The Mindy Project: Ranking Mindy's Love Interests

$
0
0

"People seem to be having these awesome sex lives and I'm just trying to find a life partner to go apple picking with."

Aren't we all, Mindy Kaling, aren't we all. Kaling's Fox sitcom The Mindy Project follows Dr. Mindy Lahiri, an ob-gyn, as she looks (and looks) for "the one" while in New York City. Rom-com clichés are mocked, but never cruelly, as Mindy hilariously and sometimes heartbreakingly navigates her love life.

To celebrate tonight's season one finale (the series was renewed for a second season), we ranked all of Mindy's love interests. From the cool Game of Thrones-loving pastor to the hooker with a dream, the gang's all here!

Occupation: Fellow gynecologist in Mindy's office
Length of Courtship: N/A
Best Moment: Oh, where to begin? Maybe when Danny grabbed Mindy's hand when their flight hit turbulence. Or their banter-filled exchange in his shower (fully clothed, obviously). And we can't forget about Danny coming over to help Mindy build a bunk bed. Their hilarious question and answer conversation when Danny became Mindy's gyno was made of awesome as well. But then they also ended up at a crappy pizzeria on Valentine's day night together. We can't decide, we give up.
Rating: N/A...yet.
..

Occupation:
Pastor
Length of Courtship: Episode 19-current
Best Moment: His amazing sermon, which was DJ-ed by Moby, where he proclaims he hates God because his DVR didn't record Game of Thrones (to make a point, people!). Runner-up: Using the stripper pole to kick Tom at a college frat party.
Rating: 9/10-Good date banter, inspires Mindy to be a better person, handles her quirks well, uses angel emojis and is the coolest pastor to ever pastor. We totally want to get with Pastor Casey
...

Occupation: Prostitute/aspiring 9/11 songwriter
Courtship: Episode 20
Best Moment: Attempting to play his song about 9/11 at Danny's cocktail party.
Rating: 1/10-Come on, he's a prostitute.
...

Occupation: Soldier
Courtship: First kiss as Jewish summer camp and Episode 16
Best Moment: Sam stops getting his "ARMY" tattoo when Mindy shows up, leading to the hilarious yet on-the-nose "ARM" body ink. On his arm.
Rating: 8/10-Probably because you always want what you can't have, but there is a chance for Sam and Mindy to give their relationship an honest chance when he returns from Afghanistan in 18 months.
..

Occupation: Latin teacher
Length of Courtship: Episodes 13 and 14, which was Valentine's Day; he dumped her when he realized he was in love with his best friend Lucy.
Best Moment: At a double date with Lucy and Danny, Jamie attempts to give himself the Heimlich on a parking meter.
Rating: 5/10-While Jamie and Mindy gave (really) good date banter, it was obvious from the start that he was in love with his Sally. The Office's Ryan and Kelly they were not!

The series follows their rise from the humble dirt soccer fields of their childhood, to the grandeur of international stardom and national pride – all set against the turbulent backdrop of Colombia’s civil and drug wars of the time. Born an illegitimate child in a bordello in Colombia, she grew up on the backstreets and learned how to use her charms and wits to start a life of crime that eventually took her to Miami. There she became the undisputed queen of the illegal drug trade with Colombia. Married four times, she killed each of her unfortunate husbands, thus earning the name “The Black Widow.” “La

(Primetime – El Mall)

“Cloroformo”– This is a gritty, no-holds-barred story of five boxers who train at a gym in Mexico City, their manager, and a promoter who has seen the former glory of the sport deteriorate to its present, unseemly state. It’s a place that serves as a focal point to look into each of their lives, dreams, fears, victories, and defeats, both in and out of the ring. It’s an unvarnished look into their passionate, addictive world in which there’s much more at stake than just winning a fight. A place where social standing is irrelevant and, at the end of the day, every punch hurts everyone just the same. Starring Osvaldo Benevides, Tenoch Huerta, Gustavo Sánchez Parra, Alex Perea and Zuria Vega, “Cloroformo” also features special guest appearances by Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Julio César Chávez. (Primetime – Televisa)

“Diablo Guardián” (Guardian Devil)– This is a story of innocence lost, dangerous addictions and dreams that become nightmares. The series features a 15-year-old girl, who is always at odds with her parents and wants no part of their plans for her in Mexico. She steals more than $100,000 and crosses the Mexican border into the U.S. She settles in New York City to fulfill her dream of living ‘the good life’ in the Big Apple. But money has a way of running out and she finds out the hard way that survival for a young, unskilled, immigrant girl comes at a price. “Diablo Guardián” is based on the best-selling novel and adapted by Gustavo Bolivar, writer of “El Capo” and “Sin Senos No Hay Paraiso.” (Primetime – RTI)

“Los Héroes del Norte 3” (Heroes of the North 3)– This comedic adventure returns narrating the fun of five characters who meet under the worst of circumstances and form a band in their search for stardom within the world of norteño music. Despite adversity Zacarías, interpreted by renowned Mexican actor Miguel Rodarte, and his pals El Faquir, Don Apolinar, El Botarga and El Menonita, find the key to success within the challenging world of grupero Mexican regional music, showing their fans, and the world, that even the most common of men can become heroes. Beyonce H&M bikini advert is censored by New Yorkers

The so-called “bulge” of the Lower East Side still remains a religious Jewish stronghold despite the rampant change on all fronts. As such, one reader points out that there’s currently a modesty war brewing over at Grand and Columbia Streets. One that sorta mirrors what sometimes transpires on the other side of the river in Brooklyn.

Here at the M14A bus stop, an H&M ad featuring a bikini-clad Beyonce gets censored with some sort of cover, then categorically removed. We are told this is happening daily. From the mailbag:

There is a billboard of Beyonce at the bus stop at grand and Columbia. – one of the H and M one of her in a bikini. Every day someone tapes a cover over it, now it is opaque sheeting and every day people rip it down. You can see what is left of yesterday as the white covering at the bottom of the ad. We suspect the same modesty war that exists in Williamsburg but it is daily now.

Her ads are also being vandalized in Amsterdam,
Citizens of Amsterdam North aren't a fan of Beyoncé's H&M campaign and molested some posters around the city district with graffiti and wrote 'NEE TEGEN BLOOT (SAY NO TO NAKED)''

James Franco lights up the summer's funniest movie, This is the End. See the photos and read the highlights from his GQ cover story.

"My public persona is something that is only partially constructed by me, so if people want to mock that, it's fine. I mock it."

"Your Highness? That movie sucks. You can't get around that."

"As far as why Pineapple Express 2 has not been made for real, I don't know what the holdup is. I would do it, Danny [McBride] would do it, Seth [Rogen] would do it. I think Seth and Evan [Goldberg] just need a fire lit under their asses."

"Like all comedies, even bad ones, [This is the End] gets at important issues if you want to examine it."

"When I first read the script [for This Is The End], the James Franco character was—I guess the only way to describe it is he was a lot douchier than the version that we came up with. I was the materialistic guy. They were really playing up the Gucci-modeling aspect of my life."

Kind Campaign is an internationally recognized movement, documentary and
school program based upon the powerful belief in KINDness that brings awareness
and healing to the negative and lasting affects of girl-against-girl
"crime."

Kind Campaign is an official 501 (c)(3). In February 2009, while attending
Pepperdine University, the founders, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson joined
forces. Having both been affected by female bullying throughout their youth,
they decided to create change by giving females a platform to speak out about
this universal experience.

Immediately upon graduating with degrees in Film and Television Production,
Lauren & Molly drove across the country for two months to shoot their
documentary and began to implement their assembly program into schools across
the nation. Their documentary, Finding Kind, was released in theaters in New
York and Los Angeles, was accepted and awarded in over 20 film festivals, and
has screened in thousands of schools across America and Canada. They have
personally spoken in over 450 schools across North America and have completed
four international anti-bullying school tours, reaching hundreds of thousands of
students with their documentary, assembly program and Kind Club curriculum.

We are excited to continue our work of the last four years by creating the KiND
KiT. Set to release in Fall 2013, the KiND KiT is an anti-bullying curriculum,
which will include the Finding Kind documentary, an assembly DVD, Kind Campaign
materials, and the Kind Club Curriculum. The KiND KiT will allow a vast number
of schools and communities to host their own Kind Campaign assemblies and
screenings.

It is our hope that by continuing to expand and develop our in-school programs,
we will educate girls about ways to create healthy female friendships and to use
the kindness within their own hearts to change the world.

Forget Pilates -- Anette Olsson does Tabata exercises

$

The usual method among celebs who've given birth to get back into shape ASAP is Pilates and yoga, with who knows how much coke and Adderall on the side. But ex-Nightwish singer Anette Olsson (she has dropped the "Olzon" stage name after leaving the band) is doing something much tougher: Tabata exercises.

Tabata method was developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata in 1996 for the Japanese speedskating Olympic team. After a lot of trial and error (those poor skaters), he perfected the right blend of bursts of high-intensity workout and time to rest: 20 seconds of ultra-intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated continuously for 4 minutes for a total of 8 cycles. If it doesn't kill you, it'll make you stronger because it's a seriously demanding HIIT method of exercise but it gets results.

As for her results, this is a 40-year-old woman who just had a baby 2 months ago. Judge for yourself.

There are plenty of Tabata apps for iOS and Android to help your workout. Has anyone on ONTD tried it? I did once. Just once.

Source: Her blog, wikipedia, my own writing.
Sorry for the posting screwup, mods. Also, no exercise/workout tags?

Melissa Joan Hart's Kickstarter Campaign Canceled After Project Falls Extremely Short Of Goal

$

It was a sad day for '90s teen-sitcom star Melissa Joan Hart, whose Kickstarter campaign for the movie "Darci's Walk of Shame" was canceled Monday.

Hart's crowdfunding effort hoped to raise $2 million for the project, but after about a month it had collected only $51,605 from a measly 315 supporters. The synopsis for "Darci" describes it as the story of what happens after "an impulsive act has Darci face enormous hurdles to get back to her sister’s wedding and avoid her family witness her first walk of shame."

Hart must have known the project was a bit of a gamble, as her personal message to donors asked them "to do what Hollywood won't, and that is to take a chance on me as the lead of a romantic comedy film." The actress called the movie a "leap of faith" and promised it would remain similar to the same comedy she's served up in "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,""Clarissa Explains It All," the 1999 rom-com "Drive Me Crazy" and her current ABC Family series "Melissa & Joey," which will return for a third season May 29.

The goal of the campaign, Hart said, was to help her land her first leading role since "Drive Me Crazy."

The actress congratulated "Veronica Mars" on its Kickstarter success, which seems to have catapulted the attention given to celebrity-driven crowdfunding initiatives. In addition to Hart, Zach Braff recently launched a successful Kickstarter effort to fund his "Garden State" follow-up "Wish I Was Here" -- an endeavor that has sparked much contention regarding whether an A-list celebrity should take to crowdfunding in order to support Hollywood projects.

Celebrities Who've Admitted To Having Plastic Surgery

$
0
0
Celebrities are forever changing their look. But when it comes to going under the knife, many play coy and keep us guessing whether they've actually had work done.

But some stars are up-front about having had plastic surgery. Amanda Bynes, for example, openly discussed her nose job on Twitter just last week.

Amanda Bynes

In May, Bynes took to Twitter to reveal: "Intouch used a photo from years ago on their cover and I hate it! The reason I've asked all magazines and blogs to stop using old photos of me is I don't look like that anymore! I had a nose job to remove skin that was like a webbing in between my eyes. I wasn't going to tell anyone, but I look so much prettier in my new photos that I don't want old photos used anymore! I'm so sick of magazines and blogs using old photos! When will they stop? I will never look like that again! Having surgery was the most amazing thing for my confidence!"

Ashlee Simpson

When rumors circulated that Simpson had rhinoplasty in 2006, her initial response was "Everybody's already saying it, so I just don't talk about it." Her dad then acknowledged the surgery, telling Fox News, "Girls have their own ideas. Anyway, there was a real problem with her breathing and that was cured." Ashlee later confirmed it to Us Weekly, telling the magazine, “I was never really unhappy with how I looked, (and) I don’t think I am more beautiful than I was (before). I just see the same old goofy girl I see every day.”

Dianna Agron

In 2011, the "Glee" star told David Letterman that she'd had her nose done, after breaking it twice. Of the second fracture, she explained, "I couldn't get it fixed because we were in the middle of doing this concert tour and we were filming. We had a day off and I met up with some of my friends and we were dancing. And again, there was another collision of sorts -- I must be turning too quickly, people don't see me coming or something -- but it's fixed now!"

Ashley Tisdale

The "High School Musical" star opened up about her nose job to People in 2008, and the inevitable tabloid criticism that followed, telling the magazine that "people were saying I was 'unveiling my look,' but I was still recovering! That's not what I look like right now." She added, "I think I still look like me."

Jamie Lee Curtis

“I’ve had a little plastic surgery. I’ve had a little lipo. I’ve had a little Botox. And you know what? None of it works. None of it,” Curtis revealed to More magazine in 2002. "Ten years ago, before anybody did that, I had fat taken from underneath my eyes because I was on a movie and I was puffy. And I remember the cameraman saying, ‘I can’t shoot her now.’ I remember being mortified. And yet, you know what? Nobody tells you if you take fat from your body in one place, it comes back in another place," she added.

Hayden Panettiere Sleeping On Friends’ Futon

$

0

Actress Hayden Panettiere has spent the past month sleeping on a futon in the attic of her friends’ house in Tennessee because she was unsure if her TV show “Nashville” would be renewed for a second season.

The “Heroes” star relocated to the southern state last year to film the drama series, in which she portrays a villainous country singer, and she rented a condominium in the same building as Grammy winner Taylor Swift.

However, she decided not to renew her lease to the apartment when it expired earlier this year. Instead she moved in with pals, as she had no idea if she would still have a job by the end of spring.

Luckily, bosses at ABC, the network behind “Nashville,” chose to renew the show on Friday, giving Panettiere the OK to start house-hunting again.

And it seems this time it could be for good – the actress insists she would still like to set down roots in the country music mecca regardless of her series’ future.

She tells New York Magazine, “Even if the show didn’t go on, I would always want to have some sort of a base here.”

Something to tell us? Hayden Panettiere shows off stunning diamond 'engagement' ring on her finger

Ever since Hayden Panettiere got back together with her boxer boyfriend Wladaimire Kiltschko there have been reports the two were planning to wed. Now the pint sized star has fuelled the engagement rumours by wearing a stunning diamond ring at the ABC Upfronts in New York on Tuesday. The sparkling ring featured three rows of platinum set diamonds and was certainly on show as the 23-year-old posed on the red carpet for her show Nashville.

While not on her left hand where engagement rings are traditionally worn, the expensive ring cannot be dismissed as just another accessory. This is because her on and off again partner is from the Ukraine and it is custom in most Orthodox Christian Eastern European countries to wear the engagement and wedding rings on a woman's right hand.

The pair rekindled their love in January after Hayden split with boyfriend of a year and a half former New York Jets star Scotty McKnight. The 23-year-old Nashville actress and her 37-year-old athlete beau started dating in 2009 but split in 2011. In a statement obtained by German magazine Bunte, Wladimire said they called time on their 18-month romance because it was difficult coping with having a long-distance relationship.

The star made sure to snuggle up to her very tall boyfriend throughout the evening. She later wrapped her arms around her Nashville co-star Sam Palladio as they represented their hit drama show. The pair had a lot to celebrate, besides Hayden's possible engagement ABC also announced that it had renewed the country music series.

Game Of Thrones Star Alfie Allen Talks To The Big T

THE question of whether the sex and violence shown on ‘Game of Thrones’ are gratuitous has been raised since the start of the awarding-winning show, but according to one of its stars, all the bloodshed and nudity serve the purpose of making the story more real.

Sporting new platinum coloured locks (which he dyed for an upcoming film), British actor Alfie Allen sat down with the Caribbean press during a recent HBO Latin America press junket in Miami to discuss the third and current season of the hit fantasy show.

The 26-year-old Allen plays Theon Greyjoy, the heir of Lord Balon Greyjoy who has been held as a hostage of House Stark since his boyhood after his father’s uprising against King Robert Baratheon failed.

Theon grew up as one of the Stark siblings, but that did not stop him from betraying them when he saw an opportunity to impress his father by capturing House Stark’s seat, Winterfell.

At the end of season two, Theon had failed in his bid to hold Winterfell and was captured by enraged Northmen who mistakenly believed that he had murdered two of the Stark boys.

Now, season three finds Theon at the mercy of Ramsay Snow, who is seemingly torturing him for his crimes.

Throughout the seasons, on his path to self-realisation, Theon has often found himself in sex related and torture scenarios, but Allen said he feels these scenes always serve the plot and he has no problem filming them.

“I feel fine being part of it, I don’t feel wrong about that. If it’s gratuitously done, it’s wrong, but I think in (Game of Thrones) it’s very real. (Sex and violence) happen in real life, so why not, why can’t we show that on screen?

“I think it’s needed. I don’t think it’s just there for the audience to see (naked skin),” he said.

As for the violence specifically, Allen said people have an age-old fascination with seeing bloodshed and fight scenes, and that no one is really above finding a particular skilled sword move “cool”.

But while filming especially gruesome torture scenes for the show’s third season doesn’t bother him, Allen admits that he does find it challenging.

“The first torture scene was tough, trying to reach that level of emotion, because I didn’t have any real life experiences to draw on. I have definitely been mentally tortured by a few women, but not physically,” he joked.

Another challenging scene to film was the aborted violent rape of his character in episode three of the new season.

“It was tough and not really something to be laughed at; it’s pretty horrible,” he said.

However, Allen recalled that the Game of Thrones’ crew decided to lighten the mood with a visual joke.

“I remember we had the storyboard (for that scene), and in the storyboard they made me look happy about (the near rape experience).”

While he has done full frontal nudity for show before, the British actor chose a stand-in for the cheek-bearing scene in this episode and said he hopes the viewers appreciated his choice of derriere.

But aside from the failed rape, filming sex scenes are pretty easy and always enjoyable, Allen said.

“With those sort of scenes you just have to get on with it and enjoy it as well. Once you’re nervous, the other person is going to become (nervous) and it won’t ring true.”

Wanting to look his best for the nude scenes and also to give a good representation of a hardened warrior, Allen said he hit the gym and lost weight.

To achieve his desired physique, the actor said he changed his diet completely, but in a “common sense” way by cutting out sugary drinks, reducing his intake of carbohydrates and drinking lots of water.

“When I’m doing those nude scenes and sex scenes, it’s going to be up there for eternity, those things, so you want to make sure you’re in the best shape you can be, because people are going to be rewatching it over and over again...hopefully,” he said.

In addition to withstanding long and grisly torture sessions this season, Allen’s character is also on a journey of finding himself and achieving redemption.

“Theon’s biggest challenge is realising he has nothing to prove to anyone, that he just needs to get on with his life and be Theon, and not be a Greyjoy and not be a Stark, but just be his own person,” Allen said.

“And he kinda does that in episode four (of season three); he’s on the path to realising it and gets severely punished for it.”

Allen describes Theon as a lonely character, someone who is often surrounded by other people, yet still feels very much alone. And it is this loneliness that the actor said is sometimes challenging to portray.

“That was hard; it can be demoralising at times...(portraying) that lonely state of mind the whole time,” he said.

With more screen time in seasons two and three and a presence in key, game-changing scenes, the character of Theon has captured the fans’ attention.

“One of the things I love about the character is he’s real, he’s not a hero, he’s a real person. He makes mistakes and he’s a bit of a boy really. And you’re going to see him grow into a man, hopefully, in a really f* up way,” Allen said.

The British actor said he feels viewers relate to Theon because he’s someone who displays very human flaws.

“Everyone wants to relate to the hero and be a hero, but when it comes down to it, we’re not all perfect human beings, are we?”

And while his character has increasingly become the topic of heated discussions between fans, and the show itself has grown to dominate the pop culture landscape, Allen said there’s really no pressure for him.

“It’s cool, but I don’t really feel the pressure. I don’t trawl the Internet or do stuff like that. I’m not on Facebook and I’m not on Twitter, so I don’t really see those sides of things – not because of Game of Thrones, I just don’t like Facebook or Twitter. I think Facebook is on the decline right now. I think a lot of people are getting bored with it. A lot of young children are not joining up, I think it was just sort of a fad...and I was the first one to get off it,” he said jokingly.

But while he may not get the full Internet experience when it comes to fandom, Allen said he loves the fact that the show has become so huge and continues to attract more viewers.

“It doesn’t really add pressure for me. I love that, love performing. I love theatre, I love performing in front of big audiences, I buzz off that. That more and more people love (Game of Thrones), I just think it’s great,” he said.

Wade Robson: I'm Ready to TALK About MJ Sex Abuse Allegations

Wade Robson is breaking his silence on the Michael Jackson sex abuse allegations ... and it sounds like he's about to drop a bombshell.

Robson surfaced at JFK this morning -- unsuccessfully trying to stay low-key in a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses.

But when the paps recognized Robson, they immediately blasted the guy with questions about his accusation -- that MJ molested him when he was a kid.

TMZ broke the story ... Robson claims MJ was a monster who sexually abused him for years ... but he didn't take action sooner because he repressed the memories. The MJ estate says Robson's allegations are completely bogus.

Robson says he'll open up about the situation tomorrow.

Stay tuned ...

Wade Robson: I Don't Need MJ Estate to Prove Molestation in Court

Wade Robson WILL have his day in court in his attempt to prove he was molested by Michael Jackson ... even if he's shut down by the Michael Jackson Estate.

TMZ has learned ... Robson has filed a civil lawsuit in L.A. County Superior Court ... and it has nothing to do with his creditor's claim against the Estate. We broke the story ... Robson belatedly filed his creditor's claim, alleging MJ molested him between the ages of 7 and 14.

Robson may get shut down by the probate judge because he waited too long to file his claim. But the civil lawsuit we found will NOT go away that easily.

The allegations in the civil lawsuit are sealed, but TMZ has obtained the face page of the complaint, which shows Robson is suing DOE 1, an individual, DOE 2, a California corporation, and DOE 3, a California corporation. As for who these anonymous DOES are ... TMZ has done some digging, and it's clear. Robson is targeting MJJ Productions -- Michael's record label (owned by Sony) which hired Wade when he was 11 -- and MJJ Ventures ... which produced Michael's music videos.

The two corporations may have been involved in bringing Wade to the U.S. from his home in Australia, and it's clear Wade will argue they had some responsibility for protecting him -- kind of like the relationship between priests who molest and the Catholic Church.

As for the individual DOES (Wade names 50 DOES) ... it's very clear from our research that Robson is targeting the two executors of the MJ Estate -- John Branca and John McClain.

Short story -- even if Wade loses in probate court, he can probably have his day in civil court and put Michael Jackson and allegations of molestation before a jury.

'Grace of Monaco' Images Preview Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly

Stills of Kidman as the Hollywood starlet-turned-princess whet the appetite for Olivier Dahan’s historical drama.

Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, wasn’t finished in time for Cannes, but images of Kidman as Hollywood starlet-turned-princess Grace Kelly whet the appetite for Olivier Dahan’s historical drama.

The shots suggest Dahan is not taking a lookalike approach for the film, something Kidman, speaking to THR in fall 2012 when Grace still was shooting, confirmed. “I’m not trying to re-create Grace, just capture her essence. Like [Dahan’s Edith Piaf drama] La Vie en Rose, this is more of an art movie than a strict biopic.” The Weinstein Co. will bow Grace of Monaco in an awards-season qualifying run stateside Dec. 27.

Leonardo DiCaprio, 'Great Gatsby' Star, Explains Passion For F. Scott Fitzgerald Book At Cannes FF

CANNES, France — Like millions of others, Leonardo DiCaprio read and loved "The Great Gatsby" as a teenager. But he says he only recently began to understand it.

The star of Baz Luhrmann's kaleidoscopic screen adaptation, said reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's book again, he came to believe that it was not the tale of tragic romance he had once believed.

"I remember picking up the novel as a youth and being entertained by it, fascinated with Gatsby but not by any stretch of the imagination grasping the profound sort of existential power that Fitzgerald has in writing this book," the 38-year-old DiCaprio told reporters Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Ultimately I was fascinated by Gatsby as a character. I was moved by him. It no longer became a love story to me. It became a tragedy of this new American, this man in a new world where everything is possible, and at a time of great opulence in the 1920s. He was trying to become a great Rockefeller, a great American, and somewhere along the way has lost a sense of who he was."

In the movie, DiCaprio glows with health, bursts with brio – and wears immaculate linen suits – as Gatsby, a self-made man of mystery whose Long Island mansion becomes the epicenter of impossibly glittering parties while he nurses a private romantic yearning.

DiCaprio's the one thing in the film most critics have been enthusiastic about, and he gave Cannes' opening day a big dose of star power as he posed for photos with fellow cast members including Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton.

DiCaprio – who first worked with the director on the 1996 film "Romeo + Juliet" – said Luhrmann brought out the best in his cast.

"He inspires you every day in the workplace to not only do your best, but dream big," DiCaprio said. "You cannot get in a room with this man and not feel inspired, not feel nostalgic, not feel like you're part of something special. He brings that out in everybody he works with, and it's infectious.

"He's also not afraid to take on incredibly classic stories that are embedded in our culture and that are incredibly risky to do."

The risk of adapting a much-loved work is evident in the movie's muted reception from journalists in Cannes, and the mixed reviews it has received in the United States, where it opened last week.

But it is a box-office hit, and cast and director all expressed pride in being faithful to the spirit of Fitzgerald's 1925 novel – despite the anachronistic soundtrack that features Jay-Z putting a hip-hop spin on Jazz Age sounds.

"Leonardo used to drive me crazy – but in a good way – because he would say, `are we honoring that book?'" Luhrmann said. "And that was our singular focus."

Luhrmann is a Cannes darling – his first feature, "Strictly Ballroom," played here in 1992 and "Moulin Rouge" opened the festival a decade later.

He said he was delighted to bring "Gatsby" to the French Riviera, where Fitzgerald and his wife and Zelda lived "a youthquake" of glamor and decadence much like the one the writer captured in his novel.

"He wrote it 20 miles up the road here," Luhrmann said, "while his wife was having an affair on the beach just down there ... and there was a French airman buzzing their house, who she was having the affair with.

"The thing I think about that is, how much of that pain and beauty went into the writing."
