First Reviews of "Witness:" Mixed to Strong, Not Very Political, All Over The Place

The first reviews for Witness are trickling in, and initial responses are mixed to strong. Reviwers say that the album has a darker mood than the previous albums. There are a few tracks that focus on "purposeful pop," while the others are about breakups, intimacy, and the digital age.

USA Today:

"Despite everything its lead singles and marketing campaign led listeners to expect, Witness is neither Perry's political manifesto, nor an album of embarrassing hip hop appropriation. The album Perry actually released is sonically coherent and entirely uncontroversial, its decent songwriting mostly focused on her wounded heart. Arguably, it's one of her most personal records to date, and yet the marketing focused on everything but."

SOURCE

LA Times:

"Now comes the full album, titled “Witness,” and it’s more jumbled still, with would-be self-empowerment anthems next to earnest ballads lamenting the end of a relationship."

"Witnesscontains strong moments beyond “Chained to the Rhythm,” which still feels like the beginning of an intriguing project... [but] Witness, whose singles keep stalling out like Trump’s travel ban, diagnoses only Perry’s desperation for a hit."

SOURCE

Mashable:

"Feeling like the world is slipping out of your fingers is ripe for material, but more of than than not, it comes off as robotic. She's chained to her own rhythm."

"Teenage Dream's monster success followed by "Part of Me" set her up to ground her cotton candy cloud persona, but finding her footing since then has been a challenge. Prism was a decent effort that didn't quite have the same luster, but Witness feels more like a spiral."

"There are bright spots on Witness, though."

Nielsen found that The Walking Dead was by far the most talked-about television series on social media over the 2016-17 season, garnering more than twice as many mentions as the second-most talked-about series, Empire.

Nielsen also analyzed the influence of series' talent and network accounts on social media buzz for their shows, and found that 17-year-old Walking Dead actor Chandler Riggs (Carl) drove 15 percent of social media content during the TWD season finale, more than any other talent, program or network account for the show.

They also found that the Grammy Awards were the most talked-about TV special this year, and the Super Bowl was the most talked-about sports program.

Henry Cavill Takes a Load Off on Justice League Set to Commemorate Superman's 79th Anniversary

Super dude Henry Cavill kicked up his Kryptonian boots up while filming reshoots for the upcoming Justice League movie. The big, blue, boy scout took the opportunity to get real deep about his character, and celebrate Superman's 79th anniversary in Action Comics.

Cavill writes on Instagram: "Hi Everyone! I've been doing some Super Ruminations because this month is the 79th anniversary of Superman in Action Comics and thought it fitting to pass on this little fact. Who knew eh?? In January 1933, Jerry Siegel wrote a short story titled "The Reign of the Superman", which was illustrated by his friend Joe Shuster and self-published in a science fiction magazine. It told the story of a bald villain with telepathic powers. Trying to create a character they could sell to newspaper syndicates, Siegel re-conceived the "superman" character as a powerful hero, sent to our world from a more advanced society. He and Shuster developed the idea into a comic strip, which they pitched unsuccessfully."

The One Problem With Wonder Woman (And All Superhero Flicks)

Wonder Woman’s bisexuality is essential to her superhero identity. Not that Wonder Woman must be in a relationship with a woman but that it is important to say she isn’t leaving her home because it would be impossible for her to find love otherwise. Her relationship with a man should be a wonderful side effect of her true reason for leaving — to make the world a better place.

While Gadot has a one-off joke that “men aren’t necessary for pleasure,” the movie quickly consummates the two leads’ love with no mention of any prior relationships for Wonder Woman.

Instead of focusing on a healthy relationship between two bisexual characters, 2016’s Suicide Squad film chose instead to focus on the “straighter” relationship between Harley and the Joker.

Honestly, it’s truly horrifying that Hollywood would rather try to sell an abusive “straight” relationship as romantic over showing a bisexual woman in a healthy same-sex relationship. The nuance of Harley’s character as a trauma survivor, discussed through a bisexual lens, is completely lost on-screen as a result.
