Benjamin Millepede Claims He Left Paris Ballet Because of Racism

Benjamin Millepied, the former director of the Paris Opera Ballet and Kevin Federline husband of Natalie Portman, has a documentary coming out that follows his time at the Paris Opera Ballet. In "Rest", which comes out on January 13, he calls out the ballet world for its vicious racism. He also says that the POB has lost its reputation and quality. The documentary comes shortly after revelations that he abused expenses and funds at the POB. Some quotes:

“I heard someone say a black girl in a ballet is a distraction. If there are 25 white girls, everyone will look at the black girl. Everyone must be alike in a company, meaning everyone must be white...I have to shatter this racist idea.”

“This company, from the 1800s to the 1950s, was reputed for its phrasing, for the way the dancers moved. This is sorely missing from the school today.”

“I’ve realized that it’s too hard to turn this [organization] into what I think is most relevant for ballet today.”

Amanda has studied Weimar Germany extensively and thinks that Trump's presidency will produce great art.

She says Trump's presidency will encourage artists to go into basements and speakeasies to create amazing satirically political art.

On the Academy's lack of diversity, Lee Daniels had this to say:
“Go out and do the work. Oscars so white! So what? Do your work. Let your legacy speak and stop complaining, man. Are we really in this for the awards? If I had thought that way — that the world was against me — I wouldn’t be here now. These whiny people that think we’re owed something are incomprehensible and reprehensible to me. I don’t expect acknowledgment or acceptance from white America. I’m going to be me.”

He also says he wants white people to feel cool and that him giving white characters swag or whatever will heal the country.

Denzel Washington says colorism doesn't affect success in Hollywood+the solution is to work harder

When he was asked in an interview with BET if colorism held darker-skinned actors back from achieving success in Hollywood, Washington pointed to “Fences” co-star Viola Davis to suggest light-skinned actors are not favoured over dark-skinned actors “One of the best roles for a woman of any color in the last, in a good good while or at least any movie that I’ve been in, a dark-skinned woman has in this film,”

Washington went on to suggest that not being casted is due to skill level and determination not skin tone.
"The easiest thing to do is to blame someone else, the system. Yeah, there’s a possibility, maybe, that you’re not good enough, but it’s easy to say it’s someone else’s fault. But there’s a possibility that you’re not ready and you can still blame it on someone else instead of getting ready.”

His comments came as a surprised because in 2012 he spoke about telling his daughter that she would face disadvantages as an actress because she is dark-skinned.
Viola Davis has herself spoken about the colourism faced specifically by dark skinned women in hollywood; in a 2015 interview with The Wrap she said for women of colour in acting “the paper-bag test is still very much alive and kicking.”

15 (5) Reasons DCTV is Better than the DCEU

    $

    14. The Multiverse

-the arrowverse introduced the multiverse in the flash season 2
-allows for fun ways to bring back dead characters (floyd lawton, ronnie raymond, laurel lance)
-new ways to see current characters (54 different harrison wells)
-don't even know if the dceu will introduce the multiverse anytime soon
    -known/explored earths: 1, 2, 3, & 38 so far

    10. Time Travel

-might never be a part of dceu like it is in dctv
-barry fucking things up & trying to fix them
-lead to spin-off legends of tomorrow

    8. Felicity & Cisco

-they both bring humor and light to the sometimes dark series
    -dceu's attempts at humor suck

    7. Smaller Characters Get to Appear

-suicide squad only film so far that attempted to bring in smaller characters
-dceu's focus is on the big players
-examples: mr. terrific, ragman, livewire, silver banshee, miss martian,
damien darhk, trickster, rip hunter, vixen & constantine

    1. DCTV Has Fun

-suicide squad was the attempt to inject humor into the dceu but flopped
-coloring of films themselves are too dark
-dctv's arrow (and gotham) are darker series but flash and supergirl lighten things up
-shows don't take themselves as seriously

Steve Martin Criticized For Tweet About Carrie Fisher

Steve Martin deleted a twitter tribute to Carrie Fisher after being criticized for what some felt was its sexist nature. On Tuesday, Martin (who had a brief fling with Fisher in the 70s) sent out this tweet:

He deleted the tweet after some of his followers objected to what they felt was a sexist focus on Fisher's looks ("I think she apprised to be something higher than just being pretty. How do you want to be remembered?" one wrote).

New York Magazine published an article on their website criticizing Martin and other men whose tributes to Fisher appeared to focus on how attractive they found her. In an article titled "Steve Martin, This Isn't How You Pay Tribute to Carrie Fisher" (note: the title of the article has since been changed), author Claire Landsbaum wrote:

That characterization of Leia — as a wet dream for prepubescent men — is something Fisher spoke out against her whole career...So remember Fisher for her immense talent, her outspoken feminism, and her moving commentary on mental health — not for the way she looked onscreen.

Some people have come to Martin's defense, including Walking Dead actor Michael Cudlitz and Piers Morgan:

ONTD Original: Top 10 Forgotten American Idol Auditions

    $
    0
    0
We all remember some of the other notoriously awful Idol-hopefuls (William Hung, Mary Roach, and Larry Platt aka, the "Pants on the Ground" man.
But what about those who were just as awful, who did not gain as much publicity? Here is a lookback at more terrible American Idol auditions.
(Note: even if some of these were obvious set-ups by producers, I will still include them, for the sake of laughs).

    1. Tashawn Moore

    american idol (Tashawn moore)by staco2
Tashawn Moore came into the season 5 auditions in Minneapolis, singing none other than Minneapolis's own Prince. She butchered up the lyrics to "Kiss" quite brutally, and kept forgetting the lyrics and re-singing parts she already sang. (Sorry the video is in French, I couldn't find an English one. The singing is in English though, that's all that matters?)

    2. Paul Maturano

Paul Maturano creeped the judges out with his stalking anthem which he wrote himself about Paula Abdul, during season 7. The song contained lyrics such as "I'm not much of a talker, so I guess that I'll just stalk her. And I'll stalk her, if she were a doggy I'd walk her" and more strange forced rhymes.

    3. Ty Hemmerling aka Bikini Boy

In response to the previous season's infamous "Bikini Girl", the local Denver radio station sent out Ty Hemmerling to audition in a bikini singing "Achy Breaky Heart". The judges just walked right out of the room.

    4. Rhonetta Johnson

Rhonetta came in with her...interesting ensemble, and her belief that she would be able to compete with JLo and Janet on the charts. She sang several songs during her audition, all of which sounded terrible. But the one thing better than her audition, was her attitude that followed. She talked shit about the judges afterwards, especially Paula.

    5. Sarah Goldberg

Unlike most contestants, Sarah was actually aware that she could not sing. What she hoped instead was that they would provide her singing lessons, and that they could take an average tone-deaf person and turn them into a great singer. But like others, the best part was her reaction afterwards.

    6. James Lewis

James Lewis, a tourguide from Philadelphia, sang in an extremely deep voice, making the words sound almost completely unintelligble.

    7. Ian Benardo

Ian previously tried out for "So You Think You Can Dance", in which he was also rejected. This time, was no better. He "sang" Gloria, and similar to the aftermath of his SYTYCD audition, he afterwards badmouths Simon for "not being American".

    8. Alberto Hertado

Alberto came in with an original song he wrote, which the judges deemed too depressing. He also made a giant fan, painted with "American Idol's Biggest Fan" on it. (Note: I could not find a better quality video of this.)

    9. Julie "Isadora" Furman

Julie/Isadora sang (?) "Lady Marmalade" followed by some strange orgasmic-sounding noises. She also thought Chris Daughtry was Versace.

    10. Jarrod Norell

Jarrod sang "Amazing Grace", which Kara Dioguardi said "sounded like a lawnmower". When the judges say no, he continues to sing, and refuses to leave, leading security to escort him out.

    14. GETTING RID OF SPEEDY’S DRUG ADDICTION
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

-Roy's drug addiction was an iconic moment for the character and for comics in general with them dealing with real life issues.
-Since Thea is technically Speedy now, they could give the storyline to her given her past and it's a storyline Willa could handle.

    12. SIDELINING CHINA WHITE
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

-China White has been a major villain in the Green Arrow comics, she was part of the reason Oliver turned into Green Arrow
-In Arrow, China got sidelined and became a henchwoman who appears here and there when she should be a major crime boss in the Arrowverse.

    9. THE DEATH OF LAUREL LANCE
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

-Black Canary is one of the most central and important characters to Green Arrow, she is the Lois to his Superman.
-Arrow gave her a lackluster death just when they found their groove with writing the character somewhat properly

    6. MAKING OLIVER TOO SERIOUS
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

-One thing that sets Oliver apart from Batman is his humor. He doesn't take life to seriously and knows how to have a good time.
-Oliver Queen in Arrow is the poor mans Batman.

    4. TURNING AMANDA WALLER INTO A PUSHOVER
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

-Amanda 'The Wall' Waller is one of DCs most revered female characters. She doesn't have superpowers but her ruthlessness and political intrigue made plenty of villains and heroes afraid of her.
-Amanda Waller in Arrow was a woman of very little words who was never used properly. She was killed by a nobody while being held hostage.
