LES MISERABLES Cast to Perform at the 85th Academy Awards!

According to Daily Mail, the cast of the Academy Award nominated LES MISERABLES will be performing at the Oscars this February. The song that will be performed is still undecided, but rumors are circulating that it will likely be either be a medley, or one of the ensemble numbers such as 'One Day More' or 'Do You Hear The People Sing.'

The paper reports that "It's still being decided what song will be sung, but Samantha will participate with other cast members such as best actor nominee Hugh Jackman, best supporting actress front-runner Anne Hathaway, heart-throb Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and others in one of the rousing crowd numbers - One Day More or Do You Hear The People Sing.

The other idea being discussed is to have a medley with, perhaps, Anne performing an excerpt of I Dreamed A Dream (which she sings with heart-breaking raw emotion in the picture); Samantha coming in with On My Own; Hugh giving us his Who Am I? or Bring Him Home, and so on."

The 85th Academy Awards will be presented live on Oscar Sunday, February 24, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood and Highland Center, and televised live by the ABC Television Network.

Helmed by The King's Speech's Academy Award-winning director, Tom Hooper, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh production stars Hugh Jackman, Oscar winner Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, LES MISERABLES tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, Sacrifice and redemption-a timeless Testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for Decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

Leonardo DiCaprio may have lost the Golden Globe for his role in Django Unchained, but that didn't stop the actor from enjoying himself a few nights later.

Alongside best friend Lukas Haas, DiCaprio visited West Hollywood hot spot Bootsy Bellows on Tuesday night.

Donning a newsboy hat, DiCaprio mingled with club promoters, while Haas did "his own thing," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "Leo hung back and sat on top of the banquette. He was getting a ton of attention from the ladies."

The usually quiet DiCaprio was "upbeat" and "even danced and clapped along" as music from Jay-Z and Kanye West played. And when the actor was approached by other clubgoers, he was "very gracious and chatted with them for a few minutes," the source adds.

Once the lights came on, the two friends reconvened to figure out their plans for the rest of the night.

The Ratings Are In: 3.2 Million Tune Into Oprah-Armstrong Interview

3.2 million viewers tuned in to OWN for the first airing of Oprah's bombshell interview with Lance Armstrong on Thursday.

It was the second highest-rated telecast for the young network, according to a statement from OWN on Friday. The interview's second airing at 9 p.m. PT drew an additional 1.1 million viewers, for a total of 4.3 million viewers watching the interview that night. The 9 p.m. airing came second to the March 2012 telecast of "Oprah's Next Chapter" with Whitney Houston’s family, which drew 3.5 million viewers.

Thursday's interview was also the highest-rated weekday telecast for OWN in the key 25-54 demographic.

All eyes were on Oprah and Armstrong this past week, as news that he confessed to using performance-enhancing drugs leaked.Oprah said that the interview was "the biggest" of her career, and was widely praised for her questioning.

Thursday's interview — which brought in premiums for advertising time and put OWN in the limelight — is the latest sign that the network is finally gaining traction. Oprah declared that OWN had finally "made the pivot" in September, after it initially struggling to gain traction and several big shake-ups in programming.

The only reason the network is finally seeing any kind of boost is because Big O is back on the screen.

Beyonce, GQ and feminism: another perspective

Beyonce in GQ: All the ladies! Put your hands up for feminism

For the sake of feminism, give Beyoncé a break. Contradiction is progress.

Beyoncé, in a high profile interview, has said that men and women are not equal and that simply, that fact is “ridiculous”:
"You know, equality is a myth, and for some reason, everyone accepts the fact that women don't make as much money as men do. I don't understand that. Why do we have to take a backseat? I truly believe that women should be financially independent from their men. And let's face it, money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define value. They define what's sexy. And men define what's feminine. It's ridiculous."

It is both tragic and hilarious that the most radical thing Beyoncé has said in her 16-year career is accompanied by a photo-shoot in which she’s posing in her knickers for money. Let’s face it, on a website that simultaneously features “The Best Breasts of 2012”, her musings probably won’t even be read. This irony, one that is assumed lost on the pathetic puppet of the patriarchy that is Beyoncé, has been laboured so hard we have forgotten to be constructive. And that is the most dangerous thing of all.

Is this what western feminism has come to? Asks the amazing Hadley Freedman in her damning column. No. It isn’t.This is that cheeky duo, capitalism and patriarchy, doing what they do - and they have been doing it a lot longer than Beyoncé has been providing the beats.Western feminism is amorphous, innovative, and becoming more receptive to individual experience, and more understanding of intersectionality (the radical notion that not all women are not the same). Despite austerity, George Galloway and drinks called Pussy, there is so much out there. We mustn’t waste time or energy picking each other to pieces. We must support and congratulate each other at every opportunity.

Beyoncé has been working, relentlessly, since she was 15, in a universe that is alien to ours. Anyone who has spent that long under the world’s hungry spotlight will contradict themselves, and that she has. On the much-loved track‘Nasty Girl’ from the huge 2001 ‘Survivor’ album she sings, “You's a nasty, nasty, trashy, nasty, sleazy, nasty, classless, nasty… Nasty put some clothes on, I told ya. Don't walk out your house without your clothes on, I told ya”. Fairly horrific. Beyoncé has spoken openly about her Christian beliefs in interviews and songs, “I'm not gon' compromise my Christianity (I'm better than that)”, while performing in scantily-clad outfits designed by her devout mother; an unforgivable contradiction in my Muslim mother’s eyes. However, on the same album we find ‘The Story of Beauty’, written in response to a letter from a young victim of abuse,“please dry your eyes, young girl, don't cry, you're beautiful. It's not your fault, young girl, don't cry, you're beautiful. You're not the one to blame, soon it will be okay, one day you'll realize your beauty”. We see what we want to see.

If a superpower of a woman, who has never been known for feminist discourse and has no need to engage with it as long as she lives, chooses to, and is met with scepticism and harshness, why bother? Who are we, to hold it against Beyoncé, that she was not an unwavering feminist in 1996 and make it an inhospitable environment to her in 2013? Who are white middle class feminists to condemn Beyonce’s discussion of the pay gap (bigger for ethnic minority women I might add), to tell her she isn’t feminist enough? She contradicts herself because she is a woman, on a journey, living in a system designed to make women feel that they mustn’t question, that they have to be either, or; Madonna or whore, Angela Davis or Rihanna. There is a middle-ground full of uncertainty and I congratulate Beyoncé for stepping into it.

I contradict myself. You do too. But we get to do it in private. Thinking we have to be all or nothing is another tool of the patriarchy, used to discredit women’s experience and scare them from feminism. I don’t shave my legs but I pluck my eyebrows. That’s a contradiction of sorts, and one I’m happy to live with for now. But it is used to dismiss me. “Unless you’re doing The Kahlo, you’re not doing anything”. I don’t know what’s in my future, how far I will be comfortable challenging the confines of what is acceptable in our society. And neither does Beyoncé. But what I do know is that we need to be kind, open and non-judgemental if we want the message to spread.

Sometimes we contradict ourselves publicly too. Recently, Anne Hathaway has been lauded for her feminism, and rightly so! Her recent takedown of a talk-show host who tried to open an interview about her latest film with a question about her vagina is impeccable: “it kinda made me sad, on two accounts… I was very sad that we live in an age where someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to Les Mis”.

Hathaway is a heroine. Case closed. No mention of the fact that she has posed nude to advertise her films. No umming and erring. Is this snobbery? She works in film, serious, lasting, dignified film - not the judge-central world of pop music of which everyone feels entitled to a piece. And let’s face it. She knows her shit. She’s also a beautiful white woman. An acceptable, non-threatening, white woman.

The race dimension of the disparity in the way these events have been interpreted is another article, but the fact Beyoncé is a black woman must not be side-stepped. In their criticism of Beyoncé, people have assumed she has brought nothing to feminism. But it is clearer than day that she brings something important to the lives of millions of women, millions of black women. She might not quote Bell Hooks in interviews, but as one of the biggest icons of the 21st century, she sure has some stuff to say. She has long been a champion of The Independent Woman, especially where finances are concerned, and if that’s how she understands and practices feminism it is not our place to outright condemn her. Remember, this interview comes shortly after she ended her business relationship with her father and gave birth to a daughter.

If we are so intent on building an accessible, inclusive feminism, why don’t we focus on what Beyoncé has to offer, rather than her all-too-obvious failings? For the sake of feminism? And all the women who have been inspired by her? I am one of those women.

When I look at the GQ spread, I do not see tits and arse. I see a formidable singer, performer and athlete who nursed me through my teens, inspired me to sing and dance, strut and survive. I see a woman who belonged to me and the black and Asian girls I went to school with, a woman with skin our colour and thighs we could relate to. I see a club where white people were the guests – a precious space in our homogenous media. I see the first woman in 20 years to headline Glastonbury. In Beyonce’s contradiction I see hope and progress. In the backlash I see negativity and narrow-mindedness. Next time, let’s look a little deeper.

I know this has been discussed to death here but I thought some of you may be interested in this article.

Julian Fellowes Talks About Series 4 of Downton + Dan Stevens

Violet and Mary are not impressed with Dan Stevens.

The fourth series has been confirmed and Fellowes is mid-way through writing it. There is just the mildest hint of panic in his voice as we discuss where he’s up to.

‘No, no, nowhere near finished yet. What can I say? We have the first read-through in February so the hounds are snapping. I’ve been at it quite furiously, but my wife did insist that I take Christmas Day off.’

Of course, what happened on screen on Christmas Day in the Downton festive special left us all reeling. The handsome Matthew Crawley, husband of Lady Mary, dead in a car crash? No one saw that one coming. It had been known the actor Dan Stevens wouldn’t return for another series, but few considered Fellowes would go as far as actually killing him off.

ITV was inundated with complaints that the story line was ‘a travesty’, ‘a tragedy’ and ‘an outrage’, with some saying the ending had ‘ruined their Christmas’.

Fellowes sighs. ‘What did they want us to do? In the UK we can only get actors to commit to three series. In the States they might sign up for seven, but that’s not how it works here. And to engineer an exit is quite difficult. Problems in the marriage would just not have been feasible – not when I’d spent so long setting it up as a happy marriage!’

He chats away about the perils of being the writer of a series that becomes so successful the leading characters are in demand elsewhere.

‘It’s actually lovely to see the youngsters blossom and go on to take up other challenges, but it does present problems. It was probably right for Dan. Less right for us, but that’s what happens in this business.’

He admits that one of the ‘family’ leaving dealt the show a serious blow. ‘It’s always a big deal if a family member wants to leave. If it’s a servant it’s no problem, they can go and get other jobs so there’s an obvious exit. I didn’t want him to go, but he couldn’t be persuaded to stay. Dan did nothing wrong, he gave proper notice and everything, but I kept hoping he’d change his mind.’

Then, Fellowes admits, the Downton bosses tried to convince him to stay for just long enough to film a feasible ending that didn’t involve sudden death.

‘My thinking was if we had him for another three episodes he could have a foreign posting, but he wasn’t prepared to do that.’

So what shocks and scandals will the next series of Downton present us with? One assumes there will be much weeping and wailing from Lady Mary, suddenly our favourite TV widow? ‘Absolutely. There will be a lot of grief to be worked through.’ [Get those awards, Michelle!]

And where will the hand of happiness fall (given that there has to be a balance in these things)?

Perhaps another wedding – one that actually goes ahead – for Lady Edith? He smiles. ‘I’m not sure about that. It strikes me that there are certain people who seem to attract misfortune, and Lady Edith is one of them. Besides, it’s much easier to write about upset and tragedy. It’s actually very hard to write about happiness.’

The risk is the other cast members will also get itchy feet when they see Dan Stevens head to Hollywood. There are already rumours Lady Edith may be the next to leave. Could we see a mass exodus? ‘I hope not!’ he says, horrified. Fans will join him on that one.

Notre Dame's real dead woman - Lizzy Seeberg's suicide is ignored

$
0
0
Less than a day into the Manti Te’o revelations, we’ve heard more about a fake dead girlfriend of a Notre Dame football player than a real dead girl. Lizzy Seeberg committed suicide, not long after being intimidated by Notre Dame football players for reporting a sexual assault by one of their teammates. A second woman who was taken to the hospital for a rape exam declined to formally accuse another Notre Dame football player after getting a series of bullying texts from players.

The handful of people who immediately took note of the contrast in the attention — both by the press and by the university — are absolutely right to be angry. But no one should be surprised.

We don’t know everything about the Te’o saga yet, but there is probably only one fake dead girlfriend mythologized by the sports media, the existence of “Catfish”-ing as a verb notwithstanding. Whereas there are legions of stories of sexual violence against women and men by star athletes and staff, who can reliably count on the impunity offered by fandom. Confronting the former is a little embarrassing: The public equivalent of loving too much, the allure of a heartwarming story everyone wanted to believe. Confronting the latter requires uglier, more difficult self-examination, and accepting collective responsibility costs more.

It matters, too, how we can talk about each story. Some Manti Te’o Twitter jokes were instant classics; no one decent can make jokes about a girl who killed herself after being told, “Don’t do anything you would regret,” and “Messing with Notre Dame football is a bad idea,” according to Melinda Henneberger’s reporting. Henneberger, a Notre Dame alum, wrote in the Washington Post in early December that she won’t be cheering for the team. “As a thought exercise, how many predators would have to be on the team before you’d no longer feel like cheering?” she wrote. (She also said, “There are plenty of good guys on the team, too, I’m repeatedly told, And oh, that Manti Te’o is inspiring. I don’t doubt it.” Very few did.) It’s easier to just change the subject and not think about whether there is something endemic to football culture that enables sexual entitlement with the reasonable assumption of getting away with it.

We all have heard by now how denial and institutional culture contributed to Jerry Sandusky’s ability to continue assaulting young boys for years, under cover of the Penn State football program. But once that was exposed, it was rightly considered an unambiguous evil. But the sexual assault of women can and is often explained away — including the Notre Dame donor who justified his continued support to Henneberger by saying that Seeberg had been sexually aggressive, that “she was all over the boy.” In other words, it’s not just the players who are banding together around their brothers whether they’re rapists or not; it’s the adults around them who are turning a blind eye because they consider other things are more important. And they’re willing to believe anything except that these nice boys can be rapists.

Dave Zirin, who has long called for the Notre Dame football program to be shut down as irredeemably corrupt, pointed out that the university had hired a private investigator for the Te’o case but not the numerous other allegations of wrongdoing by players. Zirin said of the school’s athletic director, “It says so much that Te’o’s bizarre soap opera has moved [Jack] Swarbrick to openly weeping but he hasn’t spared one tear, let alone held one press conference, for Lizzy Seeberg … The problem at Notre Dame is not just football players without a compass; it’s the adults without a conscience.” We live in a country that officially condemns rape and sexual assault but when confronted with the real possibility of it, rarely strays from denial and excuses. That’s the biggest scam of all.

Trailer For Cool-Looking Upcoming Canadian TV Animated Show 'Urbance'

Check out this trailer for an upcoming animated TV series I received, titled Urbance from Canadian director Joel Dos Reis Viegas, for Steambot Studios (a Canada & USA-based visual development studio who work in a variety of media platforms, including film and TV).

I'm told that it's not yet officially a TV series, but the filmmaker and the studio likely plan to pitch it to TV networks, after working on creating the world of the series for some 3 years (animation takes a long time to complete).

The synopsis reads:

In the big city, gender war rises. Sex is prohibited because of a genetic deadly virus. Ruled by hate and anger, boys and girls grow up apart from each other, forming rivals gangs. Among these lost teenagers, Kenzell and lesya will fight adversity and defy all the rules in order to live their love and restore peace.

A website has been set up for the project (HERE) where you'll find lots more information about the proposed serial, including a bunch of still images, and a breakdown of each character from each gang.

No ETA yet on when we can expect to see the first episode, whether online, or on TV. But it's got my attention, so I'll certainly be paying attention for any updates.

How We Met: Rupert Grint and Matthew Lewis

A film, television and stage actor, Lewis (right in picture) is best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films; he has since appeared in TV drama 'The Syndicate'. He lives in Yorkshire. Cast as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter film franchise at the age of 11, Grint starred in all eight films, as well as several independent films including the thriller 'Cherrybomb'. He lives in London.

Matthew Lewis 23

Dan [Radcliffe], Rupert and Emma [Watson] were already splashed over the newspapers by the time I came to my first Harry Potter [script] readthrough, when I was about 11. It was daunting at that age, like having your first day at school.

He was quite an enigma, as he didn't talk much about himself – he still doesn't – but he liked to have fun. In our spare time we hung out a lot in his room, where he had a pool table and a dartboard with a picture of Saddam Hussein stuck on. Then we'd spend hours exchanging endless obscure Alan Partridge quotes.

Rupert was great at making everyone laugh on set. There was one scene in which he had to come on and say, "Back off, unless you want a fistful of Weasley," which was a direct quote from the book. But Rupert couldn't say it, and he broke out in an infectious laugh; every time he tried to do the scene we all got the giggles, too – until the director was like, "This just isn't working, let's scrap the line and move on." We'd wasted an entire day filming because of Rupert's laugh.

In the early films he was all about making an audience laugh, too – he has such great facial expressions. But he can be serious [in his acting], too, and he'll probably end up being one of the more bankable actors [from the franchise].

He also showed versatility in how he developed the love story [with Emma Watson's Hermione Granger]. Though when it finally came to his kiss with Emma, we ripped him for it; as attractive as she is, he was not looking forward to it.

With his red hair, he was always recognised first when we went out together; at the football, people would come up to ask for pictures. But despite all this recognition he just gets on with it.

Rupert has been paid handsomely for his job and works hard, so when he's not working he buys all this stuff people say they'd buy if they ever won the Lottery. He's got an ice-cream van, a hovercraft… all this incredible stuff. I was round his house recently and I was like, "Rupert you got an ice-rink in your house!" Once I went to pick him up, he had a lake with a swan pedalo; I wanna have a go on that.

Rupert Grint 24

When we started filming the Potter films, we had all left school and were with one another for long periods of time. Friendships tend to emerge in that environment in an intense way.

Matt had done a few things before, such as Heartbeat, so he was already a star. When he was younger he was like a little Peter Kay, with a real Yorkshire sense of humour. He'd eat chocolate mousse and purposefully get it all over his face to make me laugh – and then I couldn't finish a scene.

Going to a WWF [wrestling] match up in Newcastle was one of our first bonding sessions – afterwards we went to McDonald's with Dan [Radcliffe] and went crazy with fries, sticking them in our ears. I'm not sure me, Matt and Dan could go there together like that now.

Even in the fourth film, poor Matt still had some crappy fat suit, prosthetic teeth and things to make his ears stick out, so people thought that was how he looked, but underneath he had changed. For me, that contrast was clearest in the final film, when he did this big speech in a courtyard and you thought, "Where did that come from?" It was a great moment.

I noticed, too, the change in public awareness – overnight he became a sex symbol and it was nice for Matt to have his moment. He gave me a bit of stick with the kissing scenes with Emma, though, as back in the day he had a little thing with her.

Moving on and doing different things was a big deal for us, as we'd spent our whole childhoods with the same people. It was hard to walk away and not get choked up, but I always knew Matt and I would stay in touch. It's great that I'll always have him to talk to about it all.

I'll never forget one moment in the work canteen when we started throwing peas at each other. They ended up flying towards a certain Slytherin's table – we always sat separately – and it escalated. I got threatened by one of the gentlemen, and there was a big chase with me, Matt and the Slytherins all round the studio. I was really quite scared as they were big guys, but he had my back.

Does Matt think I buy odd stuff? Probably, but as I've worked from such an early age, money has always been a bit weird for me and I don't know what to do with it, so I have fun with it.

As for Matt, it was great to see him playing a different role in The Syndicate – a real thug, hardcore, but he added vulnerability to it and he was very good.

The world's No. 1 women's tennis player Viktoria Azarenka (23) has a star boyfriend who has a penchant for shots and party rock. She is reportedly dating LMFAO's Redfoo.

Sports Illustrated (h/t Big Lead) reports the tennis star and former member of the hit party duo LMFAO are quite the power couple.

The report notes Redfoo (37) has been a constant fixture at tennis events since the US Open, but now he has a specific player he is far more interested in than any other.

The site spotted the following radio interview where the pop star spilled all the deets on his affection for the best women's player in the world.

“I’m in love,” he said. “I don’t care who knows it. With a special one. I got a special one. A No. 1, if you will.”

That really should be enough for any tennis star to connect the dots.

Then he was interviewed by Australia's Channel 7 and issued the following on Azarenka.

“I’m a big Vika fan as well,” he said. “I’m supporting Team Vika. You know, I came here just to see her play. It’s very exciting.”

When asked whether the two were romantically involved, Redfoo didn’t do much to quash the rumors.

“I don’t like to kiss and tell,” he said. “But we’re really close and she’s a very special person and I’m very happy in my life right now.”

Glee Star Mark Salling Sued For Sexual Battery

Mark Salling -- a "Glee" star -- is being sued by a woman who claims he committed sexual battery by forcing sex without a condom.

Roxanne Gorzela claims in her lawsuit ... she began dating Mark in Sept., 2010. She says in March 2011, before she had to go on a trip to Canada, they hooked up ... and things got hot and heavy. Roxanne acknowledges she consented to having sex with Mark -- but ONLY with a condom.

The suit, filed by attorney Philip J. Layfield, alleges 30-year-old Mark blew off her demand and proceeded to "insert his penis into [her] vagina without a condom." She says she protested and Mark pulled out, but re-engaged again without a rubber.

And, Roxanne says, it got worse. She claims later that month she went to Mark's house to confront him about the emotional distress she was suffering and her "health concerns." She says she found him in bed with another woman. Roxanne says she demanded on the spot he prove that he was clean -- no STDs -- and he allegedly responded by grabbing her and pushing her to the ground.

Roxanne says she went to the cops and filed a police report the same day.

Roxanne is asking for unspecified damages.

UPDATE: Salling's publicist, Janice Lee states that... "There is no truth to this. It's the textbook case of a disgruntled girl looking to cash in on a TV star's success."

She adds, "We turn the rest over to Mark's attorneys and have no further comment."

The artistic director of the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet was the victim of a vicious acid attack in central Moscow that may stem from rifts within the dance company.

Russian news reports say Sergei Filin was walking home on Thursday night when a masked assailant threw acid on his face and ran off.
Filin, 43, is said to be in stable condition, but the attack left him with third degree burns across his face. Doctors are scrambling to save his eyesight. He is schedule to undergo surgery today and is expected to be flown to Belgium for further treatment. Russian news reports say he will require plastic surgery and that recovery could take months.
Filin was a star ballet dancer with the Bolshoi company before becoming artistic director in 2011. Investigators have suggested that internal theater politics may be behind the attack. In a statement, the Bolshoi Theater said he had been the subject of an intimidation campaign in recent months. According to RIA Novosti, his car tires were slashed, he received threatening phone calls, and there were attempts to hack into his Facebook account.

So far no suspects have been apprehended. RIA Novosti reports that, if caught, they face up to eight years in prison.

Also, from the NYT: The stories about vengeance at the Bolshoi Ballet go back centuries: The rival who hid an alarm clock in the audience, timed to go off during Giselle’s mad scene, or who threw a dead cat onto the stage at curtain in lieu of flowers. There are whispers of needles inserted in costumes, to be discovered in midpirouette, or — the worst — broken glass nestled in the tip of a toeshoe.

Police to investigate former AKB48 singer's 'child porn' picture

TOKYO — Japanese police have launched a probe over a controversial magazine picture of a child in a provocative pose with a naked pop singer, its publisher and reports said Friday.

About 670,000 copies of the popular weekly Young Magazine were pulled from stores ahead of its planned sale last weekend because of a storm over the photograph, which showed singer Tomomi Kasai with a young, apparently Caucasian or Eurasian child cupping her breasts.

The magazine’s publisher Kodansha said two of its employees who handle compliance matters went voluntarily to the police “after receiving a request for a hearing over the issue”.

The child welfare section (of the police department) asked that the picture in question no longer be circulated,” a company spokesman said, adding that police wanted all copies of the magazine taken out of circulation.

In the photograph, the blond-haired boy is shown reaching from behind to cup the breasts of 21-year-old Kasai, who until last year was a member of highly successful all-girl group AKB48, as she stares into the camera.

The photograph, on an inside page of the weekly, was released as part of a publicity drive for a book of pictures of Kasai produced by the same firm.

On Friday, the mass-circulation Mainichi Shimbun newspaper quoted one investigator as saying that police “thought this issue might turn into an international controversy”.

A spokesman for the publisher earlier this week told AFP the company accepted there was a problem with the shot, but declined to offer an opinion on whether the image fell foul of Japan’s child pornography laws.

Whether or not it is child porn, it infringes on socially accepted standards,” he said.

Japan’s huge publishing sector includes magazines and graphic comics containing images that may be considered obscene in other developed countries. It is not uncommon to see people reading such material on commuter trains.
