Did Harry Styles plagiarize Blackbird by the Beatles?

$

0

Accused of plagiarism again, the former 1D member came under fire from Beatles fans who have accused the singer of using a similar guitar riff on his song Sweet Creature that sounds exactly like the Beatles' 1968 song Blackbird.

Beatles fans attacked saying that the song sounds like someone incorrectly playing blackbird on the guitar, that they think Sir Paul should sue, and that being in One Direction made him too overly confident and think he could rip off other artist like his former band did.

This isn't the first time Harry Styles has been accused of plagiarism, the latest accusations come a week after his track Ever Since New York came under fire from fans of Badfinger who accused Styles of using a similar guitar riff to the one on the band’s 1971 track Baby Blue. Prior to that accusation Harry Styles and the band were also accused of copying Taylor Swift's style literally by having a similar sounding chord progression to her single Style on their track Perfect.

Original: 5 Flop Pop Albums That Deserved Way More Love

In a follow up to my previous post, 5 Flop Albums From Big Name Acts, I now present 5 Flop albums that should not have flopped:

1. Mariah Carey - Glitter (2001)

-Glitter is the ill-fated and often mocked soundtrack to Carey's 2001 film of the same name (the soundtrack was released September 11, 2001).
-Glitter was a disco-influenced album (something everyone now wants from Gaga).
-While it is not Mariah's worst performing album, it was considered such a critical and commercial failure at the time that it led to her being dropped from Virgin Records.
-The infamous TRL incident, the appearance of strange messages on her website, and subsequent hospitalization also preceded the release of Glitter.
-"Loverboy", the album's first single, was to feature a sample by the Yellow Magic Orchestra, which J.Lo eventually ended up using on her track "I'm Real". Despite the fact that Carey had licensed usage for the sample first, J.Lo's album was released earlier, forcing Mariah to change "Loverboy" last minute.

Why it deserved better:
-The album is far from flawless and certainly has some tracks that need to be skipped ("If We" is a mess of a track and the vocals on "Want You" are not her best). However, the ballads are beautiful and the throwback disco sound works well in tracks like "All My Life", "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On", and "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life".

2. Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion (2015)

-One of ONTD's fave flop albums (buy Emotions on iTunes!), Carly Rae's follow up to her breakout smash hit "Call Me Maybe" was a critical success but a commercial flop (outside of Japan, where it went Gold).
-In it's first week it sold a little over 16 000 copies in the states and just 2 600 in Canada (because Canadians are apathetic af).

Why it deserved better:
Because it's a great pop record with very little filler (I only ever skip "LA Hallucinations").

Kelly Rowland - Talk A Good Game (2013)

-While the album made it into the top 10, it has gone on to sell about 215 000 copies worldwide (Rowland's lowest performing solo album) and nobody talks about it anymore.

Why it deserved better:
-If you listen to the album today, it holds up well. It's cohesive, melodic, and honest. Rowland addresses personal issues like domestic violence and her jealousy towards Beyonce on the emotionally raw track "Dirty Laundry". The entire album is filled with pop bops and smooth R&B jams. Do yourself a favour and revisit it.

4. Christina Aguilera - Bionic (2010)

-Christina released 2 back to back flops - 2010's Bionic and 2012's Lotus - and while Lotus sounds dated today, Bionic not only holds up well, but it might have been ahead of its time.
-Bionic had critics divided (making both worst-of and best-of year end lists) and commercially it failed to live up to expectations.

Why it deserved better:
-Aguilera embraces female empowerment and celebrates sexual desire throughout the album (like on tracks "Prima Donna", "Sex For Breakfast", and "Woohoo").
-Her vocals are great (with very little of the over-singing she's famously mocked for).
-The album is cohesive yet diverse sonically and is still listenable 7 years after it's release.
-"Birds of Prey" is a smooth and haunting track that is undeservedly overlooked (and features a great subtle vocal performance from Aguilera).

Britney Spears - Glory (2016)

-The album did well critically and is not her worst performing album, however it failed to really make an impact with none of the singles breaking into the top 10 ("Slumber Party" debuted at number 86).

Why it deserved better:
-Glory is fun, catchy, fits in with the music trends of 2016, and features much better vocals and production than her previous album, Britney Jean. It's a major step in the right direction for Spears.

Nick Spencer talked about today's Free Comic Book Day issue of Secret Empire.

The last page shows Captain America, the leader of HYDRA, standing over the bodies of Marvel's fallen heroes and lifting Thor's hammer Mjolnir.

"It's a big, scary moment for the Marvel Universe. We wanted an iconic image that would signify to the audience and to everybody in the Marvel Universe that the fight was sort of over before it began."

On why Cap would be able to lift the hammer after his villainous turn to HYDRA, Spencer says "It certainly is a plot point we're going to keep coming back to and revisiting and talking about. We're going to talk a little about what the meaning of 'worthiness' is." Spencer also said that he's working closely with Thor writer Jason Aaron on how Thor and Asgard will connect to the book.

ONTD Original: Beauties Who Upgraded Their Eyebrows!

$
0
0

Eyebrow trends have been collaborating with makeup trends for years, and in this digital age, Instagram is rapidly taking over magazines' places as the world's leading communicator of styles to consumers. To some, trends are fun ways to dip your toes into the attitudes of fashion. To others, they're nothing more than fads run by dollar-vampire companies whom collected advice from the CSR.

But whether you love them or hate them, fashion trends have always made their marks in history, rendering them fascinating visuals which dress up each era.

From the Victorian era to the flapper girl; the flapper girl to Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn; and more of Old Hollywood to 2002 Christina 'Xtina' Aguilera... it goes without saying that eyebrows are a massive part of these trends throughout the times.

Let's take a look~

Christina Aguilera

Ah, yes. Our grand opening. Christina Aguilera's thin brows are so iconic, they can be considered their own version of thin:

[at the beauty salon]: "I want my brows thin! But... not Xtina thin."

Xtina has always kept her naturally light blonde brows small, but she's let them blossom just a tad more in recent years (with all of that plucking, 'a tad more' may be the best they can do). She's found to often thicken them with a good brow pencil - a tool she doesn't lack experience with, as evident in the left photo.

Beyoncé

Like many others coming up on this list, Yoncé was a victim of the noughties invisible brow trends. Luckily, Queen B didn't go overboard and kept up a good shape. Some may argue that the brows actually suited her more before.

Either way, she manged to bust out some amazing furry brows that can be seen as more welcoming on her soft features.

Jessica Alba

If you were born before 1995, you may feel that Jessica Alba is a name synonymous to 'sex symbol'. Agree or disagree, it was shoved down your throat either way.

Jessica was, without a doubt, a beautiful girl, and has grown into an even more beautiful business woman with her own empire who manages to be a badass without the 'Dark Angel' action scenes. Like her brows, she just keeps getting better; they went from washing out her features to being the bow that neatly keeps together everything underneath.

Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad has a safe, photogenic face that can be treated like a blank canvas; you can paint any picture you want (be it makeup or eyebrow thickness) and it'll make a drastic change that manages to somehow be just subtle enough to make you tilt your head to the side.

Lauren went from looking like a guest star in The O.C. during the early 2000s to a woman whose confidence is as full as her glorious brows~

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett has steered clear of being an ONTD favourite, even amongst the lovely Marvel stans, but she is still wildly considered a sex symbol outside of our favourite purple sanctuary, so here we are.

We have yet another example of what the thin brows preyed on, but the consistency of their thickness and decent shape probably could have gotten away with staying put. Scarlett's current brows have grown slightly (both in height and length) since the before photo, and appear to lean more on the timeless side of today's current brow trends.

Miley Cyrus

Smiley Miley is probably the current queen of transition, but her brows have more or less stayed consistent. Their thickness levels have upped a few notches since her teen years, but their straight form has always remained.

Nevertheless, they clean her up well!

Mila Kunis

Like Hannah Montana's ghost above, Mila Kunis got into showbiz at a very young age, being just 14 years old when she started on 'That 70s Show'. So her eyebrow mistakes, though quite minor, are pretty forgivable with this fact.

Along with skinny line hairs for brows, the arch was another trend brought back at around the same time, and many people tried to rock them both. Mila was seemingly one of those people, but being in the business of beauty and trendsetters has taught her a lot in terms of brow care, and it definitely shows.

Olivia Wilde

Speaking of the arch... here we have its Sovereign. Olivia Wilde has one of the wildest (omg) examples of what that trend is. Olivia has piercing eyes and a bone structure that could cut a tree, so such a harsh brow actually enhances her strong features.

She has toned them down through a bit of paint and some growth, but the arch ain't goin' nowhere, which isn't a complaint.

Kaley Cuoco

One of the better upgrades on this list, Kaley Cuoco once embodied one of the worst brow trends... the sperm brow, which gets its name from its shape. Calling it a 'trend' is arguable, as it often originated from a longingly-unknown mistake made by the inexperienced.

Her current eyebrows are nothing outstanding, necessarily; they merely seem to have drifted away from the trends and settled into a state unique to Kaley. They suit her well, they are lasting, and they serve as the eyebrow version of a 'sigh of relief' when comparing them to their past. Four for you, Kaley Cuoco!

emmyrossum: If you have a single parent, read this.
If you've been through sexual assault, health scares, grief and loss, hate and violence, job loss or really anything and want to find resilience, read this. Just take two minutes and read this.
Sunday night, Sam and I were fortunate enough to get tickets to see my friend Katie Couric interview the inimitable Sheryl Sandberg and psychologist Adam Grant about their newest book OPTION B. The book is about how Sheryl handled the tragedy of her husband Dave suddenly passing away. It left her a single mother of two young children, with a huge hole in their life and their hearts. She talked about how she pulled herself together, how she's still pulling herself together. She leaned on the advice of many psychologists and friends to help her through. She learned other peoples’ stories of loss and confusion and anger and suffering and laughter and resilience. This morning as I woke up thinking a lot about the talk and how it affected me personally. I've decided to share my story on Facebook, see LINK IN BIO to my profile.
