ONTD Original: One-hit wonder women that saved the 90's

Music in the 1990's was a whirlwind of pop, rock, rap, r&b, alternative, dance, punk, grunge, and even ska. Fueled by the new "The Internet", 90's music trends seemed to change about every couple of years, but there are certain artists who kept us calm, constant, and comfortable that are still listenable to this very day. Let's relive some of the one-hit wonder women that saved the 90's!

Wilson Phillips - Hold On (1990)

Growing up together in Southern California, this American vocal trio consisted of celeb daughters Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips. Their fathers are Brian Wilson of "The Beach Boys" and John and Michelle Phillips of "The Mamas & the Papas". Their 1990 self-titled debut album sold over 10 million albums worldwide and their major hit "Hold On" landed at number one on Billboard, knocking Madonna's "Vogue" out of the top spot. Wilson Phillips made history for the best selling album by a female group, a record previously held by The Supremes. The group disbanded in 1992 but have recently reunited to appear in movies, television, and to sell things on QVC.

4 Non Blondes - What's Up (1993)

These ladies from San Francisco hit the charts in '93 with their only hit "What's Up" that went number one in eight different countries! The group disbanded in 1995 when their lead singer, Linda Perry, moved on from the band to start a solo career. Perry has since had major success in production and writing work for major music artists such as Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, and P!nk. Perry is married to Sara Gilbert who played Darlene on "Roseanne".

Lisa Loeb - Stay (1994)

One of the original hipsters, Lisa Loeb is an American singer-songwriter who used to make music for her neighbor Ethan Hawke. Lisa gave the original version of "Stay" to Ethen to use in one of his plays, but Ethan instead gave the song to Ben Stiller to use in the movie "Reality Bites" for the film's ending credits. Because of this, "Stay" eventually went to number one on Billboard which earned Loeb the distinction of being the first artist to top the Hot 100 before being signed to a record label."Stay" ultimately sold 900,000 copies in the US and was nominated for a Grammy.

Des'ree - You Gotta Be (1994)

An R&B recording artist from Britain, Des'ree was signed to Sony in 1991 when her boyfriend sent in a demo to the label. Major success didn't arrive until 1994's "You Gotta Be" rose to number 5 on Billboard. The song also became the most played video music video on VH1 and remained on Billboard's Airplay Chart for 80 weeks. Des'ree has won a Brit Award, an Ivor Novello Award, World Music Award, Urban Music Award and a BMI Award for over five million plays of "You Gotta Be" in America. Des'ree made a surprise appearance in 2007 to sue Beyonce for covering "I'm Kissing You" without her permission. Des'ree is also a vegetarian. Enjoy a VH1 Pop-Up Video version of "You Gotta Be" above!

Joan Osborne - One Of Us (1995)

Raised as a Roman Catholic, Joan Osborne distanced herself from her religion quickly after childhood. Performing in the underground New York club scene of the late 1980's, Joan was discovered by a major label and was signed in 1995 alongside her heavenly hit "One of Us". The track reveals different aspects of God - asking various questions that challenge the lister on how they may relate to God. The music video was shot on Coney Island and I'll never forget VH1 Pop-Up Video proclaiming that Joan's nose ring was fake."One of Us" went to number one in four countries and was certified gold in the US.

Meredith Brooks - Bitch (1997)

Brooks was signed to major label Capitol Records in 1995 and released her only hit song "Bitch" in 1997. The track topped out at number two on Billboard for four weeks behind "I'll Be Missing You", was certified gold, and was nominated for a Grammy. Brooks opened for the Rolling Stones in '98 where RS fans threw rocks and tampons at her giving her an eye injury. Brooks went on to produce an album for Jennifer Love Hewitt and her song "Shine" was used as a "Dr. Phil" theme song for four years.

Jennifer Paige - Crush (1998)

Born in Georgia, Paige began singing at the age of five at local coffeehouses with her brother. She moved to Los Angeles after touring with a cover band at the age of 17 and connected with a music producer that helped her record her first song "Crush". The track was sent to radio stations all across Los Angeles and eventually became an international success going number one in Spain, Denmark, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, and Australia where it was certified 2x Platinum. It spent five weeks at number one on the Canadian singles chart and sold 700,000 copies in the US by the end of 1998! She crushed it imo.

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (1998)

A song that was originally released by LA band "Ednaswap" in 1995, "Torn" was covered by Australian actor Natalie Imbruglia in 1997. The song was number one on the Billboard Airplay Chart for 14 weeks, broke the airplay record in the UK for six weeks, went gold and platinum in 8 countries, went number one on three different Billboard US charts, went number one in five other countries, and sold four million singles worldwide."Torn" received a Grammy nomination, losing to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". "Torn" holds the record for most played song on Australian radio since 1990. It's been played more than 300,500 times since its 1998 release, an average of 75 times a day!

Captain Marvel won't be in Avengers: Infinity War

Captain Marvel is Marvel's first female-led superhero film. The film has already been pushed back for films such as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, but Cap was rumored to appear in Infinity War. However, now the Russos are denying that claim, perhaps because Infinity War has been reduced to only one movie.

Captain Marvel will also be set in the 90s and will supposedly feature a classic Marvel villain.

I'm pissed and not optimistic that they are lying for the sake of surprising us. oh well.....which classic villain should she fight, ONTD?

ONTD Original: Two Cons In One Post!

$
0
0
I had the pleasure of going to D23 Expo and San Diego Comic Con this month and felt I should share the personal experience in case anyone on here is curious as to what they’re like and need reasons to go (or you know, stay home) Along the way I was joined by fellow ONTDers @theblackwidow, @somnus_angel, @ace-kay, and @jellycar who made my stay that much more great. *Note: since by now all the trailers are out and better journalists have objectively covered everything this is mostly my personal recollections of what stood out most to me and what I think you’d be most interested in knowing*
Without further ado...

"" D23 Expo

(Kate Micucci promotes Duck Tales on Disney XD)

This was my 2nd time here, and like 2 years before this did not disappoint. Everything owned by Disney was advertised here and you really got a sense how it owns you childhood and your children’s childhood. Thanks to somnus_angel and her sister we all got to go to the live-action panel which included sneak peaks at Mary Poppins Returns (IDEC if it’s going to be a complete retread it’ll be worth it just for more 2-D animated fantasy scenes), The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (I’ve the sinking feeling this is going to Burton Alice In Wonderland 2.0 in terms of flat plot yet Perfume Commercial Meets YA Cover Art aesthetic I live for, plus Keira as the Sugar Plum Fairy is every fashion sketch I did as a 1st-grader) The Last Jedi, (Kind of disappointed it was BTS montage and not a formal 2nd trailer but I can’t judge too harshly when this was my 1st time being in the same room with Mark Hamill) and of course Avengers: Infinity War (My  biggest concern was this being Too Many Cooks with superheroes the Russos make impossible tasks look so fucking easy to execute and viewing the clip gave me the same rush as imagining Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars pitch on Parks and Recreation) *side note but I’m just saying even with a Broadway show there is just no way Aladdin can get better than in animated form but if you insist on remaking your animated movies in live-action The Black Cauldron/Chronicles of Prydain has SO MUCH POTENTIAL*

(One of several indoor parades)

Why You Should Go: If you like anything including Disney animation, Star Wars or Marvel, this has every panel, merchandise, fashion piece, and exhibit you could imagine.
Why You Should Netflix Binge With The AC Instead: The road to seeing their movie panels includes sleeping on concrete with fluorescent lights and recent Blu-Ray releases playing non-stop and that’s ALSO if you want to be the first to own exclusive store items. There’s also neat aspects of the con floor you can’t get to unless you have a wristband in advance which you don’t know require a wristband until it’s too late (which is the only reason I couldn’t do the Duck Tales money bin photo op. )

SDCC

(Lego Poke'mon)

After spending a few days at Disneyland and California Adventure it was off to San Diego which I spent with my hotel mates theblackwidow, somnus_angel and her sis. First thing I did was wait 90 minutes for the Blade Runner 2049 exhibit and after that I would not have expected the result to make up for baking outside but instead it’s everything a movie promotion at SDCC should be--you don a VR headset while sitting in a D-Box moving chair, then walk into a set recreation, see props and costumes on display, and interact with perfectly in-character extras before getting some whiskey and noodles. (Which TBH makes Westworld’s exhibit are the more puzzling because if you’re not going to do a full-size recreation of Sweetwater than WHAT’S THE POINT) On Friday I went to several art and animation related panels as well as a quite fascinating one on the science of rejuvenation and could the Lazarus Pit exist IRL (depressing spoiler: technically geneticists have all the pieces they need to further research on preventing age-related diseases but can’t go any further due to shit for funding) Then it was Hall H Saturday, and this was the first time I wanted to see everything they were promoting. Everyone freaked the fuck out upon seeing the Iron Giant cameo in Vaporwave: The Movie Ready Player One, the panel for Blade Runner 2049 gave us hope that Jared Leto has been a non-existent hologram this whole time, and Damage Control (seewhatididthere) showed Batfleck non-soberingly avoid answering if he would continue being Batfleck or if he’d focus more on his increasingly demanding role of Midlife Crisis Man.

(Shown: a summary of the entire Justice League panel)

Stranger Things, Charlize Theron, and Westworld went by without any major bombshells (although I am still shaking and crying from that mix of Thriller) Then Marvel came and blessed ONTD with what will be its new favorite wig-snatching reaction gif for 2018 in Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok looked exactly like the playroom of a child of the 80’s who’d pose He-Man, the Hulk, She-Ra and one half of Hasbro’s Posable Tears For Fears on top of a sideways Lite-Brite board. Finally, Sunday was exploring every square inch of the dealer’s room to pick up any illustration books I could find before gorging on fish tacos with @somnus_angel,  @ace-kay and @jellycar watching Game of Thrones.

(Best adult slumber-party ever!)

Why You Should Go: This con is so massive you’ll be guaranteed to have every last obscure fandom you’re in catered to, plus it’s a beautiful location and the con most likely to have A-list guests
Why You Should Netflix Binge With The AC Instead: Most of the sneak peaks go online the same day, plus you could easily spend more time in line than in panels.

So that was my month of cons, ONTD! Do YOU wish the Westworld exhibit was more immersive and could serve more than only 120 visitors a day?? ""

Hits Daily Double and Tyler the Creator accuse Tidal of rigging the charts

$
0
0

  • Lana Del Rey, Meek Mill, and Tyler the Creator are in a very close race for the #1 album on next week's Billboard chart.

  • Lana is currently in the lead with a projected 85-90k SPS, 60-65k pure sales. Meek Mill is next with 85-90k SPS, 40-45k pure sales. Tyler is 3rd with 80-85k SPS, 48-53k pure sales (more pure sales than Meek, but less in SPS).

  • Both Tyler the Creator and Hits Daily Double are saying that Tidal is manipulating the charts.

  • Meek Mill's album requires no free trial or Tidal account to listen to the album, meaning that no revenue is generated from the streams. This is different from Spotify where free accounts have ads and therefore generate revenue.

  • HDD says that Billboard is planning to count these streams and that many of the lower staff members think this is the most blatant example of chart manipulation being counted in recent memory and are angry at the higher ups for not stopping it. For example, when Tidal, Samsung, and Sprint bought a million copies of Rihanna's ANTI and Jay Z's Magna Carta and 4:44, Billboard did not count it on the charts (tho RIAA did count it for platnium certification).

Tidal claiming huge streaming numbers despite being the lowest revenue generator out of every streaming service turning out to be liars and cheaters? I'm SHOCKED

Tom Hardy to Star in Bosnian War Movie

$

- It's based on a book “My War Gone By, I Miss It So” by Anthony Loyd. The book is about: "Lloyd’s personal account of the Bosnian War, and alternates between his experiences in Bosnia and personal reflections of his time in the British army, his parents’ divorce, his estrangement from his father, and his heroin addiction."

-
The author wanted to go to Bosnia because his family was really into military:"Loyd was born into a distinguished family steeped in military tradition, raised on stories of wartime and ancestral heroes. He longed to experience war from the front lines, so he left England at age 26 to document the conflict in Bosnia, where he witnessed a lethal struggle among the Serbs, Croatians, and Bosnian Muslims.
