a stay of incarceration, meaning she will not have to go to prison until she has exhausted her appeals in state court.

*Netflix is creating a parody true crime TV series called American Vandal. It's a mystery about who is spray-painting dicks onto cars. The spoof is unexpected coming from Netflix, since it helped spur the true crime craze with its documentaries Making a Murderer and The Keepers.

*Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders is coming to NBC on September 26th. It looks... fine? It's an eight-episode series that is apparently trying to emulate American Crime Story.

*Discovery is also doing an eight-part scripted series on Ted Kaczynski called Manhunt: UNABOMBER. It will focus on the FBI agent who used brilliant linguistic techniques to help identify and capture Kaczynski. The series stars Paul Bettany, Chris Noth, Jane Lynch, and Keisha Castle Hughes. The Unabomber was active for nearly 20 years, killing 3 people with his homemade bombs.

*Hulu is developing a true crime anthology series called The Act that will focus on the people at the center of crimes."In The Act we’re going to show you the human story behind bizarre crimes.” It sounds similar to other anthologies like American Justice,FBI Files, Forensic Files, Disappeared, Snapped, etc. The first episode will focus on Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

*Thirteen murder and true-crime podcasts to check out.

*A man killed his wife on an Alaskan cruise ship because she wouldn't stop laughing at him.

Natalie Portman's new film Annihilation gets a release date

$

The film is written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) and stars Natalie Portman along with Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Oscar Isaac. There was speculation this could be an awards contender, especially after Portman dropped out of the Ruth Bader Ginsberg film she had been attached to for a long time that was supposed to film in September. Was it so she could campaign?

It was not!

The release date is February 23, 2018 which puts it firmly out of Oscar consideration.

The film is about an all female team of scientists who go into a mysterious zone to investigate mysterious happenings in the area.

Uber Partners with McDonalds while Lyft Partners with Taco Bell

• McDonalds announced delivery to those too lazy to get up and go eat at a location. It's available to more than 7,800 restaurants in 47 countries with that service expanding to about 25% of the current US locations with UberEats (a partnership that started earlier this January). "People are so used to living their lives with one click of a button," said McDonalds CEO Steve Easterbrook.

• Taco Bell's service differs in that it is testing a new option in the app called "Taco Mode" — a feature that allows Lyft passengers to push a button to have their driver take them to a Taco Bell drive-thru between 9pm and 2am.

• Taco Bell will test "Taco Mode" in Orange County, California, from July 27th to 29th and August 3 to 5, with plans to expand the service across the United States in 2018.

Stephen Colbert's InStyle September 2017 Manspread

$

Stephen Colbert is the InStyle cover boy for one of 5 subscriber-only special editions, for the September 2017 issue.

  • On his show: “Today you’ll feel better, but these shows are cotton candy dropping in water, and I don’t pretend otherwise. I used to joke to Jon [Stewart] that we are shouting jokes into an Altoids can and throwing them off an overpass. Nobody remembers. [...] “There’s a perception of journalists or the audience of getting something from us beyond the joke. But... we’re just making jokes about people’s daily experiences. My show will have no effect on the world.”

  • Colbert arrived to this photoshoot with his very own cut-off suit and white T-shirt and the sexiest possible dad jeans. As he grabbed a printout of abdominal muscles and tucked it into his pants, he hooted, “This is so dumb!”

  • A Katz Media Group study found that Colbert’s ratings went up in 18 of the 23 Nielsen-metered markets where Trump won a majority

  • On his Russia trip: “I didn’t take anything out of the United States. I left my phone, my Apple watch, my iPad, and my laptop because you have to assume that the FSB [Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation] has complete control over your devices from the moment you get there.”

  • On his Emmy-nominated live election night special: “I just drank. I drank a lot of bourbon onscreen. We didn't know what to do.” They lurched through the show, and then Colbert went home to New Jersey. He normally stays in the city when he is shooting, but“my wife was like, ‘I would prefer that you come home, please. I don’t want to sleep by myself tonight, you know?’"

  • Colbert could be the first Emmy emcee in TV history to take home several awards while hosting

  • About being uncomfortable: "I don’t know what it is about my past: I either want to have an immediate, intimate affection with you or I don’t want to talk to you at all. And it’s my fault if [the affection] doesn’t happen. So that’s my hesitancy, or that’s my discomfort with people."

Marvel's Inhumans gets scathing first reviews

$

After seeing the first episode of Marvel's Inhumans, snap judgements of the episode was posted on banned source, which were not very flattering.

Simply awful. I'm so disappointed since I generally love everything Marvel does. But this is absolutely terrible. The dialogue is atrocious. The fight sequences are shockingly choreographed. The sets (or more-so the obvious green-screen) aren't that crash hot either. It's only saving grace is Lockjaw who is adorable. As one of the few people that actually liked Iron Fist, I can easily say that this is Scott Buck's worst work yet. 3/10

There was a lot of hope for this pilot and it did not live up to expectations. Not even a strong cast could breath life into the cringe worthy script they were given. There are some decent moments, but they are few and far between. For the most part this is a big miss for Marvel. There is still hope subsequent episodes can save the series, but the pilot is massively disappointing. 3/10
