“Ghost Stories”: The ubiquitous anti-feminism of young adult romances

0

In a Guardian article last November, Tanya Gold condemned the Twilight franchise and the paranormal progeny it has spawned, calling them sado-masochistic “disempowerment fantasies” masquerading as fairy tales, normalising abuse in the name of risqué romance. But her argument – though apt – hardly goes far enough. To focus criticism of the now-ubiquitous “YA (Young Adult) paranormal” genre on the relationship between its heroines and their “bad boy” lovers is to ignore the more insidious, perhaps more dangerous message the genre sends to teenage girls: that romantic desirability is the proof of, and the reward for, individual worth.

I view the genre with an insider's perspective: I paid my way through university by ghostwriting YA romances for various publishing houses. It was an easy job at first: padding chapter word counts through the judicious use of erotic ekphrasis, mentally calculating how many pennies each adjective added to my bank account: (“His rippling, supple muscular chest, shimmering in the bright sunlight. His smooth, almost preternaturally marble-white skin...”). Yet, after over twenty such books – each written to my employers' chapter-by-chapter outlines – I began to feel increasingly uneasy about the message such tropes send to the genre's young, largely female readership.

Certainly, there is something to be said for the way in which these books provide teenage girls with an opportunity to explore their incipient sexual desires. My typical heroine (let's call her Mary Sue) not only experiences arousal; she, like Twilight's Bella, is often the sexual aggressor, her numerous suitors holding back at a safe distance, non-threatening objects for adolescent sexual curiosity. (There were no Mormon vampires, but various plot devices often barred the way to consummation; in Mary's world, blood-letting and psychic mind-melds often serve as unsubtle metaphors for sex, providing her virginal readers with a fantasy sanitized of unfamiliar appendages).

Equally promising from a feminist perspective is the notion that our heroine can not only desire two or more suitors, but also act on that desire (up to a point) without condemnation. If Twilight's Bella vacillates slightly between husky werewolf Jacob and lethargic parasite Edward, Mary Sue is usually juggling up to four warlocks or mermen, passionately kissing one in Chapter Five before succumbing to the smoldering stares of his rival in Chapter Six. (Jealousy is rarely an issue; her love interests are usually so desperate for our Mary's affections that they're willing to wait on the sidelines: a fantasy of puppy-dog devotion that belies their purported dangerousness; these are “bad boys” in name only.)

Yet this proves problematic when this devotion not only replaces, but informs, character development. The typical “character pack” provided with my outline tells me that Mary is “nice, smart,” and other vague adjectives; she rarely gets narrative space to prove it (I'm lucky if I can sneak in a scene of her reading a book). Her qualities are informed ones, emerging not from the story itself but from the lips of Mary's besotted suitors, ever quick to reassure her (and the reader) that she is the single kindest, most beautiful, worthiest girl in the world.

It is this concept of worth I find most troubling. Mary Sue doesn't find love through common interests, through shared experiences, through long conversations or walks along the beach. Her relationships are not predicated on the idea that two people, with all their flaws, might discover themselves operating in emotional synchronicity. Rather, Mary is loved because she is the best (often, the plot demands that she be extra-special, possessing a secret royal lineage, or magical powers exceeding that of even "ordinary" mermaids). That she is the best is proven, somewhat circularly, by the love she inspires: heroes, villains, and minor characters alike must prostrate themselves at her feet: a vicious circle of affirmation.

Worse still is the genre's treatment of the girls unlucky enough to share space on the page with Mary Sue. Having established that love and worth are inextricably intertwined, any girl who appears on the scene must of course desire one of Mary's love interests; for this, invariably, she must be punished. Each outline I received featured three or more such characters – ditzy, shallow, usually blonde, existing only to salivate over Mary's harem before promptly being rejected or killed off. Genuine female friendship is nonexistent – Mary might, at best, have an anodyne hanger-on to make her look good in comparison – in the world of the YA novel, other women are stupid, jealous, or evil; they exist only to affirm Mary's sovereign desirability.

I have since hung up the ghostwriting mantle, but the genre is still going strong: “New Adult” – YA's more explicit cousin – carries on where I left off, producing knockoffs of Fifty Shades of Grey. Its popularity, however, leaves me wary. Must our young adult fiction teach teenage girls that their self-worth is predicated on being loved, and that love in turn is merited only by being the prettiest, the worthiest, the best? Its promise of female erotic fulfillment is diminished by the implicit caveat that it is merited only by being the object of male affirmation. Why can't Mary Sue experience desire on her own terms – for an equal, a partner, a friend? Until then, Mary's world has no room for human relationships – in any sense of the word.

The Walking Dead 3x12 Promo "Clear"

Jorge Garcia joins CBS pilot 'The Ordained'

0
0

Lost alum Jorge Garcia is heading to CBS.

The actor, fresh off a guest gig on ABC's Once Upon a Time, has joined the cast of the network's drama pilot The Ordained, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Ordained revolves around Tom (Boardwalk Empire's Charlie Cox), the son of a Kennedy-esque family who leaves the priesthood and becomes a lawyer to prevent his politician sister from being assassinated.

Garcia will play Carlos, the law firm's staff investigator who is Tom's main ally and only friend at the office. He's an easygoing hotdog-eating guy unlike the rest of the suits at the office who uses unorthodox methods to get the job done and often does so with levity and humor.

Journalist/author Lisa Takeuchi Cullen will pen the script for CBS Television Studios and will executive produce alongside Frank Marshall, Larry Shuman and A.B. Fischer. RJ Cutler will helm the pilot, with Robert Zotnowski on board as a co-EP.

Repped by APA and Kritzer Levine, Garcia's recent credits also include Fox's Alcatraz and guest gigs on Californication, Fringe and How I Met Your Mother.

Academy Award Winner Adele at the Oscars!

0
0

The Oscars... Adele couldn't have picked a grander scene for her first live performance of "Skyfall," the title track from the latest Bond film. About 30 minutes before winning best original song on Sunday, the British dynamo led a large scale run of the track.

With hair down and gold sequined black dress shimmering, Adele did her trademark stand-and-sway and this-big hand gestures as a full chorus and massive backing band (complete with a 15-plus orchestra) brought the layered, building track home.

After, she smiled and gazed at the upper tier of the Hollywood & Highland Center as Hollywood's a-list applauded (but no standing "o").

The performance could boost sales of the song, which peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 and has sold 1.6 million downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Earlier in the night, an ageless Shirley Bassey (76) sang another Bond title track that peaked at No. 8, the 1964 classic "Goldfinger," during a tribute to the 51-year-old film series.

Here's a bit of advice for all you awards show handicappers: Never, ever pick against Adele. If the British pop singer is up for an honor -- any honor -- chances are, she's taking home the trophy.

"Skyfall," Adele's aching, dramatic theme from the acclaimed James Bond movie of the same name, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Oscar voters agreed with the judgment of the Golden Globes, where Adele also took the award for the best new song in a movie.

Adele faced stiffer competition at the Golden Globes. To win that honor, she had to beat Taylor Swift, Jon Bon Jovi, and other popular singers. Her Academy Award competition was, by contrast, middle-of-the-road and unexciting: "Before My Time" from the climate-change documentary "Chasing Ice," "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from the crude "Ted," "Pi's Lullaby" from the surreal "Life of Pi," and "Suddenly," from the beloved musical "Les Miserables."

The Bond franchise is rightfully known for its excellent music, much of it composed by the conductor John Barry. Surprisingly. "Skyfall," which was written by Adele and her producer and collaborator Paul Epworth, is the first Bond song to ever take the Oscar in this category. None of the signature songs from the Sean Connery movies -- including the classics "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" -- were even nominated for the award. "Live and Let Die," Paul McCartney's wonderfully bombastic theme song from Roger Moore's first turn as Bond, earned a nomination in 1973, but lost the award to the treacly "The Way We Were."

In a similar contest, Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better," the hit from "The Spy Who Loved Me," lost to Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." "For Your Eyes Only," Sheena Easton's atmospheric theme from the Bond film of the same name, was beaten by Christopher Cross' blithe "Arthur's Theme."

Adele scored at the 2013 Grammy Awards, too, and nobody seemed more surprised than she did. After dominating the 2012 Grammys, she probably felt it was time to give somebody else a chance. Instead, she took home another statue for Best Pop Solo Performance for her live version of "Set Fire to the Rain."

Still only 24 years old, Adele Adkins has emerged as one of the premiere pop singers of the last ten years. "21," her 2011 release, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and spun off three massive hits -- "Rain," the slow piano ballad "Someone Like You," and the smoldering "Rolling in the Deep."

Seth MacFarlane's Jokes: The Worst Of The Bad

0
0

Seth MacFarlane isn't known for his political correctness -- but some of the jokes he made while hosting the Oscars Sunday night seemed especially offensive or just plain bad. Here are a few of the worst:

On "Django Unchained":"This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie."

On slavery:"If you bumped into Don Cheadle in the studio lot, would you try and free him?"

On the price of beauty:"For all those women who had the 'flu.' it paid off. Lookin' good."

On Daniel Day Lewis' method acting:"I would argue that the actor who got most inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth."

On Ben Affleck:"First time I saw him with all that dark facial hair I thought, my God, the Kardashians have finally made the jump to film."

On Hispanic actors:“We’ve reached that point where Javier Bardem, Salma Hayek or Penelope Cruz takes the stage and we have no idea what they’re saying but we don’t care because they’re so attractive.”

Anne Hathaway's Spontaneous Oscar Gown Swap: Prada Over Valentino

0
0

When it comes to selecting the Oscar gown, it's no surprise that quite a bit of careful analysis goes into the strategic style selection.

After all, an Oscar dress on a nominee, let alone a winner, will forever be remembered in history.

So upon seeing Anne Hathaway in a blush-pink Prada design on last night's red carpet, we couldn't help but wonder what happened to her trademark Valentino couture loyalty. After all, the star has consistently worn the designer on countless red carpets, and even had Mr. Valentino design her wedding dress months ago.

The supposed Valentino dress Anne was supposed to wear, on right.

More peculiarly, Valentino even sent out a confirmation press release earlier in the afternoon declaring that the Les Misérables actress would be donning a design from the house, and shortly thereafter Fashion Police's George Kotsiopoulos predicted on-air during the E! Oscars preshow that she'd wear an ivory embellished gown with a high neckline by the designer.

So what happened?

A source close to the actress confirms to E! News that shortly before Hathaway stepped out on the red carpet she learned that Amanda Seyfried's Alexander McQueen Oscar gown was strikingly similar to her selected Valentino design, and opted for the Prada dress last minute.

A quick side-by-side comparison shows that both pale gowns were embellished with beautiful delicate floral embroidery—perhaps a little too close for comfort, in the opinion of the Oscar winner.

Hathaway explained to E!'s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that she "didn't know what I was wearing until about three hours ago," and said her work schedule was to blame. "This is the one that spoke to me in the end."

After the announcement that pop icon, Kylie Minogue joined Jay-Z's Roc Nation for management services earlier this month, industry sources speculated that the Princess of Pop would release a new single "soon". subscribers only version

After punching a massive metal dragon, calling Loki "Reindeer Games" and fixing a hovering aircraft carrier on the fly in The Avengers, Iron Man has a lot to live up to in the upcoming Iron Man 3 - and from the looks of his latest Empire cover (on shelves Thursday February 28), he just might manage it. Looking closely at both the newsstand edition and the subscribers only cover, you can clearly see that Tony's new golden suit hasn't had the best of days - though with Mr. Stark being a Genius Billionaire Playboy Philanthropist an' all, his hair and beard are suitably perfect.

The movie, of course, finds Robert Downey Jr.’s Lethal Weapon up to his metallic neck in trouble as he’s targeted by The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) and other nasty types intent on taking him down. Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black from a script by Black and Drew Pearce, also features Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale and Jon Favreau. It’ll finally swagger into our cinemas on April 26.

New (some not so much) posters featuring pretty much everyone.

'Absolutely Wasted': Swaying Renee Zellweger Appears Drunk As She Hands Out Oscars

Star sparked speculation she may have hit the free bubbly a little hard on Twitter.

Renee Zellweger might not have been up for the Oscar but if there was an award for appearing the most drunk at an award ceremony, we think she might have swung it.

The actress reunited with the cast of Chicago to present the gong for Best Original Score and appeared a little unsteady on stage, swaying dramatically and even failed to read out the winner Life Of Pi, forcing Queen Latifah to step in and save the day.

The star had shined on the red carpet in a stunning gold Carolina Herrera gown but by the time she joined her co-stars on stage to present two awards it seems the free booze at the event, might have been taking an effect.

While Richard Gere read out the nominees for Best Original Song, which was awarded to Adele for 'Skyfall', the Bridget Jones star stood swaying next to the actor, with a bemused smile on her face. Her eyes even appeared to close at one point.

who are you, white man?

Later when announcing the award for Best Original Score she stared blankly at the card when Gere held it up for her, failing to read off the winner, until Queen Latifah leaned over her to announce the win for 'Life Of Pi'.

i can't see.

Her performance wasn't missed by fans on Twitter with one writing: “Did you guys see the #Oscars tonight? Ya, neither did Renee Zellweger.”While another wrote: “I figured Renee Zellweger's divorce from Kenny Chesney was rough, but not "my eyes have disappeared" rough. #oscars”

Despite the awards, stars and even Jennifer Lawrence's fall on the way to pick up her Best Actress gong, it seems Renee's moment of glory was the top point of the night for several fans.

“Why isn't the whole world talking about Renee Zellweger's melt down at the Oscars last night? It's scared the bejesus out of me,” one asked. While another added: “Highlight of my night seeing an absolutely wasted Renee Zellweger on stage at the #Oscars.”

sorcery

This shit was hilarious. Actual QUEEN Latifah swoops in to save the day! Also, there's no Renée Zellweger tag? (and i've spelled her name with the correct accentuation, unlike this article)

ETA: My apologies for the original title of this post. Thank you to ametalheart for the pictures in your comment to clarify the argument at hand.

Numéro Puts A White Model In Blackface…Again

0
0

The fashion industry is by no means all bad, but it does have its moments of being incredibly tone-deaf and out-of-touch, and the latest comes inside the pages of Numéro‘s March issue, which features an “African Queen” editorial. But instead of, you know, hiring a black model, the magazine painted a white model in blackface.

Sixteen-year-old Ondria Hardin, who was involved in Vogue‘s underage model scandal, sports a deep, deep tan in the spread, along with printed ensembles that are obviously styled to portray a colonial-era “African Queen”. It’s weird to think that no one involved with the shoot thought to step back and wonder if putting a white model in blackface would be offensive — because it is, has been, and always will be.

Jezebel points out that Ford Models, the agency that reps Hardin, also has a handful of black models on its roster — all of whom could have fit the spread’s theme better than the North Carolinia teen. We guess we really shouldn’t be too surprised at this spread. After all, the mag toed the line two years ago with a questionable Constance Jablonski shoot.

The Gorn from Star Trek got a face lift y'all!

'Star Trek': Leapin' lizards, it's Gorn Day -- FIRST LOOK

Pssst. Hey. Yeah, you. You wanna see some Gorn?

Star Trek: The Video Game arrives April 23 with big ambitions and a complicated heritage, but really, the thing we want know about the most is the Gorn. To recap, the Gorn are a nasty race of reptilian brutes who were famously introduced on the original Star Trek television series in “Arena,” the classic episode that first aired in January 1967. You might remember the epic battle between Capt. James T. Kirk (the T stands for “torn-shirt”) and the syrup-slow captain of a Gorn ship (played by some dude in a rigid rubber suit). Classic stuff whether you love it this much or hate it this much or can in fact no longer tell the difference.

The Gorn get their widest Starfleet spotlight ever with the new game — it creates a fuller portrait of this cold-blooded conqueror race — and that’s why we’ve decided that today is Gorn Day and the first installment of Get to Know Your Gorn series…

Gorn_01

Wow, he is nasty — but also a somewhat regal bearing, no? In the new game, the Commander is the leader of the Gorn and his lime-colored shock troops have invaded New Vulcan, the refuge that is home to the survivor community from Mr. Spock’s obliterated homeworld. The Commander is large (10-feet tall) and in charge (which he gives him plenty of opportunity for torture and arranged blood-sport).

The Gorn Commander is a higher class of Gorn, and not far below him are the cunning and pragmatic Gorn Sentinels, one of the largest, strongest, and most vicious of the hissing invaders. Their weapon of choice is the Arc Driver, the most powerful handheld weapon in their clawed clutches — it unleashes a bolt of energy that disintegrates all organic matter — especially if they are wrapped in a red shirt. Sentinels are visually imposing but their tactical power make them more than just another ugly face.

Gorn_02

Join us next week and we’ll be all Gorn again.

All eyes on Jennifer Lawrence at the pre-Oscar party (and more)!

240213-mario-testino-kim-kardashian-de

Last night was one of those funny, fabulous and surreal LA nights.

I began my evenin240213-zoe-kravitz-oscars-deg at the exclusive Mario Testino Prism gallery exhibition private view. Marisa Tomei, Kim Kardashian, Poppy Delevingne, Miss Jay from America's Next Top Model and Mario himself all turned out.

The gallery was packed, everybody was drinking pisco sours and the bar had a queue six people back. Not cool. But the pictures were awesome - there was one Kate Moss image which literally lit up the room.

But following Testino things really did hot up and it ended up being one of those nights where you 'ping' out of bed in the morning because you've enjoyed yourself so much and you can't wait to tell everyone what went on!

In fact being at the Weinstein event was actually one of those parties that gives me faith in the showbiz industry once again. There wasn't a reality star in sight - just wall to wall A-Listers. And no VIP area.

The event was held in the plush surroundings of Soho House, LA. Movie boss Harvey Weinstein invited his nominees and the creme de la creme of Hollywood movie talent to come to his soiree and gear up for today's proceedings to kick off.

To start with I got in the lift with Zoe Kravitz and mother Lisa Bonet. Four people in a lift. Zoe picked up on the fact we were British and imitated my accent pretty much immediatey. I replied: "Why is it whenever an American tries to do a British accent it always sounds like a Dick Van Dyke 'Mary Poppins' accent?"

Zoe replied: "You're so right, Guv'nor'" The X-Men star seemed like she was very much able to have fun. And wow is she hot - well, with a dad like Lenny it's no major surprise.

The party didn't seem too fabulous to begin with - the only star I was able to root out was Holly Valance. I was grilling her on how long it's going to be before she starts a family. The reply was: "Not long, but I'm on the sauce tonight if that's what you're thinking."

I quickly realised there were two sides to this party. The main room was full of nobodies - the garden room was full of the talent. You could tell that was where the action was because there was a one-in one-out policy. Even Juliette Lewis couldn't get in because of fire marshals orders when she came storming past me and announced loudly: "My boss Harvey is in there, man." The doorman couldn't have cared less.

Eventually Juliette and me did mange to make it in. And when we were in it was like that scene at the end of the Goonies when the kids find the treasure ship full of gold.
240213-kerry-washington-jamie-foxx-de
Jamie Foxx was in the entrance telling Piers Morgan that he fully supported his views on gun laws and the fact America needs to grow a pair of balls and change their thoughts on guns. Piers told me: "It's an extraordinary situation where buying a gun is as simple as going into Walmart. And that needs to change. Jamie told me he fully supports my opinion and wants to appear on my CNN show this week. I'm thrilled."

I asked how life was for Piers after the recent birth of his fourth son, the former newspaper editor's first child with wife Celia Walden. "It's great," he said. "But I'm like Pablo Picasso and I've told Celia that he was still banging them out at 84." Good luck with that, Celia.

Jamie spent much of the night hanging with the Django Unchained crew. Kerry Washington is ridiculously beautiful up close, Quentin Tarantino wore a beanie and looked permanently lost in the throng of the party and I never realised Jamie has such a ghastly tattoo on the back of his head.

After an hour the room became very focused on the area where I was standing with a friend. I looked over my right shoulder and Leonardo DiCaprio had appeared with a few man pals. Then within a few minutes Oscar nominees Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence pitched up. Jennifer was wearing black and looked impeccable. I'm told Rachel Zoe has been styling her for the past few months. Personally, I think she's been dressing too old with all this Dior. But some would say it's timeless. Let's hope she dresses young and her age for the red carpet later on.

It was almost like a love triangle was developing right before my very eyes. Leo and Bradley were both vying for Jennifer's attention. Jen rested her arm on Bradley but spoke to Leo. She appeared close with Bradley, if you ask me. Those two do have the most sensational chemistry in Silver Linings Playbook - and there have been rumours.

Let's just say they looked comfortable with each other.

240213-bradley-cooper-jennifer-lawrence-de

But Leonardo was definitely making a great effort.

I obviously wanted to get as close as I could. Leo had an endless supply of bourbon being delivered to his table in beautiful crystal glasses as he sucked on an electronic ciggie furiously.

At one point the waiter came forwards and gave him a glass of bourbon and there was a spare. I grabbed it, despite blooming hating the stuff, and slurped on it. How he was standing after all those drinks I have no idea. But who cared - I was drinking Leonardo's bourbon.

Jennifer was the first to leave and I wished her good luck at the Oscars and told her to "win it for Britain". She laughed and replied: "I'll lie back and think of England." And on that note she gave me a wink.

Bradley sloped off second and Leonardo went shortly after…with three girls dressed in skin tight Herve Leger dresses. Obviously. The Weinstein party proved Hollywood is more alive than ever.

Now it's time to prepare for the big one. It's Oscar time!

Until tomorrow, people.

Genuinely disappointed at people not knowing who Little Edie was. What the hell. Nothing will beat the season two game. Anyway time for Untucked!

Lady Mary invites you into a Downton Abbey post!

DOWNTON Abbey is introducing its first black character as part of a storyline about race relations in the 1920s.

The award-winning stately home drama is seeking an actor to play musician Jack Ross.

Casting notes were sent out to actors’ agents earlier this month. They describe Ross as “Male, 25-30. A musician (singer) at an exclusive club in the 20s.

“He’s black and very handsome. A real man (not a boy) with charm and charisma.”

Whoever lands the role should “ideally be able to sing brilliantly”. The notes add: “Overall he should be a very attractive man with a certain wow factor.” Jack Ross will play a key part in the fourth series of the hit TV saga alongside a string of other fresh faces.

Lady Mary Crawley gets a new love interest — dashing Lord Anthony Gillingham.

The character also helps the family with their money woes, so he could be a big hit with Mary’s father, the Earl of Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville. In casting notes, the character is described as a “good looking, very charismatic” 35 to 45-year-old with a “perfect cut glass accent. He’s warm and charming, but also a strong man with morals.”

Another new character is a party-loving cad called Sir John Bullock who “must be able to act drunk”.

Filming on Downton is due to start on March 23.

Filming started a couple of weeks ago, so idk what that bit about filming starting March 23 is about.

I'm guessing the black man will be tied to Edith's story? Because she'll be in London more as a writer and thus might be more likely to meet a musician? Also he sounds like a one-episode character. I doubt he'll be a regular.

"Skyfall" could see a 45% jump after Adele's win; Bassey's signature version of "Goldfinger" eyes a 275% gain

Music from Adele, Dame Shirley Bassey, Jennifer Hudson and more are all due to see huge sales increases on this week's Billboard charts thanks to Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony.

Sources suggest "Skyfall," which won Adele and Paul Epworth the Oscar for best original song, could see a 45% jump in digital download sales for the week ending Feb. 24. In the previous week, the single moved 36,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. (We won't have the latest week's official SoundScan sales figures until Wednesday, Feb. 27.)

"Skyfall" is the first Academy Award winner to have also been a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2003, when Eminem's No. 1 single "Lose Yourself" won. "Skyfall" is also the first song from a James Bond film to take home the Oscar.

Speaking of James Bond, it was a big night on the Awards for the silver screen's most famous secret agent. The Oscars celebrated Bond's 50th anniversary in motion pictures with a montage of moments and a performance of "Goldfinger" by Dame Shirley Bassey.
