Butthurt Men File Official Complaints Against Alamo Drafthouse for Women Only Wonder Woman Screening

$

There have been plenty of unofficial butthurt complaints registered against the Alamo Drafthouse chain via twitter, but now it's official: Seven official complaints have been filed against the theater in Austin. One of them was filed by Stephen Clark, a gay lawyer who doesn't even live in Texas. A civil rights complaint was also filed by a former grassroots coordinator for Tr**p's campaign.

The complaints may have some merit because Austin city codes do forbid public accommodations from limiting services based on gender, sex, race, sexual orientation, etc. It even bans advertising any services limited to a certain group. However, city code doesn't indicate how establishments should be punished if they violate the code. So the city may try to deal w/ the matter informally OR they may pass off the matter to a city attorney for prosecution.

That being said, Clark felt compelled to take action largely because of the Alamo Drafthouse's "snarky" responses on social media. When asked if they ever hosted a men only screening, they responded: "we *did* show the Entourage movie a few years ago." Clark didn't like this one bit: "Their attitude was really off-putting to me … the suggestion that anybody who pointed out to them that this was illegal was misogynistic or insecure."

He must be fun at parties.

'The Golden Compass' by Philip Pullman

'The Golden Compass' by Philip Pullman

About: Here lives an orphaned ward named Lyra Belacqua, whose carefree life among the scholars at Oxford's Jordan College is shattered by the arrival of two powerful visitors. First, her fearsome uncle, Lord Asriel, appears with evidence of mystery and danger in the far North, including photographs of a mysterious celestial phenomenon called Dust and the dim outline of a city suspended in the Aurora Borealis that he suspects is part of an alternate universe. He leaves Lyra in the care of Mrs. Coulter, an enigmatic scholar and explorer who offers to give Lyra the attention her uncle has long refused her. In this multilayered narrative, however, nothing is as it seems. Lyra sets out for the top of the world in search of her kidnapped playmate, Roger, bearing a rare truth-telling instrument, the alethiometer. All around her children are disappearing—victims of so-called "Gobblers"—and being used as subjects in terrible experiments that separate humans from their daemons, creatures that reflect each person's inner being. And somehow, both Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter are involved.

'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell

'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchel

About: Cloud Atlas begins in 1850 with Adam Ewing, an American notary voyaging from the Chatham Isles to his home in California. Along the way, Ewing is befriended by a physician, Dr. Goose, who begins to treat him for a rare species of brain parasite. . . . Abruptly, the action jumps to Belgium in 1931, where Robert Frobisher, a disinherited bisexual composer, contrives his way into the household of an infirm maestro who has a beguiling wife and a nubile daughter. . . . From there we jump to the West Coast in the 1970s and a troubled reporter named Luisa Rey, who stumbles upon a web of corporate greed and murder that threatens to claim her life. . . . And onward, with dazzling virtuosity, to an inglorious present-day England; to a Korean superstate of the near future where neocapitalism has run amok; and, finally, to a postapocalyptic Iron Age Hawaii in the last days of history.

But the story doesn’t end even there. The narrative then boomerangs back through centuries and space, returning by the same route, in reverse, to its starting point. Along the way, Mitchell reveals how his disparate characters connect, how their fates intertwine, and how their souls drift across time like clouds across the sky.

As wild as a videogame, as mysterious as a Zen koan, Cloud Atlas is an unforgettable tour de force that, like its incomparable author, has transcended its cult classic status to become a worldwide phenomenon.

'The Giver' by Lois Lowry

'The Giver' by Lois Lowry

About: This haunting story centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he's given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community.

'Dune' by Frank Herbert

'Dune' by Frank Herbert

About: Set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary dynasties are controlled by noble houses that owe an allegiance to the imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides (the heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and heir of House Atreides) as he and his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the 'spice' melange, the most important and valuable substance in the cosmos. The story explores the complex, multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion as the forces of the empire confront each other for control of Arrakis.

Published in 1965, it won the Hugo Award in 1966 and the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel. Dune is frequently cited as the world's best-selling sf novel.

'Ella Enchanted' by Gail Carson Levine

'Ella Enchanted' by Gail Carson Levine

About: At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent young fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem to be in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery as she tries to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you'll ever read.

Gail Carson Levine's examination of traditional female roles in fairy tales takes some satisfying twists and deviations from the original. Ella is bound by obedience against her will, and takes matters in her own hands with ambition and verve. Her relationship with the prince is balanced and based on humor and mutual respect; in fact, it is she who ultimately rescues him. Ella Enchanted has won many well-deserved awards, including a Newbery Honor.

Mayim Bialik advocates against open relationships; says women aren't biologically wired for them

Mayim Bialik has uploaded a new YouTube video laying out why she doesn't "get" open relationships.

-"The notion of men spreading their seed is kind of an over-simplified and misogynistic take on our species, and with open relationships, women too can spread their seed. It's liberating for women to be seen as equal sexual participants, rather than the object of men's whims. I get that, too. Here's what I don't get about open relationships, though: people in open relationships are exchanging one cultural construct for another — that of equating male and female sexuality. But as a scientist, I'm here to ruin everybody's good time and to tell you that the assumption that male and female sexuality can be treated pretty much the same is in direct opposition to our biology."

-She goes on to regurgitate the brand new, never-before-heard argument that since men produce a lot of sperm and women only produce one egg per menstrual cycle, men are naturally inclined to have sex with a lot of women while women are inclined to look for one mate.

-"Take home message: Lean in to your biology."

-Says that people in open relationships are more prone to getting STDs, because "people aren't protecting themselves."

-Says open relationships are too hard to maintain because she can barely maintain a monogamous relationship.

Why we need more women like Gemma and Abbie from The Keepers

$

-The Keepers is a mini-series about the murder of Sister Cathy, whose body was found in the woodlands two months after she disappeared while shopping in Baltimore, in early 1970.

-Sister Cathy was the English teacher of Abbie Schaub and Gemma Hoskins and they take it upon themselves to investigate the cold case and also the murder of Joyce Malecki, who was murdered around the same time in the Baltimore area. "The police ain’t gonna solve this crime? We’ll take it from here, boys; we have Microsoft Word and a library card," they said.

-They started a Facebook group called "The Keepers Official Group - Justice for Catherine Cesnik and Joyce Malecki" in hopes of gathering clues and connecting with other amateur sleuths who are hoping to solve both cases.

-During the investigation they uncovered that Kathy knew about sexual abuse ongoing at the school where she worked and proceed to investigate if and how that may have played into her murder.

Zefron and the Baywatch crew celebrated the international release of their summer blockbuster by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest inflatable beach ball. The beach bae's beach ball measured nearly 66 feet in diameter and was inflated on a boat in the River Thames ahead of the London premiere, a few days before last night's devastating terrorist attacks.

The previous record was for a ball 51 feet and 10 inches in diameter.

Baywatch starring Priyanka Chopra, Dwayne Johnson, and Zachary David Alexander Efron is now in theaters world wide.

STARZ - AMERICAN GODS 1x07 Promo "A Prayer for Mad Sweeney" + Ep 5 Breakdown & More

Following her brief reunion with Shadow, Laura turns to an unlikely travel companion to find her way back to life; Mad Sweeney's long, winding, and often-tragic past is explored.

New Gods, Crispin Glover (Mr. World) and Bruce Langley (Technical Boy) join Marc Snetiker and Orlando Jones to discuss Episode 5, "Lemon Scented You".

- On whether the New Gods are "bad" : Bruce - "Well I think it's important to bear in mind, that in this entire universe and world, no one is intrinsically bad. All of the Gods have their own reasons for doing what they're doing and more importantly, all aspects of all of the gods are simple reflections of us, as a human species and society."
- Crispin has worked with Gaiman previously on Beowulf
- There was plans for an origin story for Technical Boy that was cut, but Bruce hopes that there'll be a chance to explore that later in the series
- On TB's costuming/look : "I won, with costume. Every single scene I got a new one. So new hair, new costume, everything.""It's indicative of his nature, of the character, he updates as quickly as social trends, as quickly as apps."
- Orlando points out how interesting it is that the New Gods aren't necessarily on the same page in regards to this battle, while the losing side, the Old Gods, are in agreement seeing the New Gods as enemies
- In regards to the different approaches each New God has taken in this war, as well as the different stakes each of them have in what's to come, Crispin says of Mr. World's perspective that "I feel like I'm needing to work with everybody. I'm trying to genuinely have a good situation happen. Every person, every character gets to that in a different way. I feel like that's what I'm after."
- Bruce speaks of TB's and Media's dynamic : "Well first of all, she has the gall to use his own technology against him. So that's a giant middle-finger right there.""So in the incompatible triad of World, Tech Boy, and Media, there's a strange sort of power struggle going on there. And Tech Boy very much likes to operate on his own agenda and he's got his own reasons doing what he's doing. With that said, he also has, for lack of a better term, very human relationships with the other Gods he's interact with."
- The interrogation room scene was the first scene Crispin read and that's what made him decide to be a part of this.

A good look into the process of bringing that animated opening to life.

It was just the core four as they answered questions from the moderator and audience. The following is a paraphrase of their answers. No real scoops since the writers are still writing

-KJ would like to see Sabrina on the show, whereas Camila and Lili seem to think the cast is big enough. Cole thinks its nice that recurring characters (like Kevin) are getting more screentime/focus this next season

-Next season, Veronica will have tension with her dad, and the show will also play with the classic "Hiram hates Archie" dynamic

-Lili doesn’t use the comics for her portrayal of Betty because she doesn't like how much of a doormat she is. Cole on the other hand would like Jughead to be more removed from the group and weirder like he sometimes is in the comics. He compared Jughead to L from Death Note. He also thinks Jughead is most like a dog because of how whipped he is.

-When asked what other character they would want to play, Lili said female Jughead, Camila said Betty, Cole said Reggie, and KJ said Kevin.

-When asked about kissing Cole: “FAANNtastic but I liked kissing Cami better, what?” When asked about shipping, Cole comments on how shippers want the actors to weigh in on ships to fuel their online wars, but he's never going to give a serious answer about what he ships on the show.

-Cole insists that the "I'm a werido" meme doesn't bother him

And here's a random fan picture so you can see what they wore if you care about that

And also, a week ago Madchen posted a behind the scenes of some of the cast filming promos for season two. Unfortunately, they're just walking through dramatic mist rather than wading through real water, but I'm sure the CW will slap some neon colors or do something overly dramatic in post.
