In a rare interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1, The Weeknd discussed many things, including drug use and songwriting, the full interview has now been released and here are some highlights below.
On drinking:- Used to perform drunk to be able to perform on stage (nerves), but watched his performances back and hated them,
"he wasn't a star", so he booked a ton of shows to teach himself how to perform sober.
His misogynistic, drug and dark related themes:- The Weeknd is a dark character he created and he writes through him, compares it to Scarface,
"It's like a villain, it's horrible but you can't stop looking at it"
- "It is who I am to myself, in my writing. Sometimes you take him and create more, and it becomes this beast."- Is asked why he thinks women love his music despite the themes/content, he mentions 50 Shades of Grey as a reference,
"It's the darkness. It's raw, it's dark."- He created The Weeknd cause fans don't wanna meet a "normal" person when they see their fave celeb. The character The Weeknd is cooler than him in real life.
On religion:- Used to be Atheist,
"Life's shit, so there's no way there is a God and this is happening", refers to his childhood a bit,
"I had no brothers or sisters. I wanted a dog but I had allergies...", but he's evolved and changed his views...his success and good things made him view his struggles as a test. Now he's spiritual.
