'Girls Like Us' circling femme leads

Sony Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures' adaptation of Sheila Weller's book "Girls Like Us" may still be in development and without a greenlight, but the project is beginning to heat up as a handful of up-and-coming Hollywood starlets start testing for the roles of singers Carly Simon and Carole King.

Taylor Swift is already in line to play Joni Mitchell, as Variety first reported this spring.

Rising stars testing for the role of Simon include Allison Williams ("Girls"), Jessica Pare ("Mad Men") and Analeigh Tipton ("Crazy, Stupid, Love"); among the actresses who will read for the role of King are Alison Pill ("The Newsroom"), Olivia Thirlby ("Dredd 3D"), Ari Graynor ("For a Good Time, Call") and Zoe Kazan ("Ruby Sparks").

Of course, with a project like "Girls Like Us," chemistry between the three leads is crucial, and the filmmakers want to get the casting right before deciding to move forward -- hence, the exploratory testing. Sony had no comment.

The long-gestating drama examines the careers of singers Mitchell, Simon and King and charts their impact on a generation of female musicians. "House" exec producer Katie Jacobs, who optioned the book several years ago, is directing from a script by John Sayles, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers") is set to produce.

Billboard: Miguel is out to rearrange the R&B genre.

Miguel is not a bottle-popper. He's not buying tables or swilling Champagne in the club. He's not inside the club at all. Instead, you might find him sipping Jack and Coke and talking about his favorite blogs with whoever's on the stool next to him at the local dive bar. He's the rare R&B star who might be more comfortable nestled in a crowd of indie-rock nerds than a throng of models. "I remember seeing Radiohead the first time they played Coachella," Miguel boasts.
That was in 2004, when Miguel Jontel Pimentel was still a teenage music junkie of mixed race trying to find his mission as a performer, producer and songwriter. Eight years later, the 25-year-old identifies himself as part of a new wave of R&B artists less concerned with singles that nod to EDM and promise to make you scream and more interested in unfurling slow grooves that explore new territory. With his music joining that of Frank Ocean, the Weeknd and Elle Varner, he sees what he calls an R&B "renaissance" taking shape.
"Somewhere along the way... the genre became a stereotype, and I've never been one for stereotypes," Miguel says. "I'm Mexican and black -- my father is Mexican, my mom is black. I've been in the middle my entire life, having to make decisions as to who and what I am. It was really important for me to stand out. I wanted the music to stand out that way."
Miguel's 'Adorn' Becomes His Third No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
Miguel's debut album, "All I Want Is You," was released less than two years ago, but the singer considers follow-up "Kaleidoscope Dream," due Oct. 2 on ByStorm/RCA Records, to be "a reintroduction." The new album is more daring in its synthesis of unfussy instrumentation and intimate songwriting -- witness the careful guitar haze of "Use Me" or the falsetto-strewn metaphors of the title track.
The album's first single, "Adorn," has sold 190,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan; ascended to the top of Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally in its 19th week; and is making inroads at top 40 as well, clocking in at No. 35 on this week's Billboard Hot 100. SiriusXM VP of music programming Dion Summers says that the song has amassed 1,600 spins and is still in power rotation, while R&B/hip-hop WVEE Atlanta PD Reggie Rouse says requests have been flooding in from men and women for the adoration anthem. "He's got a great following, and he's not selling sex per se-he's selling romance," Rouse adds.

After Mark Pitts, the then-president of urban music at Jive, signed Miguel to his ByStorm Entertainment imprint in 2007, the singer's debut album sat completed and unreleased for more than two years due to legal issues with Miguel's former production company. When "All I Want Is You" was finally issued through ByStorm/Jive in December 2010, the album's title track was still slowly growing at radio, and Miguel was finding his way as a performer, having recently joined Usher and Trey Songz on tour.
The disc debuted at No. 109 on the Billboard 200 with 11,000 copies sold, according to SoundScan. "I was sick to my stomach," Pitts recalls about the first-week numbers. "I didn't really want to put it out at that time, but we knew he was going to tour and needed to get some product out there."
Miguel and manager Phillana Williams agreed that he should spend the next year supporting "All I Want Is You" on the road, and as Miguel polished his stagecraft, more singles connected: "Sure Thing" hit No. 1 in May 2011, and "Quickie" followed with a No. 3 peak in October 2011. Meanwhile, Wale's No. 1 single "Lotus Flower Bomb" featured Miguel on the hook and reached 552,000 downloads. Sales for "All I Want Is You" now stand at 404,000 copies, according to SoundScan.
Still, Miguel feels that the artist who made "All I Want Is You" wasn't the real him. "That album was a huge learning experience," he says. "I left the marketing of my album and me as an artist up to the discretion of the label. They marketed me like the typical R&B artist, which I can't really blame them for, because that's what they know. But that's not what my lifestyle was."
Miguel Delivers Dazzling Set, Plays New Songs at Private NYC Show
When Jive, along with Arista and J Records, was shuttered and absorbed by RCA Records last fall, Pitts was named president of urban music at RCA. Miguel remained part of *ByStorm Entertainment, and the jump from Jive to RCA gave the R&B singer a new label team (with a key supporter in a powerful position) to appreciate the development of his persona.
Last February, Miguel released "Art Dealer Chic Vol. 1," the first in a three-part mixtape series that introduced a more ambitious sonic approach. Vol. 1 included a two-minute, 18-second song titled "Adorn" that was a quick burst of new-school soul never meant to grace the radio. But when Pitts played the mixtape for the first time while driving down the West Side Highway earlier this year, "Adorn" made him want to dance in his car. "No matter what record he sent me next, I knew this was the first single," Pitts says.
With radio stations already asking for the mixtape cut, Miguel agreed to return to the studio and add a bridge to the track, and soon "Adorn" became a three-minute, 14-second official single. RCA senior VP of marketing Lisa Cambridge says the song started off at rhythmic radio and eventually became a focus for top 40. In its seventh week on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, "Adorn" is No. 23.
Last July, "Adorn" was featured on "Kaleidoscope Dream: The Water Preview," a digital EP that contained the first three songs on his forthcoming album. "The Air Preview" followed in September with three more songs, including the album's Salaam Remi-produced title track. The EPs were Miguel's idea for reaching new fans, and while Cambridge recognizes the risk of releasing six of the album's 11 tracks before the full-length hits stores, she stresses that the label wanted to herald the vision of its talent and the quality of "Kaleidoscope Dream" instead of focusing solely on first-week sales.
"The stakes are high for everybody, but we knew that the music was there," Cambridge says. Additionally, the "Water" and "Air" EPs will be pulled from digital retailers once the album is released, and fans can use iTunes' Complete My Album tool to scoop up the remaining tracks. "The idea of rolling it out this way is a great mix of a promotional opportunity and an early revenue stream."
Miguel kicks off a short U.S. promotional tour on Sept. 26 in Washington, D.C., and Williams says that the singer will stay on the road in North America and Europe during the next six months. A partnership with Grey Goose for the brand's "Rising Icons" video series will continue for a second year, with more branding opportunities being mulled over. Meanwhile, "Kaleidoscope Dream" will receive a more extensive big-box rollout than Miguel's debut, highlighted by Target-exclusive tracks and endcap placement at the retailer.
And while "Adorn" may prove to be Miguel's biggest hit yet, it's only the beginning of the makeover that R&B fans are going to hear. Woozy follow-up single "Do You" will soon bring the hook "Do you like drugs? Well, me too, me too" to R&B/hip-hop formats.
"I want to change urban radio," Miguel says. "I want to change the sound of what's expected from R&B songs on the radio, and I really intend on doing that -- especially with this next single."

Brandy Talks About Frank Ocean Collaboration “Scared of Beautiful”

“Dude, you’re special.”
Those are the words Brandy had for Frank Ocean years ago before anyone knew about him. In a new interview with Rap-Up, Brandy tells them how the song “Scared of Beautiful” came about and that she always new Frank Ocean would be a star.
It turns out that Frank had written and recorded “Scared of Beautiful” and then later Brandy recorded her version for her new album “Two Eleven” due out Oct. 16.
Will we have another “Miss You” on our hands? I know I sure would like to here Frank’s version of the song.

How did the record with Frank Ocean, “Scared of Beautiful,” come together?
Well, he had the song for a while and when I heard it, it really just spoke to me. Sometimes you get to a point in your life where you’re scared to be great, you’re scared to be beautiful, you’re scared to be the best version of you and you talk to yourself and you try to get yourself back on track. I just remember feeling like that at a point in my life. I know there are so many people out there that go through that dark time and I felt like it could speak to a lot of people. He’s such a brilliant writer. He’s a poet and I love that about Frank Ocean. For him to write such a beautiful song and me get a chance to sing on it was a plus for me, such a blessing. So glad the world knows about him.

Did you always know he was going to be a star?
Absolutely. I knew and I always tease him. I tell him all the time that I knew before he knew. I’m telling you that you should sing. I’m telling you that you’re gonna be one of the biggest artists in the world. Like I’m telling him this and he’s looking at me like I’m crazy. I’m like, “Dude, you’re special.” Please know that you’re special. And he’s so meticulous and he needs everything to be on point and that’s when I knew that if he was gonna be an artist, he was gonna do it his own way. He trusted his gut, he trusted his instinct, and I’m just really proud that we are blessed by his talent.

The 'Price Tag' singer is rumored to be joining the likes of James Corden and Julie Walters in the new film.

Jessie J has reportedly signed up to make her acting debut in a new film based on Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

The 'Domino' singer will take to the big screen alongside other British talents such as James Corden and Harry Potter star Julie Walters for the movie, One Chance.

Jessie performed in several productions when she was younger and is a graduate from the BRIT school of performing arts – such as the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse and Rizzle Kicks.

The movie will start filming in Swansea and Port Talbot in South Wales next month and tells the tale of Paul who went from phone shop worker to winner of the talent show when he turned to music due to bullying.

Rihanna closes out day one of the 2012 iHeartRadio Music Festival at Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. In normal RiRi fashion, she performed in a super short slinky sequins tank by Jeremy Scott, boots, baseball cap turned to the side, and a deep violet lip.

Anyone else crushing on RiRi’s new short hair do? Because I surely am. Love, love, loves!

The 24 year old superstar sang a few of her early hits as well as my iPod favorites which are always on repeat - “We Found Love,” “Birthday Cake,” and “Where Have You Been.” It’s obvious that Rihanna is just as addicted to Instagram as I am. Immediately after the show she tweets and grams a few pics as evidence she had a blast.

Rihanna has confirmed that her next single will be titled 'Diamonds'.

In an interview with iHeartRadio at their annual music festival, the 'We Found Love' singer revealed that the song will get its first play on US radio on Wednesday (September 26) at 8am ET.

Rihanna described the track as neither happy nor sad, and said it was "happy and hippy" rather than "dancey".

"It's laid-back but it's hopeful," she added. "It's a record that... gives me such a great feeling when I listen to it. The lyrics are very hopeful and positive, but it's about love and... a little different to what people would expect, I think.

"I'm excited about that," she continued. "I'm excited to surprise them sonically."

When asked about her continued success, Rihanna said that she just "loves great music".

"When I make an album, that's what I think about; what I want to hear, what I love to hear," she explained.

"I think that's what my fans love... I always want to make it interesting for them. I always want to make it a little fresh and a little ahead of what's on the radio.

"That's the challenge for me," she said, "but I enjoy that."

The singer's as yet untitled seventh studio album is due to be released before the end of the year. She recently announced that she would be embarking on a 'Diamonds' world tour in support of the record, which begins in Buffalo, New York on March 8

Porn star Sasha Grey pens erotic novel 'The Juliette Society'

$

It seems like the hot trend in the world of fiction right now is erotic novels, mostly thanks to "Fifty Shades of Grey" lighting women's worlds on fire. Deadline reported on Sept. 20 that porn star Sasha Grey has added her name to the list of authors writing these steamy novels.

Grey's debut novel is titled "The Juliette Society" and has reached a publication deal with Beth de Guzman at Grand Central Publishing for the U.S. rights and Catherine Burke of Little, Brown for the U.K.

“For the very first time I can create my own world, my own characters, my own story, and express my own vision with publishers who are just as passionate about the subject matter as I am,” Grey said in a statement. “I’m not interested in trying to reinvent the erotic novel, but I look forward to taking it back to its source as a salacious treatment of sex, particularly female sexuality, as something mysterious and sensual. Me sensual? Go figure!”

Grey has an advantage over many of the women who write these romances because she has personal firsthand experience in the porn industry. She remains one of the porn industry's most recognizable names even though she stopped working in the business four years ago.

Most of the mainstream world knows her as Vinnie Chase's porn star girlfriend during "Entourage" as well as a star in the Steven Soderbergh movie, "The Girlfriend Experience."

The book is described as "Fight Club" set in a "highly sexualized world with an assertive female protagonist."

One Direction star Harry Styles appears to have a preference for older women when it comes to dating, as the teenage heart throb has been linked to another high profile woman that is more than twice his age.

The 18-year-old boy band member was reportedly recently spotted with Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia, 37, at a mutual friend's wedding. The pair allegedly stayed at the same hotel and the following morning, were seen at a scheduled breakfast together.

"Everyone was talking about how Harry was really smitten with Natalie. They got on like a house on fire and were clearly very into each other. The next morning Harry was given a grilling by the other guests. He was overheard telling one that he thinks Natalie is an amazing woman," a source reportedly told the Daily Mirror U.K.

Prior to Imbruglia, Styles had a relationship with 32-year-old DJ Lucy Horobin for just a few weeks when he while he was still 17. The pair reportedly met on Manchester U.K. radio station Key 103 and the fling reportedly almost ended Horobin's marriage.

"Harry's got a record for pulling some of the most beautiful women in showbiz and couldn't resist Lucy's beautiful looks. He found her really witty," a source said.

"Lucy was going through a rocky patch with her husband. After only a year of marriage she had doubts over whether she had done the right thing. She had requested taking time out in their relationship and they were virtually leading separate lives," the insider added.

Styles eventually began dating TV host Caroline Flack, 32, despite a 15-year-age gap, which ultimately ended his short fling with Horobin.

"Harry just happened to be in the right place at the right time. He charmed his way into her life and brought a little bit of excitement with him. Lucy was confused about her feelings for her husband. They were still living in the same house but not actually living as a couple," the confidante explained.

Uploader Enika Attawan says: "Here's an audio recording of Zayn Malik on the phone with two underage fans. These are fans he met at a signing, exchanged numbers with, and then called later that night to ask them to come to his hotel so he and Harry could have sex with them. I'm only publishing this because it's a) illegal for these men to take advantage of naive, vulnerable, and underage girls and b) disgusting that so many people look up to these womanizing bastards.

The girls in the recording will remain anonymous because they are underage."

Video transcript:

Zayn: Hello?
Girls: Hello?
Zayn: Yeah, just a quick... You know when you come in the hotel, yeah?
Girls: Yeah.
Zayn: Uhm, just walk straight in, stop, don't get involved with the people outside 'cause there are fans outside. You don't want to look like a fan. You walk straight in...
Girls: We don't want to get you in trouble...
Zayn: No, listen... Walk straight in.
Girls: Is there going to be like, security outside? Are they gonna let us in?
Zayn: No! Just listen to what I'm sayin'! Listen to what I'm sayin'.
Girls: Okay, go.
Zayn: There's fans outside, yeah.
Girls: Ok.
Zayn: 'Cause you don't want to look like a fan, yeah, so you'll just walk straight in and get in the lift (elevator). If they ask you who you are, say your name's Cristobel Riley (sic?).
Girls: Cristobel Riley?
Zayn: Yeah, that's your name.
Girls: Okay.
Zayn: Okay?
Girls: Okay. So where do I go and say my name's Cristobel Riley?
Zayn: No, you don't go anywhere. If they ask you who you are, then you say that...
Girls: Oh!
Zayn: Don't go anywhere, just get straight in the lift (elevator) and come up. Listen, how far away are you?
Girls: Twenty minutes.
Zayn: How?
Girls: I'm going fast, I don't know what you want me to do. Just wait.
Zayn: How far away are you?
Girls: Twenty minutes.
Zayn: Twenty minutes?
Girls: It's raining and I can't see.
Zayn: Oh, well Harry's saying you have to be quicker than that.
Girls: Alright... Tell Harry that we're coming.
Zayn: Ah, fifteen? Fifteen minutes is good.
Girls: Tell Harry he needs to wait.
Zayn: Harry, uh, if he wants booty, he has to wait.
Girls: Tell him to calm down, he'll get it
Zayn: Alright, just be as quick as you can, yeah.

Barfi! sparks debate about the portrayal of the differently abled in films

$
0
0

Anurag Basu's latest film Barfi!, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles, is being touted as one that can change Bollywood's perception about the abilities of the disabled. Mainstream Bollywood cinema has always found it tough to seamlessly integrate the differently abled into its plotline.

The physically and mentally challenged have been portrayed as characters that deserve to be either pitied or mocked, but hardly ever simply accepted. Films that were largely successful in integrating this section of the population with the 'normal' one were immediately tagged as arthouse cinema. But with filmmakers and actors looking to challenge themselves, the arclights have now begun to shine on the differently abled.

Barfi! tells the story of the bond between a deaf and mute hero (Ranbir) and an autistic heroine (Priyanka). When he decided to make the film, Basu was sure that he didn't want to sentimentalise the hero. "If you spend time with differently abled people, you will get over the notion that they're unhappy, suffering souls. Please don't pity them. They find happiness in the smallest of things. They celebrate life constantly. It takes normal people much longer to be happy. For me, it was a given from the start: they (the characters) had to be happy."

Barfi! is only the latest in a growing list of Bollywood films that are trying to look at characters with physical disabilities from a different perspective. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, Black and Khamoshi, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan's My Name Is Khan, Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par (TZP), Anupam Kher's Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Mani Ratnam's Guru are just a few of the more recent ones that took the stand that the disabled are actually differently abled.

Bringing positivity

Rani Mukherji, who played a deaf, blind and mute character in Black, said the film was an entirely new experience for her. "Doing Black made me realise that we, the supposedly normal and successful people, are insecure everyday, whereas the physically or mentally challenged go through a different, far greater turmoil and are much stronger as human beings."

Bhansali recalls, "Years ago I decided to make my first film about a couple who are hearing and speech impaired. Everyone told me that making such a film was committing career suicide. 'Who would want to see a film about two people who can't talk or hear?' But I did not care. My heart reached out to these people and I made Khamoshi." The film, like Black, had a positive outlook. "At the end of Michelle's (Rani's character) struggle audiences get up and clap for her. It's my greatest achievement."

He recalled that when he made Guzaarish with a paraplegic protagonist, people asked him why he was concentrating on those on the fringes of society. "Because I want such special people to enter our mainstream of society through mainstream cinema. My hero may not be able to walk but his spirit soars. He has a story to tell, jokes to crack, a life to live. Hrithik in Guzaarish understands the value of life better than you or me."

While physical disabilities can still be translated onto the screen with a bit of effort, the task gets even tougher when an actor has to portray a mental disorder. Anupam Kher played a man suffering from Alzheimer's Disease in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara. "Any other kind of ailment is easy to show. But how do you show Alzheimer's? There's no external prop. An actor has no choice but to BE that person... Such roles and characters are becoming progressively acceptable."

Negative aspects

Vidya Balan's portrayal of a character with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in Guru had invited a lot of flak. MS is an autoimmune disorder that can confine a person to a wheelchair, but it is not life threatening the way it was described in the film. My Name Is Khan (MNIK) was another such film. Many experts claimed immediately after the film's release that Shah Rukh's interpretation of a person with Asperger's Syndrome was quite far-fetched. Anita Vesuvala, secretary, Mumbai Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, explained why it is important that films give the correct information about any disorder.

"A film makes people aware that a particular disorder exists. If a disease is portrayed properly in a film, then it is definitely helpful. However, if it is shown wrongly, then it gives rise to even more misconceptions," she said. "I wouldn't say that filmmakers should stay away from portraying any disorder when they haven't done proper research on it, though. It also depends on how wrong the portrayal ends up being -- whether it is totally wrong or a just a little wrong. But when a filmmaker wants to portray a disorder, why take half-measures? They should do their research."

Kate Currawalla of the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association (MDA) said that it is important to see how a filmmaker wants to use a particular disability. "Is the film trying to portray the disability or just using it as a hook for the rest of the story?

Unfortunately, many times filmmakers choose certain elements they want to use for dramatic purposes. That becomes exploitative." Masarrat Khan, CEO, MDA agrees. "Generally, movies and comedy shows use someone's disability or disorder as comic relief -- people with a squint, a stammer or a limp are made fun of. Children imitate them and it is tough for us to explain to them that it is not funny for those going through it."

Dr Rubina Lal, president, Sopan (Society of Parents of Children with Autism Disorders) explained where MNIK got it wrong. "Shah Rukh Khan is shown as managing everything. Those with the syndrome do have average or even above average intelligence but you can't deny they have problems. There are many things they can't do their entire life," she said. Masarrat prefers to look at the positive side. "MNIK did not portray the disorder accurately, but atleast it was a serious portrayal and the film did not mock those suffering from it," she said.

On Barfi!

Dr Lal added that even Basu hadn't got several things right in Barfi! but despite that, it is a good effort. "I am happy that the film has brought autism into the public consciousness by a lead actress, and there are a few scenes where the events are genuine - like when Jhilmil wants to go to the loo - but it is not real autism. Priyanka has acted well, but she is shown thinking and acting in ways that are not possible for an autistic person.

For instance, Barfi (Ranbir) drops Jhilmil (Priyanka) at the home of an old servant she is very attached to and goes away. She leaves that servant and goes running after him. An autistic person doesn't leave anyone they are really attached to. And if they are newly attached to someone, they can't express that feeling of attachment. They may throw tantrums but they will not go running after them, calling their name. Another instance is when Jhilmil goes missing. She calls home and tells her family her whereabouts, which is impossible. I agree the movie is about disabled people enjoying life instead of living in a dark world, but they could have taken one minute out of the three hours or so to give a bit of facts."

Dr Lal added that Barfi! was not a realistic portrayal of even the hearing impaired. "I know hearing impaired people who have an issue with Ranbir's character. He is a naughty, loveable character but he doesn't use sign language. The one time he does, it is incorrect. Rani Mukherji had done a better job (in Black), Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan in Koshish or even Manisha Koirala had signed very well in Khamoshi. Here, someone or the other reads out everything to him which is not how it happens."

Alicia Keys on not releasing ‘Put It In A Love Song’ music video with Beyonce

Have you been spending countless sleepless nights wondering – what on earth happened to the music video for Alicia Keys and Beyonce’s “Put It In A Love Song”?

The divas teamed up with Melina, flew to Brazil and filmed a very Carnival-inspired clip back in 2010 – except it never saw daylight and no explanations were ever given – that is until today.

Keys who is set to perform alongside Beyonce at her upcoming Black Ball event, sat down with Essence Magazine, where she finally explained what happened to the clip:

“Ohhh man! Y’all aren’t going to leave me alone about that! Sometimes with creative things [it] all comes together and it’s (makes perfection kissing noise) and sometimes things almost come together and it’s better to just leave it. So we love that song.

We had a ball shooting the video. It just so happens that the whole thing, for some reason or another, didn’t quite come together so we just decided to leave it. And that’s what happened.”

Are you happy with the answer or are you now wondering – what does she mean it did not come together?
