Johnny Depp to Give Shakespeare a Modern Twist for New TV Series

$

Johnny Depp is developing a scripted TV series based on the plays of William Shakespeare, according to Deadline.com. The Oscar nominee's production company, Infinitum Nihil, is partnering with Scandinavian-based Yellow Bird Productions and writer-producer Tom Fontana to bring a modern take on the Bard's plays. The show will build on existing characters and plots from several of Shakespeare's most notable works.

Randall Fontana will write the project and Infinitum Nihil, which is run by Depp’s sister Christi Dembrowski, will executive produce along with Tom Fontana and Yellow Bird. Yellow Bird produced The Millennium trilogy, the original feature films based on Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo books.

Plenty of Shakespeare texts have already been adapted into modern movies like William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, O and 10 Things I Hate About You. We're excited to see what other works Depp might tackle!

Finally, After 8 Seasons, South Africa's Version Of 'Idol' Gets Its First Black Winner

So what took so long? After all, we're talking about a country in which roughly 80 percent of the population is black, yet it's taken 8 seasons in 10 years (the show debuted on South African TV network M-Net in 2002) for a black South African winner to be crowned.

Well, let's start with decades of apartheid which enforced racial segregation, curtailed the rights of blacks, and maintained white supremacy, creating deep, and still lingering imbalances in wealth that made the country one of the most unequal in the world.

And for that reason... as the program has long and continues to be broadcast on South Africa’s M-Net network (via DStv), a subscription-based private satellite channel, the subscriber base has largely been white, because blacks in the country haven't been able afford the necessary subscription fees (although that's gradually changing, as more black people are able to afford luxuries like satellite TV); and since winners are selected by votes from audiences, with a predominantly white subscription base, it should be maybe no surprise that the winners selected each of the last 7 seasons have been predominantly white (there has been 1 mixed-race winner).

The show has most certainly had black contestants, and while some of them would make it to the final rounds, the crown has unfortunately eluded them.

Even the judges noticed this trend, and one of them lashed out against it at the end of season 6, when a white rock musician beat out a black singer by almost twice as many votes; Mara Louw, a judge at the time, said: "Lloyd [the black singer] should have won... Blacks do not have access to DStv. This excludes a sizable chunk of South Africans from the competition. Whites vote for whites and blacks are disadvantaged... I am sick and tired of being politically correct. The whites refuse to vote for blacks."

As the New York Times notes, change is happening, as M-Net’s audience, which was once mostly white, is now starting to closely reflect the country's demographic, despite that fact that poverty is still a major societal problem, within the majority black population.

"More and more black people have actually been entering ‘Idols,’ and more and more black people have been getting further along in the competition, and finally this year we have a black winner... This year’s winner was voted for because he was the best. But it is also reflective of the changing social fabric of South Africa," said Yolisa Phahle, an executive at M-Net.

But it doesn't end there; even with what appears to be progress, there's still the matter of the kind of music the contestants on the program sing - mostly American top 40 music; some would prefer that contestants instead borrow from the country's own local popular varied music styles and musicians.

"Every time I hear these people singing another Mariah Carey song I get tired... It is really a cultural catastrophe that we are not leveraging the stuff we are very good at,” said writer/photographer Victor Dlamini.

"It is not our music... We already have our own R&B and house in our own languages. Why would we sing in English?" added Phindile Maseko, a 35-year-old social worker.

Baby steps I suppose...

Oh, and by the way, this year's winner of South Africa's Idols, and the first black winner, is Khaya Mthethwa; one of the tracks he performed during his winning showcase was Nicki Minaj’s Super Bass, a song he had reportedly only just heard for the first time the day he performed it. The judges were blown away.

And how's Mr. Mthethwa - son of preachers from Durban, who grew up singing gospel music in church - reacting to all of this?

"It saddens me that so many years after our democracy we still have to racialize things," he said.

Britain's hottest TV stars film tastefully sexy rap music video

The stars showcase their musical prowess with an artistic new video.

Celebrity Big Brother star Georgia Salpa and star of The Bachelor Spencer Matthews and Made in Chelsea Hugo Taylor star in the video for Clement Marfo and The Frontline's new song, Last Night.

The reality television personalities looked slightly lost as the London based hip-hop/rock group turned the set into a hedonistic party awash with alcohol and scantily clad women.

Spencer, 24, and Hugo, 26, are well acquainted with throwing an elaborate bash, but the well groomed boys had probably never seen anything quite like this before.

The duo, and Georgia, were special guests of honour in the music video as alcohol and booze surrounded them as they sat casually on a sofa.

Spencer has hardly been a convincing actor on Made In Chelsea, but he didn't have to stretch his thespian skills too hard for this role either.

Spencer spent the entire video sat on a leather sofa next Salpa, while looking handsomely into the camera and watching the carnage ensue.

His wing-man Hugo looked more at home as he took a back seat in proceedings with his trademark facial hair hiding his school boy grin.

Lead singer Clement was the real centre of attention as he downed liquid from a large bottle of Crystal Head Vodka before pouring it down the throat of one of his band mates.

Greek-Irish model Georgia, 27, had no real direction other than to sit with a bottle of Armand De Brignac Champagne and look pretty, which she achieved.

Near naked girls can also be seen riding a pony while Clement took Crystal Head Vodka shots from the large chest of lead love interest Emily Florence Shaw.

While Spencer sipped on his glass of Armand De Brignac and appeared comfortable with the scene, Hugo watched on open mouthed in what appeared to be both shock and awe.

The raunchy video descends into debauchery as it ends with at least seven lingerie wearing girls joining Clement on a bed as he concludes his Wild Night.

Clement Marfo & The Frontline are a seven-piece diverse collective from South London led by the charismatic Clement.

His hard-hitting flow is complimented by the multi-talents of vocalist Kojo, Dion on drums, Jonny on bass, Rich and Dan on guitar and the sole female of the collective, Stacey, on keyboards and vocals.

After the video shoot had wrapped, some of the stars expressed their excitement at the project via Twitter with Hugo saying: '@ClementMarfo love the new track, can't wait to see the video. Happy birthday bud!'

Georgia said: '@ClementMarfo fun shoot today, hope the rest of the day goes well.'

Clement Marfo said about the song: 'As a media geek, I was more interested in the toys (technology) than the naked ladies walking around on set but all in all, I had way too much fun for what was meant to be work. The perks of a being a music artist.'

Taylor Swift : You can’t kidnap a grown man!

Taylor Swift has cleared up bizarre reports suggesting she kidnapped rumored boyfriend Conor Kennedy, insisting, “You can’t kidnap a grown man!”

The singer was said to have been missing her man so much, she flew him on a private jet to visit her in Nashville, Tenn., against his will.

Swift insists the speculation is completely unfounded and demonstrates why she refuses to read about herself in the tabloids.

She tells Rolling Stone magazine, “How did I kidnap him? You can’t kidnap a grown man! These are serious accusations, now! It’s an interesting way to spin something into a story. See, this is why I don’t read stuff.”

However, the “Love Story” hit maker, who posed for the cover of the magazine’s latest issue, insists she is all for falling in love without reservation.

She adds, “The way I look at love is you have to follow it, and fall hard, if you fall hard. You have to forget about what everyone else thinks. It has to be an us-against-the-world mentality. You have to make it work by prioritizing it, and by falling in love really fast, without thinking too hard. If I think too hard about a relationship I’ll talk myself out of it. … I have rules for a lot of areas of my life. Love is not going to be one of them.”

Paul Ryan Pumps Iron in Time Mag Photo Shoot

The ogling of P90X workout fanatic-turned vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan reached a fever pitch as photos of the ultra-fit Republican hit the Internet today. The full spread will appear in the newest issue of Time Magazine.

Hours before the vice presidential debate — Ryan’s first appearance on the nationally televised debate stage — Time magazine released six photos of Ryan clad in gray work-out gear and a red baseball hat with headphone cords dangling down his back as he pumps 50-pound dumbbells.

The images were taken nearly a year ago when the Wisconsin congressman was a runner-up for the Time Person of the Year issue. At the time, the House budget chairman’s intense workout routine was little known outside the congressional gym.

But 10 months later, Ryan’s fit figure, coupled with his newfound national fame as Mitt Romney’s GOP running mate, has spawned Internet memes, Twitter accounts and a slew of online admirers.

Within hours after Time published the workout photos, two of which feature Ryan doing bicep curls, the Twitter account @PaulRyansBicep was born.

“Fact check this: I can bench press more than you,” another notes.

The”Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” tumblr site nabbed one of the images for its latest online meme, adding these words over the image of Ryan curling a dumbbell, “Hey Girl, defending your wallet at the debate means TRAINING.”

A fake OkCupid dating profile was also created shortly after the workout photos were posted. In it Ryan’s body type is listed as “jacked” and his self-summary reads, “I’m lookin’ for a nice bunch of women to give up everything they stand for an vote for me. And those guns? Yeah — I built that ;)”

Ryan, 49, has not shied away from his now-infamous workout routine, despite the online attention. His father and grandfather died of heart disease, a genetic history he is combating by keeping his body fat below 8 percent.

Even the strenuous campaign trail can’t keep him away from his workouts.

“I’m going to keep myself in shape, that’s for sure,” Ryan told Yahoo News shortly after being selected as the vice presidential running mate.

DC Comics New 52 – The Gateway to Comics

New 52

In a short-story kind of sense, I owe this entire blog and everything we’ve accomplished over the past year to DC Comics. The New 52 has become a gateway for me, as well as many others I believe, to jump back into comics. It helps when you have friends who put the comic bug in your ear as well (@The_ScottToomey). But overall, I had no expectation to be blogging comics and I had no idea I would be enjoying the books and this industry as much as I am right now.

Sadly, not everyone has enjoyed the reboot by DC. Many comic veterans have been disappointed by some of the stories and designs, as their heroes are not the same characters they used to be. Below is just one example quote of someone disappointed with Superman.

People who think that DC’s new 52 is a “success” are delusional. They have destroyed my love for Superman and pretty much all of DC except for about 10 books maybe. I can’t believe the kool-aid some people are drinking. Give me the old DC and actual characters I care about. Also Marvel “copied” it….no, they didn’t mess all their old continuity to try to win the market share.

Unfortunately, the newer readers like myself don’t know much different as we naturally embraced the starting off point. As a new reader or someone who steps into a comic shop a few times per year, it can be really frustrating and overwhelming to select a few books that are already on issue #78 or #22 even. Understandably, some long-time readers want the depth and history behind their characters to exist, as they have invested a lot of time and money into the characters they love, and they want to continue to follow them with that familiarity or closeness. In this sense, I appreciate both sides of the coin. Some of DC’s titles and arcs have been very entertaining as they didn’t completely recreate many (or most) of these characters, and the way they marketed the New 52 has been ultra fantastic. The social media push, advertising, and large number of artist and writer signings has really propelled the entire market. DC didn’t just blow up their own universe, they shook the entire industry. Comixology and digital comics are also playing a huge part in that, but really, every other comic publisher in existence should be thanking DC Comics. Why? Because the New 52 has become a gateway for new or renewed comic buyers to follow other titles from other publishers.

That said, I was a HUGE New 52 Kool-Aid drinker for the first 6-8 months and Comichype.com most likely wouldn’t exist without it. The New 52 was a gateway for me to jump back into comics in general, where I did find some New 52 titles that I enjoyed, but it also got me into other publishers and stories as well. I am sorry to hear that some veterans have been slapped in the face with the relaunch but I hope it was all for a good cause. I hope that long-term, these stories and characters will mature, and that DC will suck those longtime readers back in for everyone’s sake. I do think the relaunch sparked the industry a bit which is good for everyone… then again, what do I really know about the industry? Have shop owner’s revenue gone up on average over the past year? Are they selling more DC titles? If so.. then this is a success and it’s good for DC obviously, but also comics in general. I also believe that the growing success in comic based movies is contributing to comic sales and everyone who enjoys these movies should also give the books a chance. I still get the feeling that many people immediately dismiss the idea of comics or think they are childish or meant for teens and younger, but the truth is, comics are fiction at its finest. I have NEVER enjoyed novels as much as I’ve enjoyed comics. Here’s a movie idea or incentive, hand out a free comic at the next big comic movie premiere. Show those people who are there on marvel now preview1 DC Comics New 52 The Gateway to Comicsopening night that the movie doesn’t end and that they can follow these stories on paper.

Whether you are a fan of the New 52 or not, all of us comic fans should be thankful for this relaunch. Superman is still Superman, Batman is still Batman, we have a few new characters to learn about, a number of older or continued characters still exist, and overall, comic shops and digital sales have performed well over the past year. The DC ‘Gateway’ has really opened my eyes in discovering the quality content being put on the shelves each week by multiple publishers, and without the New 52, I most likely would have missed out on this hobby in which I sincerely enjoy. Thanks DC.

What’s new this week? The Marvel Universe has been a bit overwhelming for me and I have not tried many books from this publisher. The battles in AvX were fun and I enjoyed the mini-series called Battle Scars but when can I really jump into a Marvel series? How about NOW! With Marvel NOW! starting up and the debut of Uncanny Avengers #1, I’m jumping into Marvel the same way I did with the New 52 last year. Part of me thinks that I will never be a devoted Marvel follower simply because I feel more connected to the DC Universe but I owe it to myself as a fan of comics and fiction to support Marvel NOW! and have some fun with this. What do you think? Was the New 52 good for the industry as well as good for DC Comics? I encourage feedback on this post! Has starting off on a reboot or relaunch encouraged you to begin picking up books from other publishers as well? I hope so!

Colton Haynes not returning to Teen Wolf?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Colton Haynes will not be returning for a third season of MTV's scripted series Teen Wolf, a source tells Us Weekly exclusively.

The former male model, 24, has played high school student and lacrosse team co-captain Jackson Whittemore since the show premiered in June 2011. When the show's second season ended in August 2012, Haynes' character had transitioned into a werewolf.

"Colton is leaving Teen Wolf," a source tells Us. "It's not that he didn't want to return because he did. It's that the heads of the show wanted to limit him to only appearing on half the season -- 12 episodes, not 24." Producers are also conducting a national casting search to find two identical male twins for season 3.

A spokesperson for the network denies Haynes will be exiting the supernatural smash, telling Us there is "absolutely no truth that Colton is being pushed out or that he, or any cast member, is being replaced. We love Colton and look forward to his returning with the entire cast for season 3 of Teen Wolf."

According to a source, the Teen Wolf cast is "devastated" by Haynes' sudden departure. "They are sad as they had become a family," the source tells Us. "Colton loves Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden and Tyler Posey. They are his best friends. He is upset that he won't be returning . . .He is being forced out of the show."

Though Haynes would have liked to continue playing Jackson Whittemore, "if he did the 12 episodes, he would not be able to work on anything else during the 12 episodes he's not on," the source says.

X FACTOR LIVE DISCUSSION + How does Simon Cowell look so young?

Sexy Si reveals the anti-aging secrets for his bikini body.

Fresh-faced "X-Factor" judge Simon Cowell celebrated his 53rd birthday this week, and looks fitter and healthier than ever, thanks to regular workouts and an antioxidant-rich diet. Cowell, who suffered a nervous breakdown this summer due to stress and overwork, works out several days a week maintain his toned physique and gets regular Botox injections to keep his face smooth and wrinkle-free.

Simon is fanatical about his anti-aging health regimen, which includes the following, according to GQ:

Cowell has the same breakfast every morning delivered by his housekeeper: Hot water with lemon, then papaya juice with lime. Then oatmeal. Then tea. Then three different smoothies—a spinach smoothie, an antioxidant smoothie, and a super smoothie with seven fruits. "I love to wake up in a good mood and look forward to what's coming," he says. "As soon as that tray is put in front of me, I can't wait to have it. I like looking forward to things."

He watches cartoons every morning. "It just puts me in a good mood," he explains. "It's less depressing than watching the news, which is just relentless. You've got to try it one morning. You'll be happy for the rest of the day."

Each week he has an intravenous drip with B12, magnesium, vitamin C, and, he says, "something for your liver." He explains, "It sounds odd, but when you have it, it's fantastic." He is connected to the IV for half an hour and injected by a nurse at home and at the studio. "When you have it done, it's an incredibly warm feeling," says Cowell. "You feel all the vitamins going through you. It's indescribable but very calming, and then it gives you energy for a good few days afterwards."

Unfortunately, Simon continues to smoke--an addiction he has had since age 8, and one he has no intention of stopping.

"I genuinely still love smoking," he says. "I equate smoking with having a good time. Literally. I shouldn't be saying this, but...well, they're not illegal, are they?"

Son of Real Housewives of Miami's Alexia Arrested for Attacking Homeless Man!

"Real Housewives of Miami" star Peter Rosello was arrested for battery today after socking a homeless man in the balls last week, this according to law enforcement.

20-year-old Rosello -- the son of housewife Alexia Echevarria -- was arrested for simple battery, which was categorized as a felony on the police report because Rosello attacked a homeless person.

Florida has a law that classifies attacks on homeless people as hate crimes, meaning they carry stricter penalties.

He's currently being held on $5,000 bond.

Richard Sharpstein, Rosello’s attorney, talked to press shortly after Rosello turned himself in and said, ”He’ll be pleading not guilty. We’ll present the best defense possible.” Sharpstein has his work cut out for him. It’s going to be mighty difficult for him to convince a judge that his client is not guilty when there is video evidence of the incident.

Alexia’s ex-husband Pedro Rosello arrested again!

It’s been a rough week for Alexia Ecchevarria. After the Real Housewives of Miami star’s son, Peter Rosello, was caught in the middle of a hobo assault scandal, she’s now dealing with the fallout from her ex-husband (and the father of her two sons) being arrested again — this time for violating his probation.

The Miami Herald reports that on September 13, Pedro Rosello was arrested in Miami for violating the probation stemming from an arrest back in 2007 for sexual battery of a minor. At the time of the arrest, he was sentenced to 12 years. Pedro was previously convicted of cocaine smuggling in 1992 and sentenced to 24 years in federal prison. He was released after serving just four-and-a-half years.

According to online records, Pedro is still in custody at Miami’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. There is no word yet on what exactly it was that got him incarcerated or how long he will remain behind bars.

Scoop from #Lotus listening party

$

Lotus is due out November 13th, but you don’t have to wait that long for more details because I got an exclusive first listen!

The listening party was at an amazing estate in Santa Monica, called “House of Rock” – it even had a recording studio on the top floor. Anyways, she was sweet and you could tell she was very excited to play her new music. Christina talked a lot about how she’s been through a lot since her last album. She mentioned The Voice and talked about how special it was to mentor aspiring singers on the show.

So let’s get to it, here’s a little preview of my favorite songs I heard from Lotus:

Make The World Move – this one features Cee-Lo Green, and she did say his part in the song was just kind of made for him. As you’d expect from Cee-Lo, this song is upbeat, soulful, all around fun.

Let There Be Love – One of my faves on the album, this is a dance track and another she did with Max Martin. In fact, she said he calls them “Team Martina.” (Or was it “Maxtina”? You get the idea.)

Sing For Me – Really pretty. Describing this song, she gave a shout out to her fans and said this is almost an anti-bullying anthem.

Blank Page – Slower song she worked on with Sia. She said how happy she was to see Sia getting more mainstream attention. The vocals on this one are amazing, classic Christina.

Cease Fire – this is a song she did with Alex Da Kid, and she talked about his work with Eminem. I could definitely hear the influences here, the song is edgy and full of fire. “I’m a risk-taker,” she said, adding that controversy “always seems to follow me. It’s just the way is.”

Circles – oh man, this is a fun song. It’s a big sounding song with sassy lyrics and those giant Christina vocals. She described it as a song for the haters. Like “Fighter” but “think more tongue-in-cheek.” She giggles at the end and it’s adorable.

Just A Fool – Another cool duet, this one is with Blake Shelton. She spoke very highly of Blake and said he has such a huge heart. She told us how emotional he gets over his team on The Voice, and how much he cares. This song is a little bit country and a little bit soul. It’s very pretty and emotional.

She decided to save a couple of surprises for when Lotus actually comes out, so we’ll get to hear them on November 13th. I can say this, if you’re a big XTina fan, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with Lotus.

Courtney Stodden: Faced big legal issue on 'Couples Therapy'

Courtney Stodden faced a big legal issue while filming "Couples Therapy" with her 51-year-old husband, Doug Hutchison. Wednesday night revealed a few details about what went on with the Teen Bride as the show taped. Since she wasn't yet 18-years-old at the time she was on the show, she wasn't allowed to sleep with her husband at the house where the rest of the cast stayed. Due to child labor laws, the show had a set number of hours required to work with Courtney as well.

It was the first time in the pair's marriage that they spent the night apart. Hutchison and Courtney married in 2011 -- a union that created all kinds of controversy and it hasn't died down. Two "Couples Therapy" cast members in particular -- Nik Richie and Shayne Lamas -- are outspoken about their opposition to the marriage. For Nik it's all about Doug being a child molester marrying such a young woman. For his wife, Shayne, she's uncomfortable with Courtney's hypesexual presence in revealing clothes.

Dr. Jenn Berman asked Courtney Stodden if she had ever been sexually abused or molested because she "presents" in a "hypersexual" way. Read more about it here.

"Couples Therapy" airs Wednesday nights on VHI at 9 p.m., ET/PT.

Ralph Lauren's "First Plus Size Model" Robyn does new swimwear shoot

Cosmopolitan:
"Robyn Lawley totally embodies what a real woman is."

Winter is slowly encroaching on the U.S., but model Robyn Lawley has made one last stand for summer in a stunning new swimwear shoot.

The 23-year-old size 12 (UK size 16) model took to the Cook Islands’ Aitutaki Lagoon to model printed bikinis for Cosmopolitan Australia’s November issue.

After landing a major contract as the first 'plus-size' model for Ralph Lauren last month, the 6ft 2in beauty shows off her now famous curves, defying ideals that thinness equals beauty.

Recently those curves have also been featured on the cover of Vogue Italia, French Elle and as the face of Boux Avenue lingerie.

And in photographer Steven Chee’s sun-drenched images for Cosmopolitan, Miss Lawley is refreshingly portrayed as an everyday model - the words 'swimwear for plus-size girls' nowhere to be seen on the magazine's pages.

Cosmopolitan's Fashion Director, Nicole Adolphe, said: 'Robyn totally embodies what a real woman is, and our readers adore her - so I HAD to shoot her for our special swim issue. And what a shoot, she simply oozes sexuality and is the ultimate Cosmo girl.'

Despite being profiled on other magazine covers with captions that read 'The model who likes her food,' the Australian-born model says she is slowly making size irrelevant.

'I've given up caring what people think,' she told People magazine recently.

'I tell tall girls, being tall and curvy is the double whammy! But confidence is really sexy. I love my shape. I love my body. I've come a long way.'

Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed eight per cent less than the average woman; today, she weighs 23per cent less.

'I'm big boned,' she said on Good Morning America last month.

'I used to be told to lose weight and exercise all the time. I got a huge amount of pressure to diet. And my body, it was such a battle for me to do that because I'm tall and I'm broad. I really struggled to maintain that size.'

Despite the fact that 50per cent of women wear a size 14 or larger, most designers only cater to sizes 14 or smaller, and Miss Lawlely hopes to be the catalyst to change that.

She said: 'I genuinely want companies to take notice and start being more realistic about who their customer really is. I hope to keep breaking down those barriers.'
