The 'record number' of LGBT characters on TV remains depressingly low
4.8% (43 characters) of characters in the 2016/2017 TV season are LGBTQ, compared to 95.4 percent (854 characters) being straight. On cable shows, there are 92 LGBTQ characters (compared to 84 from last year).
Out of the LGBT characters, almost half were gay men, 23% were bisexual women, 17% were lesbian, 7% were bisexual men, and 4% were transgender.
About 70% of LGBTQ characters on both broadcast and cable were white (overall, nearly 36% of characters on broadcast programming were poc)
Since the beginning of 2016 more than 25 lesbian/bi female characters have died on TV shows, which sends a toxic message and how that's a trend in how Hollywood has treated LGBTQ characters.
The death of a lesbian/bi character "served no other purpose than to further the narrative of a more central (and often straight, cisgender) character" in most cases
Also says that it's not enough for these characters to be on our screen, but it's also about the screentime they get and what their storyline is.
