Fox Is Feeling P-E-T-T-Y: Developing New Singing Competition to Hit Airwaves BEFORE Idol Relaunch

  • Variety has learned this morning that Fox is fast tracking the development process of a new singing competition.

  • This comes off the heels that ABC is relaunching Fox's former golden child American Idol in the Spring of 2018.

  • Fox expressed great frustration and anger over the move, as they had still been in talks with Fremantle, Idol's production company, about bringing the show back 2-3 years down the road and felt ABC launching the show with essentially only one year off the year, was a stab in the back.

  • This new singing show is from Isaraeli distributor Armoza Formats.

  • The Armoza project is a variation on classic shiny-floor singing competitions, one in which the show’s four finalists are selected in the premiere episode. New contestants then challenge the finalists each week to steal one of the four slots. The winner is named in the season finale.

  • No launch date is set but Fox is fast tracking this for a Winter-start, to beat Idol and ABC to the punch.

Bill and Ted's 3 is in the works

I went to a showing of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey last night at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, and between the movies there was a panel with a bunch of the cast and producer Scott Kroopf.

Alex Winter (Bill) said that they are working on a third film, although it sounds like it's been tough getting it actually started. The premise is that Bill and Ted have fucked up and Wyld Stallyns are not a famous, influential band. The powers that be in the future come back and they have 10 hours to make an amazing song or it will never happen.





  • The studio wanted a younger Rufus, so Scott Kroopf talked to Charlie Sheen about the part. Even he knew that wasn't a good idea (the role was played by George Carlin).
  • Alex and Keanu went on repeated auditions for the parts over months. Amy Stoch (Missy) had to audition six times.
  • Diane Franklin went in to audition for Joan of Arc because she had just done a French accent for Better Off Dead, then was asked to read for the role of Princess Joanna.
  • It came close to never being released due to studio financial issues, and they were spooked by the release of Back to the Future. Alex said he and Keanu joked before filming the first scene with Socrates that nobody would ever see it. It was almost released directly to HBO. Scott convinced the studio to test it and audiences loved it.
  • Keanu was supposed to be a surprise guest on the panel but canceled two hours before because he was sick. However there was a young guy in the audience who cos-played Ted who looked and sounded great!
  • Other than a few establishing shots, nothing was filmed in California. It was shot in Phoenix and Rome.

    Documentary About Black LGBT Gang Available On Louis CK's Website For $5.00

    -“Check It” is directed by Toby Oppenheimer and Dana Flor, who followed the gang members for four years as they dealt with harassment, poverty, and violence.

    -Steve Buscemi was executive producer and encouraged Louis to watch the film at the Tribeca Film Festival where it made an impact on the comedian:

    "It’s about a gay black street gang in DC (the only one documented in the country) made up of kids who were living on the streets and easy targets for violence and harassment,” he explained. “They started this gang to protect each other. They made a family where they didn’t have one.”
    He also admitted that the film is not easy to watch: “It takes on life right where the rubber hits the road. What made me love it was just the kids themselves. They are like any kids, like anyone’s children. They are trying to cope against terrible odds, they are funny and full of hope and life. Their lives are difficult and complex. They are very generous in sharing this with the filmmakers and you, if you watch the film.”
