From a report called 'It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World' by Martha Lauzen, from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.
- Women comprised 22% of protagonists in the top 100 grossing films of 2015 (in the US). An increase of 10% from 2014;
- Little to no change when you consider non-white characters. 27% of Black, Latina, Asian, and females of other races/ethnicities were major characters, 38% of White females were major characters. 76% of all female characters were White, 13% were Black (2% up from 2014), 4% were Latina (no change), 3% were Asian (1% down from 2014), 2% were other worldly, and 2% were other (you can compare the years at the source for the report)
- The percentage of male characters in their 50s (17%) is almost twice that of female characters in their 50s (9%)
- Female characters of color were less likely to play major characters;
In films with at least one woman director and/or writer women comprised:
