'Fear the Walking Dead' Showrunner on That Shocking Death

Fear the Walking Dead showrunner Dave Erickson spoke out about the shocking death on Sunday night's third season premiere.

Lead character Travis, played by Cliff Curtis, was shot by a mysterious sniper while fleeing a racist military compound in a helicopter, minutes after being rescued by Madison and Alicia. He then let himself fall from the chopper as a horrified Alicia watched.

“I think what was important from the perspective of the audience as well as for the characters, it was something worse again in the fact that we thought we’ve achieved some level of safety. We thought we were going to be okay, and then out of nowhere in the random violence of the apocalypse, suddenly Travis is taken from us. And in his last action, he realizes how bad his wound is before Alicia does and he knows that life is seeping out of him and it’s only a matter of time before he dies, and he doesn’t want her to be responsible for putting him down,” Erickson said.

  • Sam Claflin (30), from The Hunger Games series and Me Before You, shares his experience with body shaming behind the scenes of one movie: “I remember doing one job when they literally made me pull my shirt up and were grabbing my fat and going ‘you need to lose a bit of weight.’"

  • On whether or not women or men have it worse when it comes to body shaming: "Men have it just as bad. Well, not just as bad but they get it bad and it’s never talked about." He recounted further: "I’m not saying it’s anywhere near as bad as what women go through but I, as an actor approaching each job, am insecure — especially when I have to take my top off in it — and so nervous. I get really worked up to the point where I spend hours and hours in the gym and not eating for weeks to achieve what I think they’re going for.”

  • He believes actors nowadays are held to a different standard when it comes to how their bodies look: "There’s a filter on society that this is normal, but actually it’s anything but normal.”

   - Piers Morgan criticized Ari for flying home to Florida after her concert was bombed
   - He's now apologizing after she went back to Manchester and visited wounded children in the hospital and then gave an amazing concert one day after the London Bridge attack
    - "I watched the concert last night and it was a staggeringly moving and inspiring event. And at the centre of it all was you, Ariana Grande"
    - "By coming back to Manchester so soon, shrugging off the latest attack in London, standing on that stage and performing with such raw emotion and power, you showed more guts, resilience, strength of character and ‘Blitz spirit’ than every snivelling, pathetic ISIS coward put together. And you certainly showed a damn sight more compassion than I ever showed you."
    - Ms Grande, I’d have you in the trenches next to me any time. I’m sorry I questioned your courage. You’re one helluva gutsy young lady.

11 Books That Are A Million Times Better Than The Movie

'The Golden Compass' by Philip Pullman

'The Golden Compass' by Philip Pullman

About: Here lives an orphaned ward named Lyra Belacqua, whose carefree life among the scholars at Oxford's Jordan College is shattered by the arrival of two powerful visitors. First, her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, appears with evidence of mystery and danger in the far North, including photographs of a mysterious celestial phenomenon called Dust and the dim outline of a city suspended in the Aurora Borealis that he suspects is part of an alternate universe. He leaves Lyra in the care of Mrs. Coulter, an enigmatic scholar and explorer who offers to give Lyra the attention her uncle has long refused her. In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the alethiometer. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. And somehow, both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are involved.

'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell

'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchel

About: Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history.

But the story doesn’t end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky.

As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

'The Giver' by Lois Lowry

'The Giver' by Lois Lowry

About: This haunting story centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he's given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.

'Dune' by Frank Herbert

'Dune' by Frank Herbert

About: Set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary dynasties are controlled by noble houses that owe an allegiance to the imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides (the heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and heir of House Atreides) as he and his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the 'spice' melange, the most important and valuable substance in the cosmos. The story explores the complex, multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion as the forces of the empire confront each other for control of Arrakis.

Published in 1965, it won the Hugo Award in 1966 and the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel. Dune is frequently cited as the world's best-selling sf novel.

'Ella Enchanted' by Gail Carson Levine

'Ella Enchanted' by Gail Carson Levine

About: At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent young fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem to be in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery as she tries to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you'll ever read.

Gail Carson Levine's examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales takes some satisfying twists and deviations from the original. Ella is bound by obedience against her will, and takes matters in her own hands with ambition and verve. Her relationship with the prince is balanced and based on humor and mutual respect; in fact, it is she who ultimately rescues him. Ella Enchanted has won many well-deserved awards, including a Newbery Honor.

Mayim Bialik advocates against open relationships; says women aren't biologically wired for them

Mayim Bialik has uploaded a new YouTube video laying out why she doesn't "get" open relationships.

-"The notion of men spreading their seed is kind of an over-simplified and misogynistic take on our species, and with open relationships, women too can spread their seed. It's liberating for women to be seen as equal sexual participants, rather than the object of men's whims. I get that, too. Here's what I don't get about open relationships, though: people in open relationships are exchanging one cultural construct for another — that of equating male and female sexuality. But as a scientist, I'm here to ruin everybody's good time and to tell you that the assumption that male and female sexuality can be treated pretty much the same is in direct opposition to our biology."

-She goes on to regurgitate the brand new, never-before-heard argument that since men produce a lot of sperm and women only produce one egg per menstrual cycle, men are naturally inclined to have sex with a lot of women while women are inclined to look for one mate.

-"Take home message: Lean in to your biology."

-Says that people in open relationships are more prone to getting STDs, because "people aren't protecting themselves."

-Says open relationships are too hard to maintain because she can barely maintain a monogamous relationship.

Why we need more women like Gemma and Abbie from The Keepers

-The Keepers is a mini-series about the murder of Sister Cathy, whose body was found in the woodlands two months after she disappeared while shopping in Baltimore, in early 1970.

-Sister Cathy was the English teacher of Abbie Schaub and Gemma Hoskins and they take it upon themselves to investigate the cold case and also the murder of Joyce Malecki, who was murdered around the same time in the Baltimore area. "The police ain’t gonna solve this crime? We’ll take it from here, boys; we have Microsoft Word and a library card," they said.

-They started a Facebook group called "The Keepers Official Group - Justice for Catherine Cesnik and Joyce Malecki" in hopes of gathering clues and connecting with other amateur sleuths who are hoping to solve both cases.

-During the investigation they uncovered that Kathy knew about sexual abuse ongoing at the school where she worked and proceed to investigate if and how that may have played into her murder.
