Another reason to hate NBC: Tonight's Parks was originally intended as a finale

Hitfix's Alan Sepinwall has a long interview with Parks and Recreation co-creator/showrunner Mike Schur today, in which he reveals they made the first of tonight's two new episodes a possible series finale because NBC had only ordered a 13-episode season originally (didn't they say they'd ordered 22?). The network ordered nine more episodes for a full 22 shortly after the episode was filmed, but the writers made it a special episode with a sense of closure just in case. Here's Schur explaining the situation:

"The way we operate every year is we that don't know what our future is. So we try to tell the juiciest, most interesting stories we can tell. And at the end of the year, we write a series finale. Something that, if this is it, we go out the way we want to go out. And we try not to close it off so completely that if the show comes back for another year, that we have nowhere to go …

And so we had this kind of Spidey sense that if we wanted to make a hundred percent sure that we would not be caught unaware, that we should build to something around episode 13. And we did that. We got our back nine, so we’re going to go all the way to 22. So there is a kind of little thing that happens in episode 13 where the idea was, 'We’re going to assume we have a full season, but just in case to be extra sure, we’re going to build to something in 13, and we’re going to stick to it.' That even if we got our back 9 order, which we did, we wouldn't deviate from the plan. We would execute that plan and then just go past it."

Internet Helps Raise Money For Stars Of Oscar Nominated Short Film To Come To Oscars

The teenage stars of an Oscar-nominated short film from Afghanistan arrived in Los Angeles on Wednesday for the Academy Awards after an Internet campaign raised enough money to pay for their trip.

"Buzkashi Boys" actors Fawad Mohammadi and Jawanmard Paiz will walk the red carpet and rub shoulders with Hollywood's biggest stars at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The film focuses on two children growing up in Kabul who dream of becoming Buzkashi riders, horsemen who compete in the dangerous Afghan national sport similar to polo in which riders try to carry a headless goat across a goal line.

The film garnered U.S. director Sam French an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film.

Its producers launched the campaign because, they said, they lacked a travel budget for the 14-year-old actors.

"I'm so happy and excited," Mohammadi told Reuters at Los Angeles International Airport after flying more than 18 hours from the Afghan capital. "I can't say my feelings."

Some 237 people donated money to the travel fund, which raised $11,751, eclipsing its $10,000 goal, fundraising website Rally.org said. Donations were received from 13 countries, including the United States, Afghanistan, India and Germany.

Turkish Airlines donated the tickets for Mohammadi, Paiz and a chaperone.

Mohammadi, an amateur actor with piercing green eyes, gained international attention following the film's release last year for his personal story as a fatherless youth who grew up selling maps of Kabul to tourists in its Chicken Street market.

Both teens said they wanted to see all the actors during their week in Hollywood in which they also plan to visit amusement parks Disneyland and Universal Studios.

Speaking of famous actors, Mohammadi said: "I can't say 'This one' or 'That one,' (but) I want to see Rambo, Sylvester Stallone."

One of the boys in the film is a street kid like Mohammadi, the other the son of a blacksmith forced to spend long hours in his father's dark workshop sharpening ax heads.

French said the goal is to make the week-long trip culturally relevant for the teens.

"Just the fact that we're talking about something other than the war, other than bombs and bullets, I think is a huge step forward," French said. "And hopefully we can show that these kids are like normal kids everywhere."

Mohammadi and Paiz will fly to Washington for screenings of the film on February 27 and begin their journey back to Kabul on March 1.

"Buzkashi Boys," which runs for just 28 minutes, is the first film to be produced by the Afghan Film Project, a non-profit group that aims to train filmmakers in Afghanistan.

Lindsay Lohan Loses: Lawsuit Over Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" Lyrics Dismissed

Pitbull has locked up a win over Lindsay Lohan.

The actress' lawsuit against the Cuban-American rapper, Ne-Yo and Afrojack over their smash-hit 2011 song "Give Me Everything"—in which Pitbull raps once, "I've got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan"—was dismissed today by a federal judge, who ruled the tune's lyrics are protected by the First Amendment, which covers freedom of speech and creative expression.

"This will further solidify the rights of artists to express themselves in song," Pitbull's attorney, Marcos Jimenez, told E! News Thursday, noting that his client "wasn't shocked," but "disappointed" when Lohan first sued in August 2011.

Pitbull "is very pleased," Jimenez added. "He felt it was very important to address this head on to protect his right and the rights of other artist. He decided to fight this."

In response to a request from Jimenez filed last March, Senior District Judge Denis R. Hurley also fined Lohan's attorney $1,500 for sanctionable plagiarism and false representation. Pitbull's camp had argued that lawyer Stephanie Ovadia had cribbed portions of her opposition to the rapper's motion to dismiss the case from online legal sources and newspaper articles.

Lohan filed suit against Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Afrojack, J Records, Sony Music Entertainment, RCA Music Group, Polo Grounds Music and related parties nearly a year and a half ago, both objecting to the negative connotation of the "locked up like Lindsay Lohan" line and claiming that she should have been compensated for the use of her name in the song.

One Direction's 3-D Film Brings Fans To 'The Toilet With Us, No Lie'

Much like their video for 'One Way or Another,' the guys will take fans everywhere in their 3-D movie

One Direction are showing fans everything in their 3-D film, hitting theaters in August. And we mean everything.

Shortly after winning the Global Success Award and performing charity track "One Way or Another" at Wednesday's Brit Awards, the guys opened up about how open they're getting in the movie.

"We're shooting the movie tonight," said Niall Horan at a press conference, as Fuse reported."It's actually just been in the toilet with us, no lie. That is coming out August 30 and it's going to be very all-access, all-areas."

"That's when you can see us in the toilet," Liam Payne added.

In addition to filming their summer blockbuster, the guys took fans along as they traveled the globe in the video for "One Way or Another." And, since that clips already let fans take a shower and a bath with the Niall, perhaps Directioners shouldn't be too surprised by all the access they'll be getting in the movie.

"We're just massively honored to be a part of it and we're just loving the fact that we get to do something amazing for such an amazing cause," Zayn Malik said of the tune, which was recorded to help the U.K. charity Comic Relief.

It's a busy time for 1D. In addition to the new video and their world tour, which kicks off on Friday at London's O2 Arena, the guys have been busy recording new music.

10 Most Cringe-Worthy Star Wars Moments

$
0
0
Star Wars, as a franchise in all its forms, has had its ups and downs; the epic highs of the Empire Strikes Back, to the “worst thing every made by a human” Attack of the Clones, and let us not forget that ill-judged Holiday Special.

There are numerous cringe-inducing moments associated with Star Wars, hough most of this list will be made up from Attack of the Clones, because it’s too hard not to punish such an awful film. This should not be surprising given its reputation as the worst in the series. One of the biggest criticisms of George Lucas is that he writes awkward dialogue and is poor with actors. I have included much from the prequels, though all his films are represented on the list (even Empire still has a moment that has made the list).

5. When Twins Kiss – Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

This is a slow-burn cringe moment, upon first viewing of Empire. It is a footnote in the development of the relationship between Leia and Han. We, as the viewer, still think that may be Luke and Leia could be the couple here, and Han will remain solo (sorry).

After the parentage of Luke is revealed later in the film, and then it is confirmed that Luke and Leia are twins. This becomes a super creepy and very cringe-worthy piece of cinema. The incest metre goes into overdrive, and now as an adult I have to fast forward it. Leia makes it worst with this line in Return of the Jedi, “I know. Somehow, I’ve always known!” Hold on, excuse me? So many questions and one awkward family reunion.

4. The Very Awkward & Creepy “Romance” Scenes On Naboo – Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

And we are back to Attack of the Clones. While most romance films can be sappy and boring. The guy at least often has some game, and you can believe that he earned the girl in the end. You are happy for him, as you see the relationship grow from a friendship to dating, or from mutual dislike to raw passion. There is a usual a strong link and arc presented on screen. In the romance arc of Attack of the Clones there is none of that… is just plain creepy! We even get some “creepy sex looks” from Anakin.

Poor dialogue and acting aside. This is one strange relationship. Anakin is always just staring at Padmé like he wants to rape her. This in fact makes her visibly uncomfortable, she even says so in the film. There is no chemistry between the two actors at all. Now let’s look at the dialogue,

“Anakin: From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven’t thought of you. And now that I’m with you again… I’m in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you – I can’t breathe. I’m haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating…hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me… what can I do? I will do anything you ask. [pause] If you are suffering as much as I am, please, tell me.”

Yet, somehow she falls for him. I have no idea how that works. The climax of this “love” story is the kiss on Naboo. Anakin begins saying to Padmé that, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and irritating and it gets everywhere. Everything here is soft and smooth.”

Everything about these two feels wrong. Anakin is shown to be a self-centred and annoying prat who has no concept of how women work, or even how to talk to a woman. I am still puzzled about how this happened, why does Padmé loves him. He literally gave her no reason to do so in any of their time together, instead he gave her insane rants, ramblings about being a dictator and sex stares.

3. Greedo Shoots First – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (Special Edition)

Yes. The fact that has been changed is a big deal. I ask, is a good guy ending up as a good guy, as interesting as a ruthless smuggler ending up as a good guy. No! Lucas messed with the whole character’s back-story to retroactively appeal to younger audiences. Lucas may have actually missed the point of his own story; it doesn’t matter where you come from. It is what you do that defines you as a hero.

This a so cringe worth because of the poor editing, it looks shameful and dumb. It completely takes me out of the movie and kills all the tension that is meant to be in this scene. Also, this establishes Greedo as the worse bounty hunter ever! He misses at point blank range!

2. “Anakin, You’re Breaking My Heart” – Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

I don’t want to labour this point anymore, but this is the second worst piece of dialogue in Episode III. This scene suffers for all the same issues as the romance scenes on Naboo in Attack of the Clones. This time, however, we are less invested, the dialogue is worse and Anakin is creepier. I cannot this spell it out anymore.

1. Jar-Jar Binks – Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

“Mesa cause one, two-y little bitty axadentes, huh? Yud say boom de gasser, den crashin der bosses heyblibber, den banished?”- Jar Jar Binks

The above profound quote and video should highlight all the issues with this character. He is an annoying, and frankly racist character that only offends. The audience is given no reason to like him, he causes chaos everywhere he goes and he ruins every scene he is in by his presence in it.

He is not funny in any way so the character has no purpose. His shtick is quickly worn out, and by the end of Episode 1 you are exhausted at just how stupid this character is. In the sequel he is merciful trimmed out and rarely shown. The madness however continues, Binks is the most incompetent member of his species, and yet becomes a Senator on Coruscant. What? Why?

The screen time of this character is a total waste and unnecessary to the film as a whole. The Phantom Edit proved this. He is still the sole thing that embarrasses me about being a Star Wars fan. I cannot justify him, nor will I. This is as bad as the “Bat-Credit Card” in Batman & Robin.

Jason Momoa asks for more cash for "Guardians of the Galaxy" role; Marvel now testing other actors

Though news recently broke that Jason Momoa had been offered the role of Drax the Destroyer in the upcoming Marvel film Guardians Of The Galaxy, it looks like he's now on the outs. According to tweets from the Latino Review, Marvel has rebuffed Momoa's request for a higher payout for the role, and are now testing other actors.

Momoa's situation recalls the replacement of Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2, after contract negotiations between Marvel and the actor broke down. Guardians director James Gunn has stated in the past that the film is "not cast-dependent. We could make the movie with unknowns if we wanted to."

Guardians Of The Galaxy is slated for release on August 1, 2014.

10 Awesome Actors Who Don’t Get Enough Credit

$
0
0
Actors come in all degrees and levels of prestige. As movie-goers, we hope that the greatest ones claw their way to the top and get the great roles and scripts they deserve. Many times, this happens if the audience can be patient and wait for the next wave of talent to catch their break.

In some cases, however, actors don’t get the praise they deserve. This isn’t to say they are unknown, or unappreciated. Many of them have strong fanbases, and do excellent and regular work, which is why they can be known as “awesome.” This also shouldn’t be taken to mean that these actors are flawless, some of them have some truly regrettable pieces under their belt.

At the same time, many of these fantastic actors are not given the full credit they deserve for their performances. They remain less glorified, and audiences should be reminded that some actors who are not at the pinnacle of popularity are still brilliant in their own right.

This list, as subjective as it may be, will cover a small fraction of those actors who, while often acknowledged as wonderful, are often taken for granted and not always represented as how talented they really are…

Eddie Redmayne

Why He’s Awesome…

Although certainly on his way to being greatly praised thanks to Les Miserables, Eddie Redmayne has been acting as leading men as well as secondary characters on screen for a little more than a decade. He has the boyish attitude and look to play sensitive and emotional men, but the power to play tough and flawed characters that hold their own.

He brings the necessary emotional turmoil to the role of Marius, torn between the revolution mentality, social obligation, and loyalty and love for those around him. It makes him a great character to watch work through trials and tribulations, a brilliant combination of passion, whimsy, and emotional complexity.

Yet He Isn’t Given Credit For…

Breaking out on stage as Viola in an all-male production of Twelfth Night, Redmayne has since shed the skirts and donned everything from noble livery to tuxedos, from a cowboy hat to monk’s robes. He has played would be assassins in two films about Elizabeth I, both socially inept and suave young men from multiple time periods, and has taken controversial roles playing unstable men as the incestuous Antony Baekeland in Savage Grace or predatory Eddie Kreezer from Hick.

Although he does not necessarily have the naturally commanding physique and voice of some other leading men, Redmayne acts with bare and accessible emotions, and has a quiet charisma and presence that makes even his most timid characters dynamic. Although him gaining recognition and being labelled a “rising star” is good, it is also good to remember that Marius or even his role in My Week With Marilyn isn’t the sudden beginning of Redmayne, he didn’t just start to rise.

He has consistently brought the same power and likability to his work over the years, all of which he certainly deserves credit for.

Cillian Murphy

Why He Is Awesome…

Cillian Murphy has worked alongside many great actors, and manages to keep pace with them and sometimes even steal the spotlight. He has a reputation for playing sociopaths from the Scarecrow in the Dark Knight Trilogy and Jack Ripner from Red Eye, with other sinister roles dotting his filmography, and he plays these characters in a way that makes audiences both horrified and enthralled.

His dark voice and unique features make him ideal for characters with an edge of danger, and he makes them more than just fiendish, he makes them compelling, likable, and even sexy, in a very grim sense.

Yet He Isn’t Given Credit For…

Those roles are only a tiny fraction of the talent this man shows. Murphy has explored the intricacies of conflicting gender identity in roles from movies like Breakfast on Pluto or Peacock, bringing a plain sincerity to performances that make his true sexuality and gender entirely irrelevant.

He can also play the “normal” leading male parts, such as a Jim from 28 Days Later or Damien from The Wind That Shakes the Barley. Despite his reputation for specializing in sinister or quiet characters, Murphy can be amusing, such as the black humor he brought to the deadbeat Michael McCrea, a man on a crazy caper as he flees from loan-sharks in the film Perrier’s Bounty.

Murphy is not just a strangely pretty face with only two acting settings-sinister but intriguing or a mild secondary character – he’s got the potential to be a strong, gallant “mainstream” leading male, if the industry would let him.

Laura Linney

Why She’s Awesome…

Laura Linney has always been able to keep up with the men in her movies. She plays commanding women, women so independent they can sometimes come off as cold and detached. She’s given Richard Gere, the onscreen lawyer of all onscreen lawyers, a run for his money, she’s played an overprotective mother of Rupert Grint, an overbearing mother in The Nanny Diaries, and an FBI agent, to name just a few.

She represents poise and control, and her characters usually aren’t afraid to use their feminine wiles to get their way. Although not entirely likable in many of her roles because of this, Laura Linney does stand as an example of composed women in an industry where women are often depicted as runner ups to men as far as cold calculation or level headed thinking is concerned.

Yet She Doesn’t Get Credit For…

Linney’s certainly well respected, and is attractive, but she does not have the completely drop dead gorgeous look of many women in film. Combined with the cold nature of many of her roles, this helps solidify the idea that she is “the practical woman”, not the love interest, and not necessarily someone for normal woman to completely identify with or idolize. Which is a shame.

She can show the suppressed pain of letting go of personal goals, such as in Love Actually. She showed the strain placed on a wife trying to keep up with her husband’s goals in John Adams. Or, she can just be a woman trying to navigate the trials of life with a smile, such as The Big C. She is probably never going to play the soft and delicate female perfectly.

But despite what Hollywood wants people to believe, not all women have a soft, trembling, overly emotional and tear soaked center that just needs to be unlocked by the right man. Not all women have to (or get to) burst into tears and run through the rain for love, or fall into the arms of their prince at the end. Most of Linney’s characters, like most actual women, don’t have the time to wait, however subtlety, for a man to swoop in and solve their problems.

They have lives of their own and jobs that they are just as eager to do, and as capable of doing, as any man. Laura Linney should get credit not only for her talent, but for representing that type of independent competent woman and not simply be labelled the “practical one.”

David Thewlis

Why He’s Awesome…

Just to get it out of the way, it is true that David Thewlis played a fantastic Remus Lupin. He can be given a slightly frazzled academic appearance while still being rugged enough to keep up with Sirius Black’s shenanigans. His ability to dress up and drab down has served him well throughout his career.

He’s made appearances in recent films, such as the sour land lord in War Horse, as an unflattering rendition of William Cecil in the questionable film Anonymous, and he’s been playing these sorts of excellent supporting characters for a number of years.

He’s done kindly and quirky advisers to spiteful antagonists, and several degrees in between, as any actor worth his salt should be able to do. He brings a developed feel to even the seemingly insignificant background characters he adopts.

Yet Isn’t Given Credit For…

This man is a jack of all trades too often stuck playing second fiddle. In addition to his light or mild roles, he can adopt a vindictive personality that makes him a brilliant villain. He plays a venomous gangster in Gangster No. 1, and the aloof and negligent, as well as villainous, Father in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Both his good and bad character personalities translate well to main character roles, such as the cheeky, contrary, and pernicious character Johnny in the film Naked from 1993. Despite acting on par with colleagues like Gary Oldman and Malcolm McDowell, and proving himself to be both a main character actor in addition to diverse secondary roles, David Thewlis remains quietly in the background as his peers are (not undeservedly) raised to great heights and praise.

Clea DuVall

Why She’s Awesome…

Clea Duvall has played a number of characters over more than a decade of work, specializing in tomboys and opinionated women. She played a tormented carnival worker Sofie in Carnivale, and the naive Georgina from Girl, Interrupted. More recently, she played the girlfriend of Sarah Paulson’s character in the popular series American Horror Story: Asylum, and she appeared in Ben Affleck’s sensational film Argo.

She’s another “oh, that person” actor who appears in movies that range from mainstream films to smaller productions, and makes cameo appearances in TV series like CSI, Bones, and Heroes, but has never quite gotten past being a side character actress that can be dependable for good work without overshadowing the main cast.

Yet She Isn’t Given Credit For…

Like many actors recognized as good to have, but not sensational, Clea DuVall doesn’t have a niche. She plays delicate to badass characters in a wide range of productions partly because she hasn’t been labelled as having that “x” characteristic that makes her the go to woman for a role. This leaves her circling, waiting for the opportunity to break out.

It’s unfortunate that she, and other actors like her, aren’t given credit for being diverse in their roles, overlooked because they are not the blazing star the crowds focus on. From troubled naive Sophie and Wendy Peyser to her hard as nails character from the short lived Virtuality, DuVall has proven her ability to move beyond side characters to main characters in an ensemble cast.

Hopefully DuVall can find her stride and move on to straight forward main characters, but if not, she should get the credit she deserves for being an awesome diverse actress who’s enjoyable to watch on screen, niche or no niche.

We still don't know exactly who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in the upcoming sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," but J.J. Abrams has revealed that, whether he's Khan or not, the actor won't be the film's only villain.

The director confirmed that the beloved Klingons will appear in the film to terrorize Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the Enterprise crew.

"Their role in this is definitely that of adversary, and you'll see how that plays out," he told MTV.

The Klingons began as a purely villainous race in the original series, but grew into Federation allies during laters series such as "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine," but Abrams isn't counting on new viewers to have absorbed all that previous lore. "You don't need to know any preexisting stories to enjoy this film," the director explained.

Producers of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are pulling out all the stops in their bid to spice things up in the 90210, and a surefire way to achieve that aim is their plan to lure Brandi Glanville‘s arch nemesis, LeAnn Rimes onto the hit show, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

“Producers have approached LeAnn multiple times about joining the cast and have been pursuing her even harder in recent weeks,” a source tells Radar. “Viewers are fascinated by Brandi, how she’s dealt with her marriage being broken up by LeAnn, and the pain that continues to cause her and her family.

“Executives at Bravo have told LeAnn that appearing on the show would be a great opportunity for her to get her side of the story out and no longer be seen in a negative light. However, she has continued to shut the offers down, claiming she doesn’t want the added drama in her life, that she has a flourishing music career, and that she just doesn’t need to do a reality television show.”

A significant number of the existing Beverly Hills cast are facing the ax from the show as producers put their current hiring and firing plans into action.

“The only cast members guaranteed to come back for the fourth season are Brandi and Lisa Vanderpump,” a show insider previously told Radar. “It’s no secret that Adrienne Maloof and Taylor Armstrong were already on the outs – but the other ladies, Kim and Kyle Richards, and Yolanda Foster are also on the chopping block.”

The single mom divorced Cibrian, who is the father of her two young sons, in 2011 and months later Rimes, 30, went on to marry him. The two women have been embroiled in a nasty feud ever since with both constantly exchanging subtle insults via social networking site Twitter.

BRYAN SINGER WILL FIX THE X-MEN

$
0
0

One of the big questions that fans have about Bryan Singer’s upcoming return to the cinematic X-Men universe, X-Men: Days of Future Past, is will this new film mean a return of some of the characters that we lost in the Brett Ratner directed X-Men: Last Stand? Specifically Scott Summers/Cyclops and Jean Grey. In general, there has been speculation about the changes that Singer may want to make to the choices that were made in that film. The director has said that he will not be ignoring any of the previous films, but there is the possibility of an alternate universe present in the Days of Future Past storyline which creates all kinds of interesting possibilities.

We’re going to go into a brief plot description of the Days of Future Past comic for a moment, so if you don’t want to know, skip ahead.

For those who are unfamiliar, the X-Men: Days of Future Past comic introduces a dystopian alternative future where mutants have been captured and imprisoned in internment camps. Adult Kate Pryde transfers her consciousness into her younger self, Kitty Pryde, in order to warn the X-Men and get them to stop the event that triggers the rise of the anti-mutant movement. At the conclusion of the story, two timelines are formed, one where the dystopian future remains and one where the errors of the past are corrected. Given the unique/different nature of this film, in terms of the combination of the original X-Men cast with the First Class cast, we are assuming that the "future" will be the present day with the X-Men original cast and that Kitty Pryde will either physically travel back in time to the First Class time period, or send her consciousness into another persons body. Alternate timelines, and time travel in general, can be tricky for storytellers, but they also open the door to changing things that may have been previously established in canon.

End potential spoilers.

We were able to speak to Singer recently about his upcoming family film Jack the Giant Slayer. During our conversation, he revealed that Peter Dinklage’s X-Men: Days of Future Past character is in fact not CGI-based, as we revealed earlier. We also touched on some of the things he hopes to achieve with Days of Future Past, as well as a bit on the history of the franchise.

IGN: One thing that’s interesting about the alternate universe/timeline in Days of Future Past is that it could potentially give you the opportunity to revisit things that happened in the third film in terms of characters and endings that you might like to see changed.

Bryan Singer: You mean, what you’re politely saying is, “fix s**t.” Is that what you’re saying? That’s what I’m hearing. [Laughing]

IGN: [Laughing] Maybe…

Singer: There’s going to be a little of that, a few things I can repair.

IGN: Are fans going to be pleased with these things you will be repairing?

Singer: I think so, I think so, yes.

As far as X-Men: The Last Stand is concerned, Singer acknowledged that, “it’s a very difficult thing, jumping into someone else’s franchise,” saying, “Brett Ratner did it with mine and you’re held up to a standard, particularly if people really like what the originator did, you’re held up to a very tough standard jumping into someone else's franchise.”
IGN: Do you have regrets about what Brett Ratner did with Last Stand?

Singer:It would have been nice to have done the third one, but I really wanted to have the Superman [Returns] experience. And I’ve never really talked about it before, but there were negotiating issues that were there. I didn’t fully have X-Men 3 in my mind and I had this take on Superman and suddenly that was easy. That was an easier deal, it took three days and we were ready to go. So I made that move and it pissed off certain people – we’re all good now. But you know, maybe I wouldn’t have ended up with X-Men: First Class and where I’m sitting today making this epic combination of casts. So in the end, I’m glad I had my Superman experience. It was a little awkward for me to see X-Men 3, obviously. In fact I was so emotionally nervous about it that a person -- who shall remain nameless -- brought me to a building in the middle of the night in Los Angeles and sat me in front of the computer and showed me the movie. Completely against the law, long before it was finished, just so I could be prepared. And I watched it reel by reel on the computer. You know Brett and I are good friends, I actually saw him in London last week, and I don’t know if I’ve ever told him that frankly, because I just kept it to myself. But I just needed to see the movie so that when I actually went to the theatre and saw it, it wasn’t shocking to me or disturbing. Seeing a Superman movie will be very different. I’m actually very excited to see Zack Snyder’s Superman because it’ll be so different from mine and that’s quite distant. But today I don’t have regrets because I’m sitting here doing this amazing hybrid, so maybe it was all meant to be.

IGN: As a fan of this world too, though, do you want to see Scott and Jean return? Because it’s what everyone is thinking. That we want to see them return, you know?

Singer: Who wouldn’t? Who wouldn’t? [Laughing] That’s all I can say.

IGN: [Laughing] Fair enough.

The good news is that we’re all on the same page!

IGN: What is the balance between the first classers and the original trilogy actors in Days of Future Past?

Singer: The movie takes place at different times. It deals with, I don't want to say time travel, but time displacement. A form of time travel which is steeped more in the X-Men [mythos].

IGN: There was a real distinctive tone created in First Class, that was sort of in the vein of a film from that era, how are you going to integrate that into this one?

Singer: The majority of it...or that part of it, takes place in the early 70’s, 1973. So Nixon is a character, and there will be different styles and automobiles. And there will be some futuristic, as well as retro, technology which you haven’t seen. There are science fiction aspects of the movie, and then there’s some retro science fiction that the X-Men films haven’t had quite yet. So we’re exploring that, which will be fun. And there’s an attitude [difference]. We discover our characters, particularly the younger characters, at a different place in their lives. Every character you discover in this movie is in a completely different place than you’ve ever seen, emotionally, and it's about them moving through that. Hilarity ensues!

IGN: When you think about it, it’s possible to come out of this movie with three separate branches of the X-Men franchise: the First Class time period, the original X-Men time period that you created and now the alternate timeline/universe that X-Men: Days of Future Past will delve into. The alternate universe timeline could exist on its own. Is that a possibility coming out of this?

Singer: Yes, I think so, but I think it’s even bigger than that. I think that if you really examine the X-Men universe it’s every bit as big as the Marvel universe. There are lesser characters, but if you take certain characters there are a myriad of films you could make, and stories you could tell, with these characters as individuals. Wolverine being one of them, and that’s currently being done. But you could really mine this universe. I’m glad to return to it and I’d like to get more involved in it because it hasn’t really been orchestrated – somewhat with the Wolverine pictures – but I think there is a lot more that one can do.

IGN: Have you sort of started to map out plans for a Disney/Marvel movies approach to the X-Men franchise?

Singer: It’s just something we’re thinking about. Really my big focus was this movie. Because it’s really massive, and we’re going to start shooting soon. But we’re talking, [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner and I, and we’ll see.

IGN: I know you love to announce on Twitter. When do you think there will be announcements about the rest of the casting and who Peter Dinklage is playing and those kinds of things?

Singer: I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m not sure... I’ll see how it goes. Some people will figure stuff out on their own and then it just gets out there. I tweet very impulsively. You know, just when I have a moment in the day, or when something like [Peter Dinklage’s casting] happens. You know when they call me and say, ‘Okay, Peter’s deal is done.’ I wish I could tweet every conversation, but when I tweet it has to be an official thing. When I tweet it it’s for real. There’s another person that we’re negotiating with right now, so hopefully that will work out and they’ll be a part of the movie as well. And there are some new roles, younger roles that will appear in the movie. My tweets are just to be connective to fans and they’re impulsive. Sometimes they’re silly - or spelled wrong. I just have to make sure I don’t tweet when I’m drunk or anything. [Laughing] My biggest fear is that I have the phone, it’s right there…You gotta be careful because you have this direct line in your pocket to lots of people. But I think it’s a great tool. I wish I had it on Valkyrie, for instance. Because there was a lot of snarky scrutiny that was completely inaccurate and if I had Twitter I could have just addressed it. Like when they were saying, ‘Oh my god, they’re coming back to the United States for reshoots, the movie is in trouble!’ I could have said, ‘No, we’re coming back to the United States cause there are no deserts in Germany and I have a sequence that takes place in a desert.” And that would have been such an easy tweet – ‘No, the movie is fine.’ So when people panic that you’re doing something, wrong or something’s wrong with the movie, you can either not address it, or address it without needing to call a press conference.

After earning rank on VIBE's Top 20 International EDM Festivals, Melt! 2013 impresses further with a new installment of all-star talent performing July 19th-July 21st lineup. Perched high atop an airy peninsula in Germany, Thom Yorke's latest project Atoms Of Peace will join a sonic slew of acts, including The Knife, Alt-J, James Blake, Solomon, Flying Lotus, Azealia Banks, Disclosure and many others at the Ferropolis site; where enormous hulking machines tower over partygoers, illuminated by the festival’s dizzying light-shows.

Azealia Banks just made her schedule more busy as the young hip hop starlet will be performing at the 2013 Melt! Festival in Ferropolis, Germany. Azealia Banks will hit the stage sometime between July 19th and July 21st along with other acts such as The Knife, James Blake, Solomon, Flying Lotus and many others at the Ferropolis site; where enormous hulking machines tower over partygoers, illuminated by the festival’s dizzying light-shows.

Atoms Of Peace is a five-piece project comprised of Thom Yorke, of Radiohead fame, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco and Red Hot Chili Pepper's bass player, Flea, all of whom initially went into the rehearsal studio just to bring Yorke's solo album Eraser to the stage. However, the five musicians' creative energy and chemistry was too massive to simply erase. "Atoms is an ongoing and open ended project, where it leads I know not for certain, which is what is nice about it," Yorke says of the project's future plans.
