BTW Foundation continues to raise awareness around on-campus rape: "It Happened to Me"

$

Most young adults leave for college feeling excited about the new opportunities and relationships that await them. Many also share the mindset of “bad things can’t happen to me,” myself included. I left home for my sophomore year at a university 1,000 miles away from home, anxious to get back to my sorority sisters and my freedom. However, within my first month back at school I found myself experiencing a set of very different emotions.

Three weeks into my fall semester I was raped by a guy who offered to drive me home from a fraternity rush week party. The excitement and joy I felt just a few weeks earlier left and I suddenly felt extremely alone. I pushed away my negative feelings and pretended I wanted what happened that night to happen but I didn’t and I said “no.”

For years I didn’t tell anyone what happened. I made a lot of choices in that time that I regret and I began to blame myself for “getting raped.” I shouldn’t have been drinking. I shouldn’t have worn that skirt. I shouldn’t have flirted with him. I should have waited to go home with my roommate. These thoughts circled through my brain and I replayed the night over and over in my head. I wound up moving home from school my junior year to constant questions from my friends and family as to why I left.

Many people still do not know what I went through or how deeply it has effected me. I remained silent for three years, which may seem odd to some, but is actually extremely common with victims of sexual violence. In fact, 95.2% of students choose to not report their campus rape. I was not willing to admit to myself that anything like that could happen to me. I was embarrassed by the attack and by many of the choices I made after. I still have days where I wish I hadn’t gone to that party and wonder what my life would be life if I didn’t come home but I try not to focus on the negatives and look at the positives.

Although my parents did not know what I went through having them support my decision to move home was vital to my healing process. Five years following my rape I don’t consider myself a victim. I channeled the pain from my experience and used it to motivate myself. I am currently in my second year of graduate school for psychology and would like to use my experience to help others break their silence.

Having someone as influential as Lady Gaga share her own experiences about this subject and take a stand against campus rape is instrumental to change the status quo. Many colleges still believe that rape is not a problem at their school, which contributes to victims not wanting to report. The reality, however, is that about 20% of women will be subject to some form of sexual assault during their college career. That is 20% of women who will feel used, worthless, and alone if something does not change.

There are ways that you can help stop this epidemic. Organizations such as “End Rape on Campus” and “Know Your IX” work to give victims of sexual assault a voice. If you or someone you know was raped or sexually assaulted – know that you are not alone. Together we can work to empower students and put a stop to sexual violence on campus.

If you or someone you love has been sexually assaulted, there are places to turn for help. For a full list of service providers near you, visit RAINN.com and – for immediate assistance – call the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at (800) 656-HOPE (4673).

This song has had a great reception... it's sparked discussions on CNN & PBS, and is being suggested as a way for parents to open topics with their sons about rape.

I'm happy any time these discussions get opened-- as we can see from Kesha & Dr. Luke, silencing, disbelief and discrediting is how women speaking up usually goes.

Naming your attacker remains incredibly dangerous all on its own.

22 (5) Times "Stonewall" Got Dragged

Much to nobody’s surprise (especially that of the activists who were actually there), Stonewall has not fared well after its debut at the Toronto Film Festival. Here are just some of the many metaphors, comparisons and other delightful bits of wordsmithery that we can enjoy together instead of enjoying the movie.

3. “Stonewall couldn’t be more whitewashed than if it was doused in Clorox Bleach and thrown into the laundry three times over.” (the heights)

11. “You get more of a sense of what it’s like to visit SeaWorld in the notoriously abysmal Jaws 3D than you do what it was like to patronize Stonewall in Stonewall. Stonewall teaches you about as much about being gay as the Aristocats taught you about being an aristocrat.” (defamer)

12. “Having Danny throw the first brick at the Stonewall riots is a bit like when Marty McFly goes back in time and steals rock ‘n’ roll from Chuck Berry, taking history away from the real participants.” (uproxx)

20. “[The film] ends on a falsely contemporary note, as though it were a PSA for the It Gets Better campaign.” (vulture)

21. “Somehow, director Roland Emmerich has made a movie even less historically accurate than 10,000 BC, the one depicting Egyptian-style pyramids being constructed with the help of woolly mammoths.” (news-observer)

Cindy Crawford Warns Daughter About Modeling Industry

Supermodel Cindy Crawford warned her daughter, a young 14 year old aspiring model Kaia, about the pressures of being in the industry.
kaia-gerber-cindy-crawford-inst-sp_7887123-ORIGINAL-imageGallery_standard
"Today, models are expected to be so tiny and I worry about that for her, because that was never my natural body type and I don't think it'll be hers either. Still, I'll say to her, 'Enjoy carbs while you can!'" said Cindy.

"Kaia's blossoming into such a beautiful young woman and I really want to let her shine. I don't want her to feel in competition with me, although I'll tease her, and say, 'You have my old hair–give it back!' Or, 'Give me back my legs!' But she'll be fine...She's much more together and worldly than I was at her age."

"Fashion and makeup should just be for fun. And somehow it has moved away from that," she said of today's modeling standards and methods. "These days, images that are meant to inspire and make women feel happy to be women sometimes have the opposite effect. They had better learn to sing and act, too, because it's not really enough to just be a model anymore. They want people with a following, and social media has helped because models like Cara [Delevingne], Coco[Rocha] and Gigi [Hadid] can have their own voices and talk to fans directly. There are more pathways available to them than we had."

So basically the entire main cast is back except for Rick Moranis (who seems happier in retirement) and Harold Ramis (passed away last year). And I guess William Atherton aka dickless EPA villain, but I don't really know who cares if he appeared.

No one is reprising their original roles. Their cameos are as brand new characters.

Michael B. Jordan Addresses Controversy: 'I Believe Black Lives Matter'

$
0
0

In an exclusive open letter to ESSENCE.COM he said:

(Excerpt) First and foremost, I believe that Black Lives Matter - unequivocally and without exception. I have never said, written, snapchatted, tweeted, Instagrammed or implied anything to the contrary. Any report that states otherwise is a complete fabrication. I portrayed Oscar Grant in my first leading role in a feature film, Fruitvale Station. I am a founding member of the Blackout for Human Rights Network. I gave a speech just a few months ago on the importance of the Black Lives Matter Movement at the BET Awards. It is frustrating to see a false claim stirred up on social media which has caused my supporters to question where I stand on this crucial issue. But I am confident that my history and continued engagement with my community will speak louder than unfounded rumors.

Secondly, it is challenging to have a nuanced conversation about race and Hollywood period. This sensitive subject becomes even more complicated when you’re dealing with soundbites and articles. A simple idea or opinion can be abbreviated and distorted as it is communicated to readers out of context. Allow me to be clear about my ideas on roles traditionally reserved for White actors. My goal is for my choices and opportunities, as well as those of my fellow actors and actresses of color, to be predicated on our talent, ability and passion and not on false notions of what color an artist must be to play certain roles. I've had the honor to portray Black characters written and directed by Black filmmakers—a privilege that too few actors of color enjoy because of the challenges of Black artistry and access behind the camera. But in addition to those wonderful roles, I also want to have the option to play all kinds of parts with no door closed to actors and actresses like myself.

Lastly, my fans who are women mean the world to me. This is especially true of Black women, who as a group have supported my work long before the industry knew my name. I deeply regret and am ashamed that I said anything to disappoint or disparage them. I apologize with my whole heart for referring to women in the way that I did. The word 'female' used in the manner that I did is dismissive and strips women of their humanity. It is a slang term that guys sometimes use to sound slick and cool coming up. But words have power and I realize now more than ever that this careless language is dehumanizing, inappropriate, and immature. I'm a better man than that. This reference to women will not come out of my mouth publicly or in private again.
