The snobs and critics will have a field day with the US author’s latest work – but I’m not joining in

Renowned author Dan Brown woke up in his luxurious four-poster bed in his expensive $10 million house – and immediately he felt angry. Most people would have thought that the 48-year-old man had no reason to be angry. After all, the famous writer had a new book coming out. But that was the problem. A new book meant an inevitable attack on the rich novelist by the wealthy wordsmith’s fiercest foes. The critics.

Renowned author Dan Brown hated the critics. Ever since he had become one of the world’s top renowned authors they had made fun of him. They had mocked bestselling book The Da Vinci Code, successful novel Digital Fortress, popular tome Deception Point, money-spinning volume Angels & Demons and chart-topping work of narrative fiction The Lost Symbol.

The critics said his writing was clumsy, ungrammatical, repetitive and repetitive.

They said it was full of unnecessary tautology. They said his prose was swamped in a sea of mixed metaphors. For some reason they found something funny in sentences such as “His eyes went white, like a shark about to attack.” They even say my books are packed with banal and superfluous description, thought the 5ft 9in man. He particularly hated it when they said his imagery was nonsensical. It made his insect eyes flash like a rocket.

Renowned author Dan Brown got out of his luxurious four-poster bed in his expensive $10 million house and paced the bedroom, using the feet located at the ends of his two legs to propel him forwards. He knew he shouldn’t care what a few jealous critics thought. His new book Inferno was coming out on Tuesday, and the 480-page hardback published by Doubleday with a recommended US retail price of $29.95 was sure to be a hit. Wasn’t it?

I’ll call my agent, pondered the prosperous scribe. He reached for the telephone using one of his two hands. “Hello, this is renowned author Dan Brown,” spoke renowned author Dan Brown. “I want to talk to literary agent John Unconvincingname.”

“Mr Unconvincingname, it’s renowned author Dan Brown,” told the voice at the other end of the line. Instantly the voice at the other end of the line was replaced by a different voice at the other end of the line. “Hello, it’s literary agent John Unconvincingname,” informed the new voice at the other end of the line.

“Hello agent John, it’s client Dan,” commented the pecunious scribbler. “I’m worried about new book Inferno. I think critics are going to say it’s badly written.”

The voice at the other end of the line gave a sigh, like a mighty oak toppling into a great river, or something else that didn’t sound like a sigh if you gave it a moment’s thought.“Who cares what the stupid critics say?” advised the literary agent.“They’re just snobs. You have millions of fans.”

That’s true, mused the accomplished composer of thrillers that combined religion, high culture and conspiracy theories. His books were read by everyone from renowned politician President Obama to renowned musician Britney Spears. It was said that a copy of The Da Vinci Codehad even found its way into the hands of renowned monarch the Queen. He was grateful for his good fortune, and gave thanks every night in his prayers to renowned deity God.

“Think of all the money you’ve made,” recommended the literary agent. That was true too. The thriving ink-slinger’s wealth had allowed him to indulge his passion for great art. Among his proudest purchases were a specially commissioned landscape by acclaimed painter Vincent van Gogh and a signed first edition by revered scriptwriter William Shakespeare.

Renowned author Dan Brown smiled, the ends of his mouth curving upwards in a physical expression of pleasure. He felt much better. If your books brought innocent delight to millions of readers, what did it matter whether you knew the difference between a transitive and an intransitive verb?

“Thanks, John,” he thanked. Then he put down the telephone and perambulated on foot to the desk behind which he habitually sat on a chair to write his famous books on an Apple iMac MD093B/A computer. New book Inferno, the latest in his celebrated series about fictional Harvard professor Robert Langdon, was inspired by top Italian poet Dante. It wouldn’t be the last in the lucrative sequence, either. He had all the sequels mapped out. The Mozart Acrostic. The Michelangelo Wordsearch. The Newton Sudoku.

The 190lb adult male human being nodded his head to indicate satisfaction and returned to his bedroom by walking there. Still asleep in the luxurious four-poster bed of the expensive $10 million house was beautiful wife Mrs Brown. Renowned author Dan Brown gazed admiringly at the pulchritudinous brunette’s blonde tresses, flowing from her head like a stream but made from hair instead of water and without any fish in. She was as majestic as the finest sculpture by Caravaggio or the most coveted portrait by Rodin.I like the attractive woman, thought the successful man.

Perhaps one day, inspired by beautiful wife Mrs Brown, he would move into romantic poetry, like market-leading British rhymester John Keats. That would be good, opined the talented person, and got back into the luxurious four-poster bed. He felt as happy as a man who has something to be happy about and is suitably happy about it.

This makes some good points about popular fiction. Making money is important.
    But also: LOL .

Do you have guilty pleasure reads, ontd?

On making her own decisions because that’s her prerogative…

Since I was a little girl, being active and taking care of myself has been a part of who I am. So when I’ve been heavier or I haven’t met my own standards, it’s been a personal choice to get back in shape — not because of anyone else’s opinions.

On time-traveling speed backwards on the treadmill to achieve dat ass…

My favorite way to tone my butt is going in reverse on the treadmill and the elliptical. It targets those muscles that are often overlooked. Yeah, that’s my big secret: Do everything backwards!

On her upcoming residency in Vegas…

Take one look at Britney Spears and it’s clear she’s never been in better shape. “I’m working out really hard for my upcoming shows in Vegas,” the singer says of her two-year engagement at Planet Hollywood, which should open by fall. “The performances won’t be special—they’ll be a massive party from start to finish. And to pull this off, I have to be in top condition and running at full speed.”

“I’m excited because the shows will have state-of-the-art technology and be really cutting-edge. But a big part of my decision to do this was my boys. When they’re not with me in Nevada, I can hop on a plane and be with them in Los Angeles in 45 minutes.”

On Album 8, also known as Blackout 2.0: It Gets Urbaner

She recorded the single “Ooh La La” for this summer’s family comedy The Smurfs 2, and is currently in the studio working on her eighth CD. While a release date hasn’t been scheduled, the word from Britney is that “the record is definitely going to be more hip-hop than pop this time around.”

The New York Times sat down to talk with RuPaul and it's a lovely little interview. Seeing Ru sans makeup and talking very frankly about his personal life is a nice change, and he addresses issues surrounding drag and gay rights that he doesn't often talk about -- including his opinion that acceptance of gays will inevitably take a downturn. On a sweeter note, we also hear about his 19-year relationship and how he and his partner may get married "for business reasons." Watch above to see RuPaul get real and still be just about as fabulous as a person can be.

The single actually came out a little over a week ago but I don't think it was ever posted here. It's available now on iTunes.

Reps for Ramona, Carole, LuAnn, Heather, Sonja and Aviva have come to an agreement that the women will sign their contracts for Season 6, an individual told TheWrap.

The insider said that no contracts have been finalized, but are expected to be completed early next week during business hours, despite reports to the contrary on Saturday. The network is remaning cautious about the agreements until the women actually sign on the dotted line.

We're told the network didn't budge on its previous offers, despite the women's "Friends-style" negotiating tactic that postponed production earlier this week. Production is expected to resume as soon as the agreements are inked next week.

On Friday, Bravo insiders told TheWrap that the network was not going to back down on its previous salary offers to the ladies. It would rather fire the entire cast, postpone production and recast the show then set the precedent of allowing its casts to band together during negotiations.

Production insiders said Singer, Radziwill, Thomson and Drescher had accepted the network's offer and were on their way to inking their contracts before deciding they wanted more money.

"They're getting greedy and feeling entitled," an insider said about firing the entire cast if they don't stand down. "They are all replaceable." While Bravo wanted to avoid recasting, it already had new cast members waiting in the wings and was prepping to find more if the women didn't accept their offers.

Kyle Richards Talks Returning to RHOBH With Sister Kim: "If We Did, It Would Be Together!"

Kyle's lips are sealed when it comes to her season-four status, but that doesn't mean she won't drop any clues.

Tipping toeing around the much-buzzed about topic, the mother of four would not confirm whether she'll be back on Bravo, but she did dish deets on sister Kim's status.

"Our relationship is in a much better place," the reality told E! News while promoting her contribution to the new Clorox Ick-tionary. "My sister is in a great place, she's very strong."

Although Kim's recovery from her alcohol addiction was a big storyline for season three, there were rumors the former child actress would not be returning to the show, but Kyle hints the twosome will return together.

"We can't really talk about [the next season] whether we're moving forward or not, but if we did, it would be together," she said.

"There have been so many rumors," Kyle said of the new castmember, who will be filling Maloof's high-heeled shoes. "There's that woman [the Baroness] there's Lisa Rinna, there was another one yesterday and all of these are exactly what you just said: rumors."

She continued, adding she has no idea who will be joining the upcoming season, "That really is true, that's not even like, 'Oh I can't talk about it.' I really really don't know."

Kyle can talk about the type of woman she hopes will join the show.

"Someone who's a girl's girl, someone who is supportive, someone who is intelligent, someone with a sense of humor and likes to have fun," she explained. "So I feel like it's someone that I could have fun with and wouldn't stab you in the back and try to make up lies about you and make you look bad so they look better—ha!"

Miss Lawrence Explains Why He Doesn't Get Along With Kandi!

Over the years, we've all gotten to know and love Miss Lawrence on The Real Housewives of Atlanta. He started off his RHoA run as Sheree Whitfield's trusty gusband, but has since flocked to Kenya Moore's side on Season 5.

But back in Season 3, he collaborated with a different Housewife, Kandi Burruss. The pair worked on "Closet Freak" together, a song that proved Miss Lawrence wasn't just a great hairdresser — girl's got some pipes on her, too! Unlike Kim Zolciak, Lawrence can actually sing and Kandi loved that. Kandi and Lawrence seemed excited about their future business relationship … until things got sour.

During a recent interview with The Jasmine Brand, Lawrence opened up about their demise.

"I think Kandi developed ill feelings because I declined her offer to be signed to Kandi Koated Entertainment and I declined because it wasn’t really a fair contract," Lawrence explained.

Apparently, signing with Kandi meant giving up a percentage of everything he ever worked on for the rest of his career, and Lawrence wasn't cool with that. He went on to share that Kandi doesn't love rejection, so she never really got over the snub. In fact, his song has been taken down from iTunes.

But Lawrence opted to skip the drama and just let it go, since it really didn't affect him in the end.

"I’m fine. I’m gonna still eat my caviar honey and feel nothing. It’s no tea. I don’t eat caviar for real, but you understand what I’m saying," he said.

  • 05/11/13--23:21: ♕Perfect Pop Post♕
  • Najwa Karam, the Reigning Queen of Arabic Music, welcomes you in.
    Najwa

Have you ever wondered what your favourite pop stars’ personalities are really like? MTV Lebanon has compiled a summary of the personalities of MENA’s biggest pop stars based on their appearances on Kalam Nawaem. Here is the round-up about Haifa Wehbe, Nawal Al Zoghbi, Najwa Karam and Elissa.
    Elissa2
Elissa is the one who is most often at the centre of real drama and feuds (as opposed to those created by the tabloids). This is probably because she is so honest that she tends to hurt people’s feelings. Naïve to a fault, Elissa is often moody and hurt. She wears her heart on her sleeve and this is why she is believable as the Voice of Romantic Music.
    Najwa1
Najwa Karam, known as Shams el-Ghinnieh (the sun of song), is the Great Voice of Arabic music. She is also known as a true lady: classy, respectable and good-hearted, Najwa conducts herself with the utmost respect of self and of others. She is never seen to be unkind. Her longevity puts her in the same sphere as Umm Kulthum and Fairouz.
    Nawal
Nawal Al Zoghbi has been around for a very long time and, through it all, has kept her emphasis on emotional realness at the forefront of her public persona. She is down-to-earth and quite a jokester, often prompting others to call her “cute” as the go-to description. She does not forget faces as she is quite the people person, her popularity making her a favourite among all classes of people.

    Haifa
Haifa Wehbe is known to be very sexy and naughty, often pissing off the MENA conservatives because of her sexpot status. However, Haifa is also very gentle in her dealings with others and is also known to be very generous. She laughs a lot and tries to keep others laughing, preferring to deal with her troubles and her mourning behind closed doors.

Some say that the reason there are divorce rumors surrounding Nancy is that she cried during a performance by Mirna one of the contestants at Arab Idol,  when Nancy Ajram could not stop crying.
But Nancy Ajram then explained that she was crying because of the difficult decision she had to make in choosing one of the contestants and eliminate the other.

Ahlam and Shams have been going at it for years now. Shams, back in February, alleged that Ahlam had made death threats against her and took her case to court via a lawsuit. The lawsuit alleged that Ahlam had threatened to kill Shams and that the UAE singer also defamed and libelled Shams. The case has been stalled thus far in Beirut as the prosecution, represented by Maya Knaan, waits for more evidence from Shams and her lawyer, Samer Simon. If Ahlam is found responsible, she could faces anything ranging from fines to up to three years in prison.

She then stated that she prays for Syria and hoped that her followers would follow suit.

The Voice Season 3 winner Cassadee Pope has officially announced that she will be premiering her new single on the June 4th episode of NBC's The Voice. This will be her first single after her win from her debut album which she has been working on in Nashville since her December win.

Pope is currently on a radio tour to support her single though not even a clip has been released officially and is performing several new songs which feature her new focus on the country genre, influenced by her willingness to change herself entirely to get famous Voice coach Blake Shelton and her label Big Machine, which also hosts superstar Taylor Swift. Her best-selling single from The Voice, a cover of Miranda Lambert's "Over," was also a country song.

    Source:TwitterSource: Youtube

So she still can't sing but that should surprise no one. I honestly thought that she would put something out before this to ride that wave of fame but it's almost 6 months since her win so she's more likely to go the Route of Irrelevance that the other Voice winners have gone so far. Also, she's going to need less bland songs to avoid dissolving into the country world of white girls with guitars. Her stuff with Hey Monday was better than this by far.

Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden revenge-porn flick Zero Dark Thirty was the biggest publicity coup for the CIA this century outside of the actual killing of Osama bin Laden. But the extent to which the CIA shaped the film has remained unclear. Now, a memo obtained by Gawker shows that the CIA actively, and apparently successfully, pressured Mark Boal to remove scenes that made them look bad from the Zero Dark Thirty script.

The CIA's whitewashing effort is revealed in a cache of documents newly released under a Freedom of Information Act request about the CIA's cooperation with Bigelow and Boal. The documents include a 2012 memo—initially classified "SECRET"—summarizing five conference calls between Boal and the CIA's Office of Public Affairs in late 2011. "The purpose for these discussions was for OPA officers to help promote an appropriate portrayal of the Agency and the Bin Ladin operation," according to the memo. (Hundreds of pages of CIA documents about the film were released last year; the memo obtained by Gawker was approved for release late last month.)

During these calls, Boal "verbally shared the screenplay" for Zero Dark Thirty in order to get the CIA's feedback, and the CIA's public affairs department verbally asked Boal to take out parts that they objected to. According to the memo, he did.

    Here are the key changes:

The much-discussed opening scene of Zero Dark Thirty features the main character Maya, played by Jessica Chastain, observing a detainee at a CIA black site as he is water-boarded and shoved into a tiny box during an interrogation. It appears that an early version had Maya participating in the torture. But during their conference calls, the CIA told Boal that this was not true to life. The memo reads: "For this scene we emphasized that substantive debriefers [i.e. Maya] did not administer [Enhanced Interrogation Techniques] because in this scene he had a non-interrogator, substantive debriefer assisting in a dosing technique."

According to the memo, "Boal said he would fix this." Indeed, in the final film Maya doesn't touch the prisoner during this scene. The decision to have Maya abstain from the torture was as significant artistically as it was factually. Her ambivalence was a key part of her character, and critics picked over every detail of the torture scenes, including Maya's status as an observer rather than a participant, for meaning in the debate over torture that the movie sparked.

Wired's Spencer Ackerman, for example, interpreted Maya's complex relationship to on-screen torture as a sign of a complex inner life: "Maya is... a cipher: she is shown coming close to puking when observing the torture. But she also doesn’t object to it." Of course, the scene reads a bit differently if the choice was dictated by a CIA propaganda officer.

The CIA also took issue with an interrogation scene that featured a dog intimidating a detainee. Boal took it out: "We raised an objection that such tactics would not be used by the Agency," the memo reads. "Boal confirmed in January that the use of dogs was taken out of the screenplay."

The CIA might not have done it, but threatening detainees with dogs was a well-known feature of the War on Terror, even allowed in certain circumstances by U.S. Army interrogation manuals. The technique was pioneered in Guantanamo Bay and cruelly elaborated upon at Abu Ghraib. Some of the most disturbing photos from the Abu Ghraib scandal featured military dogs menacing naked prisoners.

The CIA also successfully pressed for a change outside of interrogation scenes. One scene in the early script featured a wild party in Islamabad, and the CIA asked Boal to take it out. He did.

    From the memo:

"One scene early in the film that was objected to was a rooftop party in Islamabad where an officer, after drinking fires a celebratory burst of AK-47 gunfire into the air. We insisted mixing drinking and firearms is a major violation and actions like this do not happen in real life. We requested this be taken out of the film. Boal confirmed he took this out of the film."

To be fair, drunken firearms abuse was more a Blackwater thing.

Another minor issue was the fact that Maya analyzed videos of detainee interviews in order to track down Osama bin Laden's courier. The CIA told Boal that they didn't videotape interviews and use them in analysis. (This is itself a lie of course—the CIA did record 92 tapes, totaling hundreds of hours, of the interrogation and torture of Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. It subsequently destroyed them.) But Boal explained "visually this is the only way to show research in an interesting cinematic way," according to the memo. The CIA "did not request Boal take this scene out of the movie," and it remained.

The document reveals the extent to which CIA access was a quid pro quo arrangement, in which Boal made substantive changes to his script to appease them. "As an agency, we've been pretty forward-leaning with Boal," wrote a CIA flack to her peers in documents released last year. "He's agreed to share scripts and details about the movie with us so we're absolutely comfortable with what he will be showing."

Reached for via email, Mark Boal wouldn't comment on the record. But a person with knowledge of the Zero Dark Thirty production process confirmed that specific changes had been made to the script after suggestions from the CIA, including Maya's lack of participation in the torture scene. But this person said these changes were only due to security or accuracy concerns, and the CIA had no input on creative decisions.

Update: in an email, Boal wrote:

We honored certain requests to keep operational details and the identity of the participants confidential. But as with any publication or work of art, the final decisions as to the content were made by the filmmakers.

S.H.I.E.L.D.Viral Website Helps Get Pulses Pounding – We Are The Rising Tide

Tonight’s the night that ABC really start laying it on thick with SHIELD promotion. Here’s hoping they don’t peak too soon – the series won’t start until September.

When the Hulk video leaked the other day we saw our first reference to Rising Tide. Now they have their own website. And it’s going to go viral.

We Are The Rising Tide leads to a fairly generic SHIELD page, but add a backslash and ‘blog’ onto the end of the URL and everything is a bit more fun. There’s space for plenty of videos, too, but they’re not live yet. Or maybe they are, by the time you read this.

Incidentally, the main page says we can unlock the full trailer in HD by using the #coulsonlives hashtag. So… get to it, I guess.

The first official photo for Open Grave has been revealed.

Open Grave is about a man (Sharlto Copley) wakes up in the wilderness, in a pit full of dead bodies, with no memory and must determine if the murderer is one of the strangers who rescued him, or if he himself is the killer. It also stars Josie Ho, Thomas Kretschmann, Joseph Morgan, Erin Richards and Hugo's Max Wrottesley.

This movie needs a release date already, more Sharlto the better imo

BFI Southbank celebrates ‘The Love Goddess’ with screenings of classic films including Gilda, Cover Girl and You’ll Never Get Rich in June.

Rita Hayworth had a torrid personal life which saw her married and divorced five times by the time she was in her mid-forties, leading her to proclaim “men fell in love with Gilda, but they wake up with me”.

Throughout June, BFI Southbank will present a season of ten of her best-loved films, offering audiences a chance to fall in love not only with Gilda, but Rita and her many characters. If her star power was affirmed through pop-culture references alone, then Hayworth can be considered film royalty: in The Shawshank Redemption inmates went wild over her, in Mullholland Drive Laura Harring’s character named herself after the actress when she suffers from amnesia, and Madonna decreed that ‘Rita Hayworth gave good face’ in her chart-topping hit Vogue.

Classic musicals including You Were Never Lovlier (1942) and Cover Girl (1944) will screen alongside memorable film noir pictures Gilda (1946) and The Lady from Shanghai (1947), all showing, time and again, why Rita Hayworth remains such an iconic star.

Screenings taking place in the season:

    Only Angels Have Wings
USA 1939. Dir Howard Hawks. With Cary Grant, Jean Arthur. 121min. U
A hard-bitten Cary Grant is holed up in the Andes running an air-freight service in an almost documentary style, life-and-death Boy’s Own Adventure that’s also a terrific love story of unsentimental camaraderie. Into this feast of character-acting steps big-hearted Jean Arthur. Things grow yet more complicated when young Rita Hayworth vamps her way into the picture that made her name.

    Angels Over Broadway
USA 1940. Dir Ben Hecht. With Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Thomas Mitchell. 78min. U
How many movie styles can you pack into 78 minutes' Written, directed and produced by Ben Hecht, (Nothing Sacred; His Girl Friday; Notorious), this fast-talking, deliciously high-boozing, bitter comedy is also a crime thriller crossed with a backstager, a heartbreaker beneath film noir lighting. Handsome, gum-chewing Douglas Fairbanks inveigles Hayworth’s radiant young dancer into a risky gambling plot masterminded by a gloriously grandiose playwright.

    Blood and Sand
USA 1941. Dir Rouben Mamoulian. With Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell. 125min. PG
Ever wondered what costume design can do for a picture' Shooting in luscious Technicolor, Mamoulian took a tale of a toreador, ensured everyone shone in super-saturated colours, and pitched Tyrone Power into a dilemma between faithful Darnell and temptress Hayworth’s explosive trademark mix of hauteur and come-hither. Gazing at her at a bullfight, Laird Cregar drools, ‘If this is death in the afternoon, she’s death in the evening.’ Fri 7 June 18:20 NFT2

    You’ll Never Get Rich
USA 1941. Dir Sidney Lanfield. With Fred Astaire, Robert Benchley. 88min. U
This near-screwball musical-comedy of misunderstanding boasts a largely lunatic plot with Astaire joining the army to avoid being shot by showgirl Hayworth’s brother who isn’t her brother. Still with me' Smart Hayworth equals Astaire step for step in their opening routine, delights in a rhumba and winds up duetting with him in a Cole Porter finale on a wedding-cake in the shape of a tank.

    You Were Never Lovelier
USA 1942. Dir William A Seiter. With Fred Astaire, Adolphe Menjou. 97min. U
Hayworth’s second pairing with Astaire – the only film in which anyone fell in love with him because of his voice – is a 30s mistaken-identity comedy in 40s (well-cut) clothing. Latin maestro Xavier Cugat heats up Jerome Kern’s score and highlights include Astaire’s tap solo all over his enraged boss’ office and Hayworth’s joy as she matches him in ‘Shorty George’ and ‘I’m Old-Fashioned’.

    Cover Girl
USA 1944. Dir Charles Vidor. With Gene Kelly, Phil Silvers, Eve Arden.107min. U
Loyalty is tested as top-form Hayworth swaps Gene Kelly’s Brooklyn club for Broadway fame via Vanity magazine. Hayworth positively gleams, doubles as her character Rusty’s grandmother and dances like a dream in the sockeroo title number. With Phil Silvers making it an ebullient song’n’dance trio, astringent Eve Arden, Jerome Kern/Ira Gershwin songs and more millinery than you can shake a stick at, it’s the finest musical Hayworth made.

    Gilda
USA 1946. Dir Charles Vidor. With Glenn Ford, George Macready. 110min. U
Hayworth’s crowning glory is a jaw-dropping textbook of Hollywood sexual politics. Her climactic strip ‘Put The Blame On Mame’ (she removes one glove) is one of the most erotic sequences in cinema history. But it’s also shockingly clear the moment lethal George Macready smoothly picks up Glenn Ford in the thriller’s opening scene that this is one of the gayest straight films ever made. A matchless maelstrom of jealousy.

    The Lady from Shanghai
USA 1947. Dir Orson Welles. With Welles, Everett Sloane. 87min. PG
‘Some people can smell danger. Not me.’ So says Orson Welles in hard-boiled voiceover of femme fatale Hayworth. Columbia slashed over 65 minutes from Welles’ rough-cut, but it proved box-office poison. But the now celebrated noir-thriller has deep-focus cinematography, serious smouldering from paradoxically newly ice-blonde Hayworth and a dazzlingly surreal funhouse/hall of mirrors finale echoed in Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway.

    Pal Joey
USA 1957. Dir George Sidney. With Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak. 112min. PG
‘I’ll sing to him, each Spring to him, and worship the trousers that cling to him’ was one of many Rodgers & Hart lyrics deemed too scandalous for Hollywood’s version of their Broadway hit musical. But gains included Sinatra swinging through ‘The Lady is a Tramp’ for the delectation of Hayworth encased in orange fur. Now the classy older woman, she competes with Novak for Sinatra’s, er, favours.

    Separate Tables
USA 1958. Dir Delbert Mann. With Deborah Kerr, David Niven, Burt Lancaster. 100min. PG
Replacing Vivien Leigh when her director husband Laurence Olivier quit the project, Hayworth scores highly as the fading ex-wife of Burt Lancaster (who produced the film), whose unexpected arrival at an unobtrusive hotel unsettles a series of pained relationships. Terence Rattigan’s sensitive play survives surprisingly intact thanks to (almost) uniformly well-pitched performances, especially Hayworth and Oscar-winners David Niven and Wendy Hiller.
