Sarah Jessica Parker covers Marie Claire, says she's "not a feminist" because she doesn't "qualify"

Sarah Jessica Parker is on the cover of Marie Claire's September issue, and in her cover story she shared some thoughts on feminism.

"I am not a feminist. I don't think I qualify. I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don't even want to separate it anymore. I'm so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally."

She also shared her thoughts on the wage gap, "I would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender."

While she's not a feminist, she says she appreciates other actresses who talk about women's issues. "Listen, Jennifer Lawrence deserves every bit as much as her male counterpart. It's indisputable. Emma Watson is an amazing young woman, and it's important for her to talk about women's issues. She isn't concerned about herself. Women are paying the bills, getting it done, getting the kids here and there. The more we address that, we are all going to be better."

Cara Delevingne talks about being suicidal as a teenager in Esquire cover story

0
0

Cara is the September 2016 cover star of Esquire, and in her interview, she got frank about wanting to kill herself during her teen years when she had depression.

She says it started with the struggle of dealing with her mother's own manic depression and frequent hospitalizations. When she was eight, she declared she was going on a hunger strike to until she got the truth about her mother's absence."I didn't feel like I had any control of anything in my life so I just kind of went on a food strike. I was like, 'I'm not going to eat until someone tells me where she is.'"

By the time she was sixteen, things had gotten even more serious. “I think I properly started dealing with depression when I was about 16 when all the stuff with my family started to make sense and came to the surface. I’m very good at repressing emotion and seeming fine. As a kid I felt like I had to be good and I had to be strong because my mum wasn’t. So, when it got to being a teenager and all the hormones and the pressure and wanting to do well at school — for my parents, not for me — I had a mental breakdown. I was suicidal. I couldn’t deal with it any more. I realized how lucky and privileged I was, but all I wanted to do was die. I felt so guilty because of that and hated myself because of that, and then it’s a cycle. I didn’t want to exist anymore. I wanted for each molecule of my body to disintegrate. I wanted to die. I would run off to the woods and smoke a pack of cigarettes and then I would smash my head so hard into a tree because I just wanted to knock myself out.

Jared Leto: Hollywood's Antigay Discrimination Must End

0
0

In a recent interview to GQ, Leto said he doesn't think a gay leading man would have the same opportunities as a straight leading man and that it shouldn't be this way.

Calls Hollywood a very conservative business.

The articles notes that there is a lack of gay male actors in leading-man roles, this summer the only one being Zachary Quinto in Star Trek Beyond. And there are several reasons for that: gay actors are still afraid to come out of the closet because of casting discrimination; studios are failing to showcase any LGBT characters in big-budget movies, this way cutting down job opportunities for LGBT actors and also a missed opportunity to broadcast acceptance; and when these roles do exist, they usually go to straight-identifying actors.

Leto won an Oscar for portraying the role of a transgender woman in 'Dallas Buyers Club.' Out of the dozens of actors (list here) who have been nominated for gay roles at the Oscars, only one, Ian McKellen, was an out gay man.

ONTD Original: 1997, A year of one hit wonders

0
0
Previous Posts: 1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001-2009

19 years ago (help), artists like Meredith Brooks, Sister Hazel and Mark Morrison were topping the charts. The artists who created their 1997 smash hits were never able to replicate the success. But for us 90's babies, the music never fails to bring the nostalgia. Let's take a look at some of the best one hit wonders of 1997!
Disclaimer: These lists are based on U.S. Billboard Hot 100 only. Sorry to those who disagree with certain choices!

Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack

This was THE highest charting one hit wonder of the year and with good reason. The club smash made Morrison the first black male solo artist to reach no. 1 in the UK in the '90s. The song skyrocketed to no. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. This was all a big success for the inmate-turned-singer. However, the same year the song made it big, he was given a community service order for attempting to take a stun-gun onto a plane. It was discovered Morrison was paying somebody else to complete his order on his behalf and was sentenced to a year in jail.

Meredith Brooks - Bitch

Meredith delivered a challenging song to swallow for a PC pop world at the time, but this peaked at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a grammy. Now in her mid to late 50's, she’s a producer and released a children’s album in 2007.

OMC - How Bizarre

Pop duo OMC scored a huge international hit with "How Bizarre." The song peaked at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. A follow-up hit charted in their homeland but made no impact abroad. Pauly Fuemana died in 2010 at the age of 40.

Chumbawamba - Tubthumping

Chumbawamba formed in England in the early '80s and wrote intensely political songs that fused folk, punk and dance with just about every other genre of music. In 1997 they released "Tubthumping," which is basically about getting hammered. It blew up worldwide, and turned the group into celebrities. After peaking at no. 6, They never had a follow-up hit in America, though they still have a fanbase.

Shawn Colvin - Sunny Came Home

Shawn is a super talented artist but only one of her songs had mainstream success. "Sunny Came Home” from her fifth album, peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. She has been nominated for 10 grammys and has one 3. She continues to work on music as far as I know.

B-Rock, The Bizz - My Baby Daddy

"That's just my baby daddy" used a Miami bass soundbed to illuminate a humorous take on the back and forth that goes on between men and women who have kids by other men. The song peaked at no. 10 on the Billbaord Hot 100. But problems with their label, LaFace Records, led to B-Rock & The Bizz never releasing a follow-up single or debut album.

Sister Hazel - All For You

This is one of those songs that you know all the lyrics to when you didn't try to learn them. Some might not consider this band a one hit wonder, but this is their only mainstream hit. The song peaked at no. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band continues to make music.

Tonic - If You Could Only See

"If You Could Only See," a song written to his parents when they disapproved of his older girlfriend, peaked at no. 11 on the Hot 100. The band's status as a one hit wonder is not all that surprising. The song is generic 90s rock that hasn't really aged well.

Freak Nasty - Da' Dip

Freak Nasty's only real hit was "Da' Dip," which dropped in 1996. The song peaked at no. 15 on the Hot 100 in 1997. The Miami bass track implored its listeners, "I put my hand up on your hip, when I dip you dip we dip." And we did THAT!

Amber - This Is Your Night

When thinking of 90s dance music, does it get any more nostalgic than this? Nope! This song brings back way too many memories and was made even more popular in 1998's movie "Night at the Roxbury." The song peaked at no. 24 on the Hot 100.

H O N O R A B L E | M E N T I O N S
- Gina G, "Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit"
- Imani Coppola, "Legend of a Cowgirl"
- Duncan Sheik, "Barely Breathing"
- White Town, "Your Woman"
- DJ Kool, "Let Me Clear My Throat"
- Natalie Imbruglia, "Torn"
