    20 (5) BEST ANIME MOVIES
    NOT MADE BY STUDIO GHIBLI

    #20 Perfect Blue (1997)
    PERFECT BLUE TRAILER

    • Mima is a retired pop singer turned actress, whose perception of reality starts to slip as she is haunted from reflections of her past while being stalked by an obsessed fan.

    • Perfect Blue is the first film directed by Satoshi Kon, who is also well-known for directing Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent and Paprika.

    • Director Darren Aronofsky purchased the rights to the movie with the idea to produce a live-action remake. Although that project never got off the ground, Aronofsky did lift a bathtub scene from Kon’s movie wholesale for his next film, Requiem for a Dream (2000).

    #13 Barefoot Gen (1983)
    BAREFOOT GEN TRAILER

    • Adapted from Keiji Nakazawa's manga series, the story is loosely based on Nakazawa's own experiences as a WWII Hiroshima survivor. The story takes place in Hiroshima in 1945, which revolves around Gen a young schoolboy who is forced to help his family scrape by through those tough and terrible times.

    • Barefoot Gen offers a glimpse into the domestic lives of Japan's population during WWII, similar to Studio Ghibli's Grave of The Fireflies (1988). "While Ghibli's Grave of Fireflies is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, Barefoot Gen is brutal and shocking, a powerful piece of history that must not be forgotten."

    • In 2013, the Barefoot Gen manga was removed from primary school libraries in Matsue, Japan as there were "some doubts as to whether some of the content is suitable for a child in a developmental stage".

    #11 Ninja Scroll (1993)
    NINJA SCROLL TRAILER

    • Ninja Scroll, a Studio Madhouse production, was written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Set in feudal Japan, the story follows Jubei a wandering ninja with a horrible past, who ends ups making enemies with a group of demonic humans after saving Kagero. a young ninja woman.

    • "Ninja Scroll borrows the best tropes from films like 'Lady Snowblood' and 'Lone Wolf and Cub'. But thanks to animation's creative potential, these tropes are taken a step beyond."

    • In October 2008, there were reports of Warner Bros. developing a live-action remake of the anime film with production companies Appian Way, Madhouse Productions and Jungo Maruta being involved in the development. Leonardo DiCaprio was reported to be a producer and was considering casting the Japanese boy band SMAP as the main leads for Ninja Scroll. Later in November, DiCaprio told MTV's Splash Page that he is producing both the live action adaptation of Ninja Scroll and Akira, but emphasized that he has no real interest in acting in them.

    #5 Your Name (2016)
    YOUR NAME TRAILER

    • Released in 2016 and directed by Makoto Shinkai of 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words fame, Your Name (aka Kimi no Na wa) is currectly the the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan – domestic or imported – behind Spirited Away, Titanic and Frozen and the second-biggest domestic film ever, behind the Oscar-winning Spirited Away. Your Name topped the box office in Japan for a record-breaking of 12 non-consecutive weekends and is the second highest-grossing anime film in history, with a gross of over US$288 million as of December 20, 2016.

    • The plot of Your Name revolves around Mitsuha and Taki, who are both high school students. Mitsuha yearns and wishes to live as a boy in Tokyo in her next life as she is fed up of her present life in the countryside. One day, Mitsuha wakes up to discover herself living her dream life in Tokyo but in Taki's body, while Taki himself has somehow ended up in Mitsuha's body. To pursue for an answer to this strange phenomenon, they begin to search for one another.

    #1 Tokyo Godfathers (2003)
    TOKYO GODFATHERS TRAILER

    • "Unlike other anime movies that exploit "Cool Japan" tropes, Tokyo Godfathers delves into things Japanese society likes to cover up. From the homeless to immigrants, Tokyo Godfathers humanizes the dehumanized, creating great empathy for the ignored and abandoned."

    • Tokyo Godfathers, which is also directed by Satoshi Kon, tells the story of three homeless people; Gin, an alcoholic and middle-aged hobo; Hana, a transgender woman and former drag queen; Miyuki, a runaway teenage girl, and the baby girl they find one Christmas Eve. The three take it upon themselves to return the baby to her parents, all while slowly coming to confront past and present regrets.

    • Tokyo Godfathers is loosely based on Peter B. Kyne's novel Three Godfathers (1913)

    Here's the low-down:

  • Fierce Reads, YA home of Macmillan Children's Publishing Group (one of the Big 5 in publishing), is currently promoting a novel that takes place in Nazi Germany called Max, by French writer Sarah Cohen-Scali. ARCs (advance review copies) are currently being given away on Goodreads.
  • The novel has been earning a lot of 4 and 5-star reviews on Goodreads already.
  • The book and its cover depicting a fetus wearing a swastika are currently attracting a lot of controversy on Twitter, for obvious reasons. Many YA authors and fans are already upset.

    Synopsis from Goodreads:

"Nazi Germany. 1936. The Lebensborn program is going strong as German women are carefully selected by the Nazis and recruited to give birth to new representatives of the Aryan race. Inside one of these women is Max, a fetus waiting to be born and fulfill his destiny as the perfect Aryan.

Max is taken away from his birth mother as soon as he enters the world. He will be raised under the leadership and ideologies of the Nazi Party. As he grows up without a mom, without any affection or tenderness, according to Nazi educational precepts, he soon becomes the mascot of the program. But things don't go according to plan."

The book will be in stores in March 2017.

  • 01/08/17--18:00: New Justice League Picture

  • It's from USA Today.

Plus Geoff Johns mentioned that Amber Heard's Mera will have a big role in the film. He's apparently a fan seeing as he did stuff with the character during his comic run.

Justice League comes out this November

A few tidbits from the panel :

    • The show was originally thought of as a  movie.

    • When Greg Berlanti got on board, he told them " You're gonna need a dead body" When that happened, Riverdale turned from a "coming of age' story to a "loss of innocence" story.

    • Lili on Betty and Veronica: "They love each other and they really, really care about each other. They complement each other so well".

    • They want to do something with Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It would be darker, a bit like Rosemary's Baby.

    • Jiosie & The Pussycats will not sing any Archie original songs, but they will cover "Sugar Sugar" in episode two.

    • Casey Cott on Kevin Keller: His character will have a romantic relationship in episode 4.

    • Jughead is the narrator of the show.
